Community Event / Creation Candy Crew Guild presents the Candyball Rally of Plutarch!

Well unfortunately it seems my system has wiped the keybinds for my control pad, and too annoyed to sort it out now (Secretly hoping it fixes itself). this means no more racing for me. will try and get my highlights and mishaps video out soon.

Have fun all and good racing.

Nice going, congrat's! I haven't had a chance all weekend. I'm certainly capable of a sub-25 (I might even keep trying after the race has finished just to prove it to myself) but well done for getting there first. The drinks are on me!

o7

thanks, were a few points in that run that just clicked and did really well....and then others where I turned my srv into one of those inflatable hamster balls.

Also, the race will finish in darkness. I might have made a slight error in rotation, by a day. if you crank the gamma it is nearly like daylight though.

As he said. I also did my fastest time so far this morning, gamma slider all to the right and darkness is no more. :)

Latest leader board with 15 min left in the rally. All laps currently in progress will count but you will be done when the checkered flag is waived at midnight. If you want to get one final run in you have 15 min to start it now. This is final call to the grid.

I assume this is now officially over, so let me be the first to give a heartfelt thanks to Raijiin and the rest of Candy Crew for a fun and well-run event!

I don't know about you but for me the planet being in the dark right now makes it especially difficult. I usually can't see where I'm gonna land until I'm directly on top of the spot.

Oh I dunno, seems to be the same for me, day or night. I just can't get under my original 38 min mark :( Bounces and such aside, I keep spinning out on most of my "landings" (ie face the wrong way). Sometimes I land upside down and in those cases time is lost trying to right myself up.

And repairs :D

I can relate to that, it's how I felt at the end of my last session. And it's utterly bewildering when other people are going 4 times as fast. Anyway, like I said above, I think I might try and prove to myself that I can do a sub-25 over the next day or two and then walk away from it (I probably shoulda done that after sub-30 but my little wager with Nitrogue kept me pushin' and I can't leave it now :p)

Yeah I've seen their sub-10 min runs, I'm doing everything they're doing, EXCEPT:

1. Landing facing Lopez and taking off again (I land in any direction except facing Lopez)
2. Even when they're not facing Lopez they can somehow boost towards that general direction.
3. They don't explode.

.... so I don't get why I can't do a decent time like maybe a 20 min run?!

Cool... I'm not last :D

Great run, everybody! Thanks Raijin for holding this event! Been fun, albeit frustrating for me :D

Had a fun time with my first srv racing event, definitely would like to do another at some point. Though maybe more racetrack than rally :D.

(I probably shoulda done that after sub-30 but my little wager with Nitrogue kept me pushin' and I can't leave it now :p)

Having this little competition between us helped, as well as my own goals:

Sub 25 mins

Sub 20 mins (got close but not quite)

Top 10 finish :D and the leader of +20 (and +15) minute group

Beat a candycrew member And some buckyball racers as well. Though I do understand this wasn't everyones sort of race. You wouldn't expect Colin McRae to race Lewis Hamilton in F1, and definitely would expect Ben Ainsley to join in as well.

Have Fun Oh Yes!!!!!

Going to make up a fun times and bloopers video and put it up here in the next few days, hope you enjoy it.

Again thanks very muchly, will see you round the stars.

p.s. keybinds are back now, I think someone hacked in to stop me going sub 20 :p

A lot of what you're saying happened to me. I was struggling to beat my first time for most of the week, and then for parts of one run just fell into place. Spins and hamsterballing cost me a lot of time and momentum. I think the momentum bit is important as you are losing time trying to accelerate again.

a trick I found with repairs is get nice and high, or if on ground do drive assist, and then quickly do it mid-air. it helps to have it selected before you start the run, but the synthesis menu resets after each use so takes a bit longer second time +

with the whole repeat what the best are doing, good plan. as was suggested to me, just keep practising. again momentum helps, and people seemed to think you span out less at higher speeds, at the cost of more damage. Having intermediate goals helped, so rather than going straight to sub 5 min time, tried to aim for 5 minute interval goals and focus on the next one rather than any others. keep trying to shave off a few minutes, or even 30 secs, each run rather than 20 or 30.

also, found if you want to do a good run, maybe go solo. I know it might be better with a buddy, but had some people getting lag/instancing issues with more people as well as taking more damage the more people on (on the penultimate day with about 8 others at kings holding, destroyed a srv in 2 bounces at the start, so not very fast/hard)

*checks his position on the leaderboard*
*oh, looks who's there just above you...*

Nothing unusual here, you're just the last victim of Cookiehole's renowned "cookiebots™"...so this means they are spreading outside of the boundaries of Buckyball races...everyone watch out! :D

I'd just like add my voice to those saying "thanks!" for hosting this event. It was indeed a lot of fun, and I learned a lot. Fliving was totally new to me two days ago, and now I feel like I at least have a handle on the concept (while admitting that I still have a lot more to learn and a lot more practicing to do). I'll try to keep an eye out for more events in the future. For what it's worth, I heard about this in one of Obsidian Ant's videos, so it seems that's a pretty good way to get the word out to non-racing players like myself. But of course, now that I know about you all, I'll try to keep up with things from time to time!

Oh hey, a quick question... on my last run (an explosive DNF), I was doing much better in terms of speed and stability (until I hit a rock at >150 m/s). The difference? I kept the wheels spinning the entire time I was in the air. Now it may totally be a case of luck coinciding with my decision to keep the hammer down the entire time, but it sure seemed like the wheels were providing a bit of a gyroscopic stabilizing force (albeit a weak one). I went back and watched Sushi's video, and it seemed like the wheels were spinning most of the time there, too. Is there anything to that, or was I just getting delusional?

Oh, and to those who suggested boosting the gamma to simulate daytime, good call! Worked as advertised! :D

veg, out. o7

There's no gyroscopic effect, but keeping the wheels spinning by pegging throttle to full with drive assist off is pretty critical to keeping that momentum up. It definitely affects whether or not you lose speed on bounces, and I think might also affect handling during touchdowns.

Hello everyone! :D

I am late to register and post here, but my times were over 40 mins so it doesn't really matter ;)

I would just like to thank the organizers for setting this up, it was fun to meet quite a few players who came to do the run over the week, and also some who were game for some completely random shenanigans ;)

Fly safe, or something :) o7

I also joined from OA's video, had checked out buckyball racing but they didn't have a race for a few weeks. the video sent me here and rest is history.

Here is my 09:08 run, should anyone be interested:

Thank you Raijiin for setting this up, it has been a lot of fun and another great occasion to improve my set of skills...I did a lot of fliving since SushiCW showed me how it's done during last year's Jailbreak event, but never even remotely as fast as this last time. If you Candy Crew guys ever set up another time trial rally like this one, count me as a guest already. ;)

The leader board is now the official results. the top 5 places are the prize winners. 1st is Nookie Mr.Smith, 2nd is me, Raijiin, 3rd is Tannik Seldon (aka SushiCW), 4th is Brabston, and 5th is Aken B. It was a great race all, and especially to the top 5 who all managed a sub 10 minute run. places 2nd through 5th have the choice of a ship paint pack and 1st place has a choice of a ship paint pack and a ship kit. Nookie and I both decided on the choice of forfeiting our prizes and instead taking the money we would have spent on the prizes to Special Effect. We already have most if not all we want anyway, plus we kinda hosted the event, so yea. 3rd through 5th, if you would like to send me your emails associated with your account, we can gift you whichever paint pack is your choice. You earned it and we had lots of fun. :)

Thanks for posting that, I actually found it really interesting and helpful to watch. I tried again yesterday to beat 25mins, failed and got very depressed. I even started to believe quite strongly that there was something wrong with my controls, that maybe I just wasn't getting the same max throttle input as some of you, because I just couldn't get my top speed much above 45, even on a decent run of bounces and tilt boosts. But watching that I can see how the speed builds up incrementally and that I'm just lacking the consistency. The point where I'm just starting to build up to 45/50m/s is currently the point where I start to loose it and if I could just keep the rythmn going I'd get up to 80, 90, 100+. SRV racing is really interesting. Speed builds incrementally, almost exponentially, and the ability to keep your nerve and control where others (like myself) start to panic and lose it, really can make the difference between a 30min run and a 10min run. I'm off to get allied with Canonn for now, and then to finalise the Lavecon Buckyball course, but I shall return to Plutarch (in the daylight) and I SHALL break through that 25m barrier.

I salute you all ... a terrific event. Thanks to Raijiin and the Candy Crew for hosting!

P.S. and you know what - I came mid table, 3 times faster than some, a third the speed of others. I can live with that! :)

Found with fliving that it seems to be all about momentum, and that hitting something slows you down, but then you need more time to accelerate up, as well as taking longer as you wont have a higher top speed (unless It caps out at some point)

There's no speed cap for sure...can't remember if it was nookie or Raijiin, but ask them about that time an SRV reached escape velocity and funny stuff happened :p...

As far as we know, the speed cap is either 1300 or that's as fast as Nookie got. It was a right pain but we managed to intercept him after multiple attempts from supercruise. Nookie is the fastest anyone has been as far as we are aware in Elite without aid of an FSD.
