Planetary Landings- are they worth it?

Hey folks, remember I am a PS4 user so do not have and have not played elite yet, just looking for some input/feedback about planetary landings. Apart from the fact they look absloutley amazing, give a different space landing situation and provide a decent backdrop when in the atv, is there any point to them?

I mean can you make credits from the landings? are there planet missions/objectives? can you harvest them?

I am not dissing them, I cant wait to land on them, just want to know can there be a purpose to them rather than "asthetic"?

I know its planets without an atmosphere, does this mean literally "any" regardless of surface type?

Thanks for any answers. I cannot wait for this game and becoming part of the community

There are missions and stations/outposts to land at and you can collect materials for engineers or visit points of interest. Some alien ruins also exist on planetary surfaces.

If you are not sure about Horizons you can always just buy the base game first and see how you go. I bought the base game on PC but have pre-ordered the full game on PS4.

I noticed in a couple of systems they had planetary stations only which meant on PC I could not interact with the system at all.

For me the ability to approach and put my ship down on a full sized planet adds an extra dimension to the Elite universe.
Some unique bases can be encountered and alien stuff too.
And yes you can make money on planets. The planetary stations offer services and missions like any other station.
They add docking opportunities to systems. Some systems might not have a large space station, but have a large planetary station on a moon for example.

For me there is definitely a point to planetary landings.

I hope we will get more stuff to do in the future. I would love to do some real planetary mining for example.

I think Horizons does add to the depth of the game, in my opinion it has been well worth getting (shame they tainted it with the beigeification pass)

Yes, there are planet missions and some can be real fun, think of it as another string to your mission bow.

At the mo, you can only land on airless rocks and moons, but some of those can be really quite stunning. I aim for the sub 450km rocks and ice balls, ideally orbiting something big, like a gas giant of some kind, they appear to have some of the best surface details.

There's nothing quite like flying through a canyon in a DBS at max throttle, climbing up out of the canyon and landing up on a high ridge, deploying the SRV and then trying to do a canyon jump, Evel Knievel stylie, on a low grav moon (and if you catch the right lighting, maybe just on the day/night terminator, it's just something else)

Now all it needs is the beige issue fixed and and some atmo planets and i'll be tickety boo!

:)

.

Yes I completely agree, and I personally cannot wait for that. I just hoped it was not just that and there was more depth to them. but as the other cmdr stated it sounds like there is. I mean alien ruins?-yep. unique stations/trading points-yep. collecting minerals-yep, that's more than just landing for a pretty vista.

ARRRRRRGGHHHH hurry up end of june already lol

Simple answer "Yes" - Scan missions, recovery missions, destroy settlement facility missions. Some of these if you become allied with the faction giving the mission will pay out in the millions.

TBH I don't do planetary missions much. But landing on planets is useful / has a point.

Firstly sometimes the closest place to refuel / rearm / repair is a planetary station; and they always have Large pads, which is good in Colonia (only has 3 stations, the rest are outposts).
Afore mentioned special events, like the <REDACTED> alien or Formadine Rift stuff.
And don't forget ED is a sandbox. Not everything is like say an Assassin's Creed game, with obvious markers and missions. Planets allow SRV racing, canyon racing, mountain climbing, and silly things like launching your SRV into space. Make you own fun type stuff.

So YMMV, much like some (including myself) ignored engineering, but use other elements from Horizons: for example Ship Launched Fighters are pretty good fun.

If you want to Engineer your gear and synthesis items for combat or exploration then the answer is yes. Plus there's a lot of fun trying to get into a base with a security rating and getting out unscanned. If you get scanned then the joint lights up and the base tries its best to kill you.
