News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

The first thing I’d like to share with you is that we will be adding another point update on June 27, this will be for all platforms and will include a number of bug fixes, and stability and networking improvements. This includes the much-requested Anaconda cockpit appearance change and will also introduce greater security for multicrew hosts to be able to disable or limit crew members’ specific activity.

One large element of this point update is a number of “under the hood” fixes which are designed to improve stability and performance, particularly on planet surfaces. This means that we will be looking to run a beta for 2.3.10. However, we do understand that with this being a point update with a number of less visible improvements, it won’t have as many new features to play test. Nonetheless, this testing is very important to make sure the game works as we would expect. Due to the wider and more global nature of this small point update, we will be making the beta open for all and we would welcome your support in joining and spending a few hours playing and helping to ensure the update is as good and stable as it can be.

We’ll have more details on the beta, and exactly how it will work shortly.

Maybe you need some PS4 testers yes...?

We’re happy to be able to confirm that the next major updates following 2.4 will focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements! We’re delighted to be investing a considerable amount of development and effort into making the core gameplay experience even better for our fantastic community or players.

At last ! The Cobra IV will get some love :p

So if post 2.4 is going to essentially be core mechanic improvements, bug fixes and QoL then my assumption is that this will be free and supported through cosmetic purchases in the store? How is that going to work with Lifetime Pass holders?

Also, Zac mentions that 2.4 is a 'little' update - is he being sarcastic? I paid for five full expansions, obviously 2.4 is going to bring Thargoids but I hope there is at least a decent amount of content especially after the dearth of content in 2.3.

Many ppl seem to read this line wrong. Major patch after the 2.4 will contain core improvement.

Hey Sandro!

I know you can read this.

So please, pretty please, please with cherry on top - do not put your stupid booster nerf idea into this beta. You know what will happen - we anti-nerf people will sink it.

I had some testing plans for both 2.2.03 and 2.3, and both times I was unable to execute said plans due to your failed nerfs. Can I finally get to work in peace, without your "challenges"? Thank you.

...:D

Thank you for the news Sandro. If the core gameplay is going to be fleshed out as much as you imply, I wouldn't be too let down if planetary landings never happened.

The are fixing the Condas cockpit??? I hope they are not going to do anything with those wires, I've been using them as a washing line, I'll have nowhere to dry my undies!!!

Isn't that rather dangerous? Those are electrical lines if I'm reading pg. 1,309 of the Faulcon deLacy Anaconda User Manual correctly. There's a blood stain on mine from a kerfuffle with a pirate last week. I'm still cleaning the floor and my Crewmember is constantly reminding me about it every few seconds. They could at least add some sort of protective covering to them so that when I take a rather nasty hit, I'm not seeing GalNet constantly intrude on my Bounty Hunting.

Also... Deck three? There's a wash room on the port side crew quarters.

Nice to read something is coming, but as ever the proof of the pudding is in the eating, thus going to wait and see if it's worth the bite.

Excellent game. Love the way the game plays at the moment. Making exploration even more profitable would help my game, in case you're wondering. Good luck with the work and wish you continued success.

You had me at core gameplay.
My main worry with ED has always been that you guys would over-extend with an ever increasing amount of new features you couldn't fully do justice to due to limited resources.
I'm very glad to hear slowing things down and looking back is still an option.

I suppose we wont know more about your new revenue model until (after?) E3?

Greetings Commanders,

It’s a very exciting time to be part of the Elite Dangerous galaxy. On June 27 we will welcome even more Commanders to the galaxy with the PlayStation 4 launch. These new players will join the ranks of our already incredibly active, passionate and dedicated community.

Since the launch of Elite Dangerous: The Commanders a number of weeks ago, we’ve received messages from members of the community eagerly awaiting details about the 2.4 update and the future of the game. I’m pleased to be able to share with you a little more detail on what’s to come in the short term and slightly longer term with Elite Dangerous.

2.3.10

2.4 – “????”

Back at EGX in 2015 we showcased the headline features that would be coming to Horizons. However, there’s always been an extra little update, a mystery if you will, that has yet to be revealed.

We’ll be providing a little more information about the update to the community and the press during E3 on June 13th and 14th. We’ll be hosting special community livestreams and activity so stay tuned for more news and updates as we get closer to the date.

I can, however, tell you that this update will be slightly different to previous ones - content will be revealed over time rather than all being available on day one. Additional pieces of exciting content will surface over the coming months as the narrative progresses.

Beyond

So with the Horizon season of expansions coming to a close, what is beyond 2.4 I hear you ask? Well, it certainly isn’t the end of this amazing journey… we’re only just getting started!

Our awesome dev team are dedicated to continuing to build and improve the Elite Dangerous experience with an exciting long term vision in mind. We’re delighted to be investing a considerable amount of development and effort into making the core gameplay experience even better for our fantastic community or players.

We’ll be sharing more news on that content and our roadmap at a very special event coming later in the year - more details on this event will be released in the weeks after E3.

On behalf of the entire Elite Dangerous team, thank you for your continued support. We are very excited to embark on the next part of the journey together as we continue to make Elite Dangerous an even more fantastic game and experience for our incredible community of players.

Thanks for the update - much appreciated.

One thing I would love to see from E3 are some sneak peeks. We know the team will have been working on elements of 'space legs', landing on planets with atmospheres, earth-likes, new SRVs and so on for some time by now, even if only still at quite early stages of development - it's inconceivable in my mind that behind the scenes the Devs haven't at least been experimenting with how to implement such things. I think it would be great to get just a few sneak peeks at how things like simple atmospheres, gas giant atmospheres and earthlikes are coming along. Not concepts but actual peeks at how the development is progressing beyond concept to eventual implementation in-game. Insights into what problems are being encountered or expected and how these may be resolved. Not only would this be a great lead in to the later event as an indicator of what's even beyond the core gameplay improvements, but a lot of us are interested in the development process for such content. Plus if such additions are still some way off due to this next phase of core gameplay improvement, it will help increase confidence within the playerbase in regard to the longer roadmap.

Sounds like lots to look forward too.
Very exciting................I want it all now.

Keep up the great work FD.

This is great news to see, but definitely have to reign in the expectations. They could fix 2 things...for example, making the font more legible in VR, and now that stations orientations are depicted properly in supercruise, they could do the same for nav beacons, and bam..list fulfilled. :)

Seriously though, fantastic seeing this post and that "...it certainly isn’t the end of this amazing journey… we’re only just getting started!" Yippee!
