While I'm all for using strong punishments as strong deterrents, the issue with deterring swatting is that the chance of identifying a vaguely competent perpetrator approaches zero. Put appropriate sentences on the books, sure, but it's not going to stop it happening.
The only effective way to fight it is to stop it working, which means reducing the tendency to make entry teams the first response. If somebody falsely reports, say, a hostage situation and the police make an attempt to reach out to the hostage taker with a view to negotiating a surrender, they will quickly realise that the report was false and no lives will be put at risk. Not to mention that if it turns out to be real, immediately storming the building is the worst thing they could do anyway.

Let's see if I have this thread so far - some guy wrote an article about some other guy (or possibly himself) named Zarek Null, calling this Zarek Null guy 'Elite Dangerous most hated player', a lot of people wet themselves laughing that anyone would care about this Zarek Null guy, so the writer deleted the article due to how things were getting 'ugly'. Do I have that riight?

I was interested to see how Smiling Dog Crew (who know Mr Null, and have opinions concerning his abilities) would react to Mr Null's public proposal, so I took a look at the OP's linked thread as above:

Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, Mr Null appears to have deleted his longstanding reddit account soon after replies began to be received.
I saw that post was gone but had not noticed the deleted account. That seems like an overreaction to me. I always assumed that Zarek was just joking, but now I have to re-evaluate.

Wonderful decision on the journalist part, it's rare to see such integrity in journalism these days. Zarek Null is without a doubt a combat longer, therefore a cheater and as such no promotion of this individual should be done and be acceptable to promote this game. I could care less if he shoots defenseless sidewinders in Eravate.
