News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

We’re happy to be able to confirm that the next major updates following 2.4 will focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements! We’re delighted to be investing a considerable amount of development and effort into making the core gameplay experience even better for our fantastic community or players.

Best news of all!

Personally I think the adding of CQC bases in the main game is a prelude to making CQC a real part of the galaxy.

Multi-crew CQC anyone?

IMO, this is the best part of the message:

Thanks Frontier for listening to the player base and committing to keep improving your wonderful game.

Great news on the QOL improvements getting looked at, looking forward to see what comes in the next few months, and beyond.

I bought Horizons when it came out and have definitely had my moneys worth many times over and have no complaints there. I was wondering though, what will happen when 2.4 is finished? Will I have to pay some more for a (new, next) season, game? I don't mind at all if I have to, don't expect it for free, but just wondering what happens after the Horizons content finishes.

Could anyone clarify this for me please?

Cheers,

Mick. :)

Try not to complain overmuch, but since I have once or twice.... It is only fair to chime in on the other side as well. Thanks for the update guys, silence can sometimes be so nerve wracking when you are finally in a game you like again. I appreciate that you're busy actually working on the game, but hearing you talk about it is nice too.

You can thank all of the "So-Called" whiners, complainers, salt miners for this end result. There is no reason to apologize for raising issues or complaining about broken features etc.

As I have always said... Popular video games like Elite Dangerous advance and improve through the persistence of the game's most vocal yet passionate critics. There has never been ground breaking improvements made based on the non-action of so-called White Knights, Apologists what ever you want to call a group of players who never seem to see a problem with anything in the game. The only issues they have are with the players who do, and are not afraid to make their displeasure known here.

Lets hope that after today, those folks will have learned a valuable lesson about what the community can accomplish when it is united in a cause for quality instead of the status quo. :)

As much as I love hearing that the core gameplay will be getting love I really hope this doesn't mean that the alien story content isn't shoved to the back burner. I mean it's been such a slow burn already I don't think it's unreasonable to not wan to wait until next year for some sort of payoff. We need interaction! Not just stock encounters!

Aaaaaaand I'm interested in the game again.

Greetings Commanders,

It’s a very exciting time to be part of the Elite Dangerous galaxy. On June 27 we will welcome even more Commanders to the galaxy with the PlayStation 4 launch. These new players will join the ranks of our already incredibly active, passionate and dedicated community.

Since the launch of Elite Dangerous: The Commanders a number of weeks ago, we’ve received messages from members of the community eagerly awaiting details about the 2.4 update and the future of the game. I’m pleased to be able to share with you a little more detail on what’s to come in the short term and slightly longer term with Elite Dangerous.

2.3.10

The first thing I’d like to share with you is that we will be adding another point update on June 27, this will be for all platforms and will include a number of bug fixes, and stability and networking improvements. This includes the much-requested Anaconda cockpit appearance change and will also introduce greater security for multicrew hosts to be able to disable or limit crew members’ specific activity.

One large element of this point update is a number of “under the hood” fixes which are designed to improve stability and performance, particularly on planet surfaces. This means that we will be looking to run a beta for 2.3.10. However, we do understand that with this being a point update with a number of less visible improvements, it won’t have as many new features to play test. Nonetheless, this testing is very important to make sure the game works as we would expect. Due to the wider and more global nature of this small point update, we will be making the beta open for all and we would welcome your support in joining and spending a few hours playing and helping to ensure the update is as good and stable as it can be.

We’ll have more details on the beta, and exactly how it will work shortly.

2.4 – “????”

Back at EGX in 2015 we showcased the headline features that would be coming to Horizons. However, there’s always been an extra little update, a mystery if you will, that has yet to be revealed.

We’ll be providing a little more information about the update to the community and the press during E3 on June 13th and 14th. We’ll be hosting special community livestreams and activity so stay tuned for more news and updates as we get closer to the date.

I can, however, tell you that this update will be slightly different to previous ones - content will be revealed over time rather than all being available on day one. Additional pieces of exciting content will surface over the coming months as the narrative progresses.

Beyond

So with the Horizon season of expansions coming to a close, what is beyond 2.4 I hear you ask? Well, it certainly isn’t the end of this amazing journey… we’re only just getting started!

We’ll be sharing more news on that content and our roadmap at a very special event coming later in the year - more details on this event will be released in the weeks after E3.

On behalf of the entire Elite Dangerous team, thank you for your continued support. We are very excited to embark on the next part of the journey together as we continue to make Elite Dangerous an even more fantastic game and experience for our incredible community of players.

Hiya Zac, I won't lie-I really love what I am reading.....sounds like 2017 will be a great year for E: D. That said, in terms of "improving core gameplay features", is there any chance that you could start that ball rolling in 2.4? There are a few elements in the game that are begging to be better tied together (like Factions & Powers, Factions & Engineers, Intel & Missions), it would be nice to see that process started in 2.4. I know I keep banging on about it, but I feel that an expansion of the Favour system would be a great "first step" in that process :).

Also, with so much going on over the next 12 months or so, could we *please* get back the weekly Dev Updates from Michael, you & Sandro. Those were the highlight of my week during 2015!

Thanks in advance!! :)

In retrospect, after digesting the OP, I just feel like saying thank you FD and that it sounds like you're on the right track!

Interesting point made here. "Additional pieces of exciting content will surface" Content and surface used in one line ?? is this an easter egg clue to 2.4 possibly

Even though this amounts to announcing an announcement, I announce that this announcement announcement has announced just about exactly what needed to be announce announced. I can't wait for the announcement that this announcement announces.

Seriously, it's better than silence and concentration on core gameplay is what is sorely needed. Maybe preannouncing the season content and deadlines has fenced the devs in too much, leaving them less able to shift their focus around to where it has been needed. I suppose we will have to wait for the announcement before we know, as long as the announced announcement isn't another announcement about an upcoming announcement.

Season 2 has always been a self contained package of updates starting with Horizons 2.0 and going up to and including 2.4. Although Frontier has stated recently that they are abandoning the "season" model after the current season is completed, whatever is next in line has always been considered a separate package that everyone will need to purchase at release of 3.0.

So.. .You are good to go for the next point update. After that you can choose to stay there, or move on to the next update packages that will be considered a new product that must be purchased.

I can understand their approach. E3 is just around the corner, & they want to keep their powder dry til then, but they still wanted to put the community's mind at rest here & now. Its a tough balancing act, but I think Zac did it very well.
