News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

This sounds great, FD are making the right decision to use a lot of the next season to add some more layers to existing gameplay. There have been some big extensions to the game in the last 18 months, and they all need some refinement to take the game to the next level. I personally am happy to sacrifice a season of major extensions for a season of putting together some great gameplay.

I'm excited too but I would hope changes to the core systems won't be locked behind a paywall. That would be pretty messed up.

The last part is by far the best message in months. Focusing on improvements of existing content is exactly what Elite needs and finally gets some attention. I think I and many others can not be statisfied more by this announcement. Now let's hope it will cause some actions to be taken.

We’re happy to be able to confirm that the next major updates following 2.4 will focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements! We’re delighted to be investing a considerable amount of development and effort into making the core gameplay experience even better for our fantastic community or players.

Praise the Old Gods and the New. [up]

Fix the foundations before adding extensions to the house.

That's correct.

Glad to see people positive about the news though!

I like this idea don't get me wrong but I'm worried that we're getting a mechanic upon a mechanic that's a total grind and a thing to use.
Same time it's about time that we're getting a narrative in the game story missions are not an option but an obligation !

Don't be too certain on that one. Obligatory story is not really an Elite thing...and I can think of a few people that would be pretty unhappy about that.

Me? Eh, couldn't care less for either way. I play the game...if game wants me to do certain things, I do them....I play the game.

thanks a lot Zac and FD for finally sharing some info on the future of ED!! This is mostly welcome and needed since the (overall) mood in the forum
was really bad the last weeks.

Zac, so basically we get a point upgrade in summer, 2.4 from september to .. what.. optimistically december, and what's beyond in q1 2018?
I can live with the fact that the horizon season stretched to two years instead of one, obviously some things didn't work out as expected.
Curious to hear about the further roadmap in the end of the year! :)

Major updates on core gameplay???!! I really hope this means you are, in a sense, going back to the drawing board to figure out what you want the player experience to be like.

Right now the core experience lacks something. I really want my pilot to have a story worth telling. I want each system I visit to have a story worth telling too, and to be a part of that story. I want the events of that story to have a real effect on the gameplay opportunities in that system. I hope that there is a big focus on NPCs and Missions, and the systems that let us interact with them to make this possible.

Missions should be stories, or parts of stories that we can dig deeper into if we want to. I don't care if procedurally generated stories feel a bit awkward, they could add so much.

This sounds like the right way forward. At least beyond 2.4, please consider bringing back the dev updates. Keeping the cards close for 2.4 sounds reasonable to me given the likely alien story advancement, but the core improvement stuff would be nice to have more above board.

Appreciate the comms tho. Good stuff

So it's 2.4 elite dangerous remastered

So if post 2.4 is going to essentially be core mechanic improvements, bug fixes and QoL then my assumption is that this will be free and supported through cosmetic purchases in the store? How is that going to work with Lifetime Pass holders?

Also, Zac mentions that 2.4 is a 'little' update - is he being sarcastic? I paid for five full expansions, obviously 2.4 is going to bring Thargoids but I hope there is at least a decent amount of content especially after the dearth of content in 2.3.

It's all great, but didn't explain too much. I've always hated the idea of waiting for the next 'big press event' for anything to be announced. The same with a slow piece by piece reveal. Cool that 2.3.1 is happening on my birthday though and any information is good information at this point. Look forward to more information soon.

I find myself excited about this news. And I am not going to let it be ruined by reading previous pages where the cabal of usual suspects is moaning and whining away. It is occurring right? Right?

Perhaps my imagination is running away with me but it all looks, and sounds, pretty damn good.
Course I'm a fanboi anyway.

So 2.4 Thargoids tear us into tiny little pieces and drive us from human space as they attempt to terminate every human in the galaxy.

Well may be.

Really exited to hear this! Thanks for the update it looks as though you are listening and taking action on the right stuff. Thanks so much for taking on feedback and filtering it in such a constructive way. Best of luck and here's looking forward to many more years of play!
