Your first flight in the Sidewinder? What to expect?

So you have installed the game and your sitting in your sidewinder ready to exit the station for the first time... The excitement is unreal, you exit into space like a new born deer venturing out into the woods.....

Then suddenly you see another sidewinder heading towards you. You think hey another commander, I will say hello.
Before you know it your getting shot at buy some kid who thinks he's in a F16 fighter jet, all guns blazing thinking he is the greatest... [woah]

This is how I picture my first few minutes of playing ED on PS4 :)

Moral of the story is there is going to be a lot of kids that have no idea what Elite Dangerous is about. And will treat this as a free for all fighter pilot arcade game.

At least your Sidey is free =]

I hope I get shot at early on. Don't want to get too complacent. I'm hoping that Goldwinder is a big target!

However as people will tell you, you start out in your own instance. It's not until you make your first jump that you're really in 'Open' (if indeed that's what you chose).

Actually the very first flight out of the toastrack (or off planet if you take the Horizons start) will be in solo, so no other Commanders present until you make your first Frameshift jump.

Aaaand ninja'd by reclusive monkey :)

Getting attacked by other newbies in a Sidey is actually a great way to learn, as you're risking nothing really. People often switch to solo until they get the hang of the game, but by the time they do, they're already flying something that has a rebuy cost - sometimes a high one. One Sidewinder's major advantage is no rebuy - my advice is to take full advantage of that, you'll learn a lot more that way.

I expect to see mayhem and carnage on release as everyone learns the ropes [haha] and as for those kids in their F16s bring em on and if you get bored of that you can always hang around by a station with report crimes on,go fishing for them and watch the stations guns grind them into a fine paste [haha]

I've been in Erevate, a noob system, where there are often many new CMDRs around. There is plenty of friendly chatter, and most are keen to wing up and do some combat at the local nav beacon.

It's worth looking at the system security level if you are worried about getting attacked. e.g. Erevate is a high security system. If you are interdicted a whole load of deadly system security will jump in. Good luck to any hotshot in a sidewinder surviving against that.

Welcome to Elite  Dangerous!
A couple of notes: There is a manual, but no instructions. Nobody is going to hold your hand except maybe here, in the forums. In the beginning, in the Start-winder: you are the rabbit! Rabbits do not fight unless cornered. Rabbits RUN!
RUN FORREST, RUN!
Early on, it is more important to be able to absorb punishment and run away (Iron-butt!) than it is to be able to fight, since you will mostly not win any fights in a Start-winder aka Suicide-winder. Early on, almost everyone and probably everyone you will run into has a better ship than yours, more experience and more skill as a pilot than you, even that 10-year old who blew you up so easily.

I have heard the learning-curve of Elite Dangerous is so steep the mountain-goats have safety lines. Not true, you just need to go and find the good information but there is a curve for instance: Did you know that the cargo-racks in your starter Sidewinder are HALF-size? It's something nobody tells you. If the first thing you do in Elite Dangerous is switch these out for full-size cargo racks your profits from cargo instantly double from the first moment you begin playing the game. Some CMDRs fly for days or weeks before discovering this. Also, the first thing you need to upgrade on your Start-winder is the Frame Shift Drive (FSD) so you will have the "legs" needed to move around the local stellar neighborhood. After that it is up to you. o7

excellent, two steps up on the F16 10 yr old noobs. :)

One thing I would add is that, if you start in LHS 3447, there's no toast-rack to fly out of on your first flight as you start in Trevithick Dock, which is an outpost rather than a Coriolis (multi-faceted cube) or Orbis (ringed) station, so you'll not have to worry about hitting the station wall / toast rack until you get to one of the other stations :)

Your first flights in the Sidewinder should be the training missions - practice docking and supercruise apporach until you've got it down to doing it without thinking.

Then for your first REAL flight, see above

I can tell you of my first flight (in the main game).

It was around the time when the slingshot glitch was still a thing.

It happened to me - & sent me into an uncontrollable spin, I blew up & died!

The second flight was cool though, I made it to the next station, then realised I'd forgotten how to land, I was there ages trying to figure out how to get landing permission....

Then finding my landing pad...

Then spent ages trying to land before I figured out "I'm facing the wrong way"...

Then I forgot I hadn't put my landing gear down, pressed "B" on the controller (I was supposed to hold it & press down, I tapped it instead).

This boosted me into the back of the station & I died again.

Third flight was the charm however & I mostly had takeoff & landing down to a T.

My first trip will be into a RES where I'll shoot these 10 year olds to kingdom come, earning some nice credits. ;) Nobody messes with this old Elite commander from the 80's era. :D

Ever noticed how every once in a while you come across someone you shouldn't mess with?

Would that be you :)

Going on solo play, fly between the rings of a planet, mine, collect bounties and forget about the world when I'm there

Solo is not 100% safe you still have NPC pirates and NPC security to contend with! I have lost a ships in solo due to pilot error and a security ship flying in front of me taking a hit from my lasers shooting at a wanted ship. Shooting a security ship even by accident makes you wanted also.
