News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

Core game improvements are OK... if they are free. I don't think many people will pay again for... ¿improved mining? ¿improved multicrew?

I want you to make money, Frontier... but I think updates like atmospheric landing or space legs will sell much better than updates with only core game improvements.

I laready paid for frontier to give me good core mechanics, from what i understand those mechanics right now are PLACEHOLDERS, if they want me pto pay to have "improved" piracy .. they gonna have a bad time.

I gather you won't be paying more for core improvements. My guess is more paid content will be for straight up new features.

I really don't want to be a party pooper but srsly? This is politician grade spin.

Ah, because the storyline content and content up to now appeared at breakneck speed as soon as the patch was released. So we can expect the 2.4 storyline and content rollout to be even slower than the current one... Yikes, that's practically geological timescales, in terms of modern gaming.

What? 1/3 of the way in and just getting started with future content rolling out slower than the current content... To say Elite is a slow starter is perhaps an understatement.

So... in a nutshell... 3.0 looks like next year....

If there are any news to extract from the "meta-announcement", then they seem to be what you said. I take the "meta-announcement" as a re-branding of what they have been doing so far. Instead of saying "new stuff is coming", now they are saying "we are improving old stuff", which, after some scrutiny, seems to mean the same thing; that "new stuff is added to old stuff". But in the end is semantics, is just that the first one sells better than the other, and that the other is what is being demanded right now. A political move that calms people down, but that doesn't change the problem at hand; that the new stuff has to be good and polished, otherwise, it doesn't count as an improvement.

This arent news, with this announcement virtually everything remains the same. The future is equally uncertain. And surprisingly enough, no word about already know promised features. If everyone knows Atmospheric Landings "is coming", then why is it such a secret?

I hope they'll make Elite a little more... you know... interesting. Because now (for me) it's soooo boring... To get some large ship or some profitable missions or ship upgrades from engineers you have to do A LOT of boring grinding, and in return you only get an ability to do more boring grinding...

That makes sense... but Zac didn't speak about new features. And that worries me.
His post was vague, not compromising... He only had to add "...and besides core game improvements, of course, exciting new features!!!". :(

Personally I think the profitability of exploration is fine - I think we simply need more to actually do, to discover, reasons to linger in a system instead of simply jump-honk-jump. I'm sure that will be a key focus within the planned period of core gameplay improvement though.

I agree, more and varied things to do and ways to go about doing them – preferably "realistic" within the context of the game universe and lore – would be much appreciated in exploration. Making credits is just something you do along the way to keep you busy working toward various long or short term goals and has more to do with basic game balancing.

How you specifically go about making credits while exploring could be improved though, in my opinion, making it more of a dynamic and involved system. Here's a thread with my and other's thoughts about this that I started some time ago, if anyone is interested. → https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...of-cartographic-data-be-market-scarcity-based

PS: I wouldn't complain too much if I could trade in my SRV hanger and landing gear for tank treads on my Vulture explorer ship... ;)

If I had to hazard a guess as to how Frontier will monetize the game from here on without "season passes", I'd wager they will be utilizing the Elite Store to charge for certain things other than just cosmetic DLC. They already have the Store in place and it integrates very well with the game, so why not take advantage of that? For example, all of these core and QoL improvements will probably be free updates for everyone to prevent fragmenting the playerbase. However you might start having to pay in the Store for things like:

- Volcanic Planet Landing Permit (new planet type to land on)
- Gas Giant Flight Permit (allows flying into GG atmospheres)
- SRV MkII License (new SRV)
- Panther Clipper License (new ship)
- Imperial Explorer License (new ship)

Ideally these would not be expensive to buy, say $5 or less for each, but over the course of a year or two you might end up paying the same total amount that you would have for a season pass like we did for Horizons. The big difference now being that you can pick and choose what features you want to buy and which ones you don't need at all.

That's my gut feeling for how they'll be handling this going forward. Totally theorizing here though.

You know, for those folks that still ain't happy with the news, or perhaps jaded by the past - which I shan't debate as right or wrong - you are not being held hostage here. Most game forums you see a hell of a quit or complaint post and these folks really leave and play something else they enjoy. Not here though. Most odd how some people just can't leave and have to stay here and rage.
I have a couple of theories on this but neither one is very complementary.

Same guess here! If so, then I hope the pricing would be fair, since I considered the cosmetics originally too expensive. Anyway, I don't think they will be selling ships individually, it would render ingame credits redundant, and it could escalate into a P2W scheme. And even though I wouldn't mind if they sell them, I can see why some people might question it. Is a delicate point, since FD, if I remember correctly, have stated they will not follow the P2W route.

One person's boring is another person's interesting (and vice-versa). My wife thinks ED is boring, but she also thinks knitting is fun... Hopefully they won't add mandatory knitting to ED so my wife can find it interesting. It's probably best that she just accepts that ED is not a game made for her.

Yeah, funny how those who have hated the game the longest are now wanting to take credit for today's news!

"So-called." I know others have called me a whiner on these forums before, and probably a white knight or care bear for that matter too. :D

I'm not trying to take credit for any of these announcements or such, but I do think actual constructive criticism has its place.

On the other hand, there seem to be some people that want a totally different game than what this one is and was said to be. They should probably move along and look elsewhere for their gaming fix and instant gratification. :p (Or play CQC?)

Season 2 has always been a self contained package of updates starting with Horizons 2.0 and going up to and including 2.4. Although Frontier has stated recently that they are abandoning the "season" model after the current season is completed, whatever is next in line has always been considered a separate package that everyone will need to purchase at release of 3.0.

So.. .You are good to go for the next point update. After that you can choose to stay there, or move on to the next update packages that will be considered a new product that must be purchased.

Emphasis mine. Except those of us with the Lifetime Expansion Pass, of course. :)

Good news!

Zac, I have a suggestions about "core gameplay":

1) War between factions doesn't make sense when players in SOLO and PRIVATE can influence everyone.
2) CQC needs a system for creating private sessions (we can organizing championships using this) - and if possible add more ships
3) Wing missions ("Boss hunting", same as traditional MMOs. Facing waves of enemies with a stronger "boss" at the end). And that these missions drop rare materials.

Oh, wow. Sorry man, but that third suggestion just sounds so gamey and wretched to me – at least the way you worded it – that I had to mention it. Less "farming," and more playing at being a spaceship Commander in the Pilots Federation in 330X, please.

It only worries me that FD are sticking with secrecy as their own ways of "listening to their player base". So without actually opening talks they just get all the salty stuff and will most likely bring out all that Alien Story Encounters regardless of any interaction. Just for the hype of the first few who get involved with it to shout out what they discovered. This style of play is like breast feeding a baby. The rest of us are too grown up for this and prefer not to look knowing it is just a short lived storyline!

No, you wouldn't pay for the ship itself, just for the access to it. Like how Horizons pre-order players got access to the Cobra MkIV but we still had to buy it in game.

QoL .so more dumbing down then.. oookay

Ha! Let's hope not... :p

Some QoL improvements have been great, like the enhancements to the galactic map, though I admit that it has made navigating through tough patches of space more trivial.
