Gtx 1080 ti Elite Dangerous

The oculus and Vive sdks has hard fps limit at 90, but reaching that is the vr nirvana.

But having some eye candy is beneficial as well, especially shadows are imo great for adding immersion.

So I choose shadows at ultra rather than a few notches more on the hmd quality.

Very interesting, I have the same kind of taste for graphic ajustment, can you tell what is your rig ? CPU, Motherboard & memory ? I just got an 1080TI but have an old 3770k and not so happy with the result compare to you and other people on this forum.

Late to this thread (and only a GTX 1080 user here) but even with my 1080 I'm setting HMD quality to 1.25 and easily getting 90fps practically everywhere, even without ASW, so I'd be surprised if the Ti with ASW can't go a lot higher.

For my settings I've got Bloom, Blur, DoF and Ambient Occlusion all turned off. I'd love to know exactly what Bloom, Blur and Ambient Occlusion are doing for you in VR (with it's inherently low-res) because my understanding is that these are fairly costly operations for little (if any) noticeable benefit.

I'm also not bothering with anti-aliasing (relying instead on an increased HMD quality to deal with my jaggies). Again, from my understanding (and a fair amount of testing), the in-game anti-aliasing is fairly innefective and a big performance hit.

Shadows is an interesting one. It's another very costly operation (visibly knocking great chunks off your fps as you crank it up). Some people live without it. Personally I love shadows (especially when landing at planetary bases) and have found that with anything lower than "High" they look terrible. So I've taken the hit and gone for High.

Aside from this I've got ALL other settings cranked up to the absolute max.

And as I say, I'm easily getting 90fps practically everywhere with ASW turned off on a GTX 1080.

Apologies if I'm speaking out of turn and going over old ground here, I'm just assuming than anything I can do you Ti guys should be able to do even better.

I've got an i5 4690k cpu, a ASUS® Z97-E motherboard, 16Gb ram and the Asus Strix ROG A8G 1080 card. I've overclocked the CPU a bit and I could overclock the 1080 but generally don't bother these days.

I had a 1080 paired with an i5 3570K, the game ran well and I enjoyed it a lot. Reprojection was always on, but I really enjoyed what I was experiencing. I upgraded the CPU to a i7 7700K and mind = blown.

I can run without reprojeciton on, as Mr Turner said, and it still maintains liquid smooth 85~90 FPS. [Excusing the occasional stutter due to an area loading]

If a CPU and, likely, a motherboard upgrade is an option - take it. While I don't like to encourage people to spend money on something they may ultimately still be underwhelmed with, it made all the difference for me to support my GPU with a better system to plug it into.

Well, I couldn't resist any longer after another price drop. Went for the MSI Gaming X Ti. Very nice card. Basically I changed nothing but went from 0.65 / 2.0 to 0.75 / 2.0 and have better visuals plus a little more headroom before ASW kicks in. Pretty much what I expected :)

Unfortunately I get BSOD's with IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL... like every 20 minutes or so when playing. I could reproduce that when stability testing with Prime and Unigine Heaven running simultaneoulsy. Hardware failure on one Core. I dialed my CPU and RAM OC back a notch, ram memtest86 and tested again. Seems stable now. Have to test in Game now.

Funny though that swapping the GPU produces an unstable system.

Rather try leaving SS at 1.0 and bumping HMD to 1.5-1.6.
Beyond that there's minimal or no difference at all since you've reached maximum possible display sharpness of the HMD.

ok guys here my issue I have a 1080ti it runs elite at max settings in station at 90 plus fps. but when I put the vive on and run in VR the card drops to about 50 % duty and hits 45fps. Any body come across this before

Not terribly suprising.

With all settings at max, maybe some SS thrown in?
Even these cards won't keep the reprojection from kicking in.
And the steamVR reprojection is even more aggressive than ASW is for the rift when it comes to throttling.

ED runs very nicely with the new 1080Ti (previously 1080). I basically went up from 1.25 to 1.5 and get 90FPS all around. But I see stutter now when dropping out of SC when approaching a Station. That lasts for about 3 to 5 seconds before everything is butter smooth again.

Maybee that is due to 2.3? I was out in the void when 2.3 dropped and I am sure that I did not see that stutter with the 1080 in 2.2

*not 1080ti related but...*

I was having the same problem, Google results said its a network driver error and to get latest network drivers from you motherboard manufacturer. I only did this last night but so far so good.

I have GTX1080 and that stutter(along with some other ones here and there) was always there for me.

Dialing it back to 4.7GHz did it for me. No more crashes so far.

Maybe you should try overclocking.

I have the same set up as you and I'm getting 90fps with everything at max/turned on (including bloom, DoF, Ambient Occlusion etc.) with HMD Quality at 1.25 and SS at 1. I've flown through various space stations, RES, rings, landed on planets etc and monitored fps with the Oculus Debug Tool OSD. There are dips, where ASW turns on, most notably driving around on the surface, but the game runs at 90fps 95-98% of the time in all of these situations.

Specs:
3770K @ 4.5 ghz
1080TI @ +152 Core / +447 Mem
16 GB RAM

Well I went back on my position not to upgrade and bought the MSI 1080TI gaming X (unexpected windfall and birthday). I wasn't expecting certain games, not native VR apps, like ED, to be a big jump but the extra increases in settings and smoothness are nice. Still tweaking for the sweet spot. The ability to max out settings and PD on native VR titles is awesome. So far the titles I can max or near max out are Robo Recall, IRacing, Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, Detached, Golf Club VR (nice to be able to enjoy these courses at full whack), and the one that I thought looked pretty good until now-Doom 3. I was gob-smacked at how sweet this looks at full crank. DCS World didn't see much improvement as far as the fps goes but I could increase some settings a little. Battle of Moscow I could run at high on my 980 and ultra still isn't smooth on the Ti so I chock that up to early implementation of VR by 1C/777.
So many things to try yet, but it would seem that any "native VR title" can run at PD 2.0 with all sliders maxed or dam near at 90fps without ASW.

Since this is an ED forum I will offer my opinion on this card for ED. It is not worth the extreme price to upgrade to this card from any other Frontier approved for VR gpu as far as performance increases you will get relative to the cost. That said for all the native and some not so native VR titles out there, this is the beast to own, if you can afford it. I will only play games in VR now so no regrets here. OMMV

If you don't see it, the F & J keys are centered with my chair, and there is no room to the right for the numpad.

I have the exact same throttle and joystick, and you've even got the (I forget the name - but possibly Cambridge Soundworks?) speakers I used to use with my Soundblaster Live!

Major nostalgia trip there bringing back memories of Alien v Predator, Half Life and System Shock 2 with awesome EAX and surround sound :)

Yes, exactly - Cambridge Soundworks. First speakers I ever bought from COMPUSA (almost 30 years ago). The sub's on the floor and they still sound and rumble awesomely. ;)

It's a shame I rarely get to use them anymore, but I'll trade that for VR any day. I never wanted to mess with 5.1, other than simulated in phones (which Sennheiser does nicely).

Just mentioning, Doom 3 BFG edition is on sale, I picked it up today for about $3.5.
Popped in the VR mod, and holy ****., Arizona sunshine doesn't reach this to the toes.

Did you install the All In One HD texture base as well?

$5 for Doom3 BFG -Insane. Anyone with Touch should grab this up and patch. Best FPS in VR at the moment, imo.
