News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

Thanks for the update and good to know that the devs are planning to focus more on improving core gameplay and existing features.

It would be nice to get an update, but if the developer doesn't have anything new to add because Apple aren't about to change anything then that's all they can tell you.

Apple have been developing Metal and games using that api are being released now. If FD mean that OpenGL is the only option, then I agree there's nothing more to be done, and they should say so in the FAQ.

It's odd that if the community isn't updated for a few months it's a tragedy, but if the macOS community isn't updated for 18 months, that's just a shrug of the shoulders.

I've taken this from another thread, because it sums up my thoughts exactly:

[...] Let's look at Frontier's actual record: for the past 2.5 years "core gameplay" has meant 1 thing and 1 thing ONLY: combat mechanics. And "QOL improvements" has been used by frontier to describe lobotomizing difficulty, pushing arcade mechanics, and looking at realism and immersion as roadblocks rather than as potential elements of good gameplay.

However, when it feels like I'm losing faith about the future of ED, I try to remember that, when I decided to buy PB with the LXP, it was a risk. If there's one positive I can take from this announcement, it's that FD are continuing to develop ED, perhaps not in the way I like, but at least FD are sticking with it. :)

David had said, at least 10 years of development

...the next major updates following 2.4 will focus on core gameplay, existing features, quality of life and other improvements! We’re delighted to be investing a considerable amount of development and effort into making the core gameplay experience even better for our fantastic community or players.
Fingers crossed!

More than anything else, thanks for the communication FD. It was the communication that was needed.

The rest is great as well :)

That's another thing I forget too.

I also remember telling myself at PB, "Enjoy the ride". Sometimes I need to take a step back, relax, and remind myself that ED has a lot of potential. :)

Goodness, iterating on core features is something so sorely needed. This is such good news, that they will take the time on a whole patch cycle to look into that rather than do it on the side with the implementation of new features. Really good decision, guys. Flashy new things bring people in, but awesome core gameplay make them stay.

Thanks I appreciate that. But still it took a really long time to just say there is more after 2.4 and pretty much not reveal anything still. There is no single glimpse in this post of anything that is coming in the future.
