[suggestion] Ultra Lightweight Armor

As an explorer, I'm always looking to shed some weight from my ships.

I'd like to see Grade D (ultra lightweight) armor for my hull. It should weigh significantly less than the standard hull plating and cost about the same as Military Composite. It should be about as sturdy as lightweight armor. It could be made of carbon fiber or titanium foam or aluminum aerogel or some other exotic substance.

This armor should not be available for all ships, in particular the Anaconda is so light it must already be using something like this for most of the ship's structure. I'd like to see Ultra Lightweight Armor available for any "Explorer" class ship and maybe the "Type-N" trading ships.

0T in relation to other armors is my guess. This would be cool, but just mod w/ G5 lightweight and you are off to the races. But, if implemented, I would do high price, not all ships, reduced hull hardness and integrity, reduced mass, and if G-tolerance ever becomes a thing, reduce that as well. Pretty much replacing your armor w/ tinfoil to improve range. (Not that extreme but...)

Lightweight armor already weighs 0T....or are you talking about adding a module that has negative mass?

No armor really weighs 0T. Imagine stripping the hull plating and replacing it with ultra lightweight carbon fiber. The net result is that your ship weighs less, say 20T less for a medium ship.

Exactly! That's the idea, but something a bit sturdier than tinfoil. I'm not particularly fond of engineers, so I'd like something I can just buy.

Out of curiosity, which engineer offers G5 lightweight armor? I haven't seen that.

The hull plating weighing "0T" might suggest it's integral to the ship (thus included in the base weight) and the other types are simply overlaid on top of it. In that case, it would probably make more sense for any lighter armour to be an engineer modification of the Lightweight Armour.

I think the current lightweight armour engineer mod only gives a mass reduction on reinforced alloys and above, but I may be wrong...

I think Explorers would whine about this when heading home and having risk of a NPC attacking them with all that data. Being a really easy target. I look at the Armor class right now Light as regular ship hulls as the lightest hull.

One thing I was thinking was Different grades of Fuel. You have to have a Third tank. (Note First two already being use on the ship) A idea talk about on the DDF forums Fuel in Elite Dangerous

My idea basically add a extra tank. You fill it with high Grade of fuel and save it. When you need it you can combine it with nebula or Minerals to gain a longer jump range. But your limited on how much fuel you have.

I'd be willing to risk my exploration data for a longer jump range. I already do, by using the bare minimum shields. The extra risk adds excitement to the game.

The high-grade fuel option sounds interesting, but only in the bubble. I want something which will help for hundreds/thousands of jumps. This would be acceptable if you could refill it at a star and do some sort of crafting on it, maybe even just like FSD crafting, but doing it on a fuel tank would let you use it for multiple jumps.

I found the only engineer who does upgrades on armor. First you have to rank up with Tod (to get an invite from the other engineer) and then you have to do a bunch of mining. In order to do that, you must do a bunch of combat and then a bunch of mining. I do not like either of those activities very much. This is exactly why I dislike the Engineers.

Selene Jean does. I think I spelled her name right...
