DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

Wow, EDTracker2 works great! All of my drifting just fades away.

That custom device method is really slick. Good job! I wonder if we can get rid of the mouse and keyboard parts of the HID.cpp and USBAPI.h files to save space in the firmware.

Thank you. I've been pushing the custom device since input it together (I built the versions for both IDE 1.0.x and 1.5.6 but I'm only credited for the first one)

As we have a separate copy of the core files we could indeed strip out anything we don't need, and not just from the USB files ;-)

cheers fred ... if you ever get to denmark let me know and ill give you a real beer :p

just got my EDTracker kit today, got it up and running now :D very impressed with it ingame :) awesome job with this thing!

SO for someone who has some rough idea that a DIY project to build a head tracker to avoid having to open the left and right UI panels, or to use the mouse to look around is going great guns. But hang on, I am reading about people not just building their own, but buying stuff. Now that sounds very interesting, I've no competence in building anything electronic. (Ok I did build this computer, but will help, most of the time past experience has taught me that I ought never to go near electricity :D).

So as someone coming in late to the party, how much does a head tracker cost, and who can I buy one from? Pretty please.

Thanks gents

Ab

Damn! I thought I past the worst with the soldering but I stuck at the compiling process, so I prolly missed something before that.

First off: I'd exclude some damage due to my terribad soldering capabilities since I came to the point of having the device recognized as Arduino Leonardo from my OS (Win7 x64). I followed the EDTracker2 flashing guide/pdf and the only thing I did different was importing the i2c libraries (those by Jeff Rowberg) into the arduino libs folder, which didn't override anything so I can't figure out how that could be the problem. The beta now is the 1.5.7, not sure if that could be an issue but the 1.5.6-r2 aren't there anymore. In any case when I try to compile the EDTrackerIICalibrate.ino I get this out:

compilation terminated.

It looks like he doesn't find *stuff*

The device should be on Com3, drivers installed and it's shown in the win device manager (as a keyboard/mouse?) but if I try to run the UI java thingy I see the yellow led blinking on my device but the command window cycles and stucks saying "no response from device on com3" and I have to kill the process to close it.

Well guess it's all..... I was nearly there..... derp :)

Hey guys been watching this for some time now & watched brumster youtube videos :D

A few questions ;)

I use a Wireless Head set ( Logitech 930 ) if i get ED Tracker will i still need a USb cable ? ( i'm trying to stay well away of cables )

Do i need a camera like the PS3 Eye ? What about the mounting on my monitor ?

I'm rubbish at Electronic DIY  Can i have it assembled & i will gladly pay extra for it ?

Sry but 131 pages is too much for me to trawl thru ;)

Or does anyone have a few links for me to get my answers ?

;):cool::D

The EDtracker is attached to your headset (or mounted on a hat), and you'll need a USB cable. One of the peeps here has been working on a Bluetooth version though, but I'm not sure how that's coming along.

No camera required, it uses gyroscopes.

The link above takes you to the EDtracker website. Purchasing an assembled one is an option there if you don't want to assemble it yourself..

Super Rog :D I've sent them an email

Does anyone know a neat way of attaching this to a wireless head set so that's not messy looking ?

Just get a velcro strap. Wrap some insulation tape around it first, but the tape only leaves about .5cm on each side. Here's mine. I did use a couple of o-rings on the outside edge too. It's so small you don't need anything fancy. I could cut my strap in half and have it a bit smaller still.

It's also worth epoxy gluing a blob around the usb socket to make it almost impossible to rip off the board by mistake.

I have mounted one (the wifes) in a small Maplin box and taped the box onto the headset. It's the same G930. Mine is still naked and unboxed but also taped onto the headset for now. I put a bit of protection on the padding so the tape doesnt harm it. Thin lightweight USB leads were the hardest to source. I found these A bit expensive but nice quality. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H07I7PG

I like the idea of a velcro strap though.

i use the same cable but the 3m variant. Works well, a huge improvement over my previous 6mm cable :)

I got the 3m version myself but didnt list that one as it's a bit long for my liking. Cable every where. The USB connector is very nice as you can turn it either way. Very useful when fumbling at the back of the computer.

Maybe consider the Update Tool approach; no need for any IDE. The latest 1.5.7 release is a bit borked due to some avr-gcc changes, it would seem. We'll get round to updating the PDF and the code at some point I'm sure, but in the meantime it's just easier to use the update tool if you have java working...

Awesome! The console method (as usual) worked. So I flashed the calibration skecth, did what had to be done, quit, flashed the main EDTracker2 sketch, re-launched the UI but it stucks again searching on COM3.

In both the flashing processes it started trying on COM3 but then turned to COM4 which apparently is the good one, but for some reason calibrating it, flashing main skecth and relaunching the UI made it forget the right one is COM4 :s

Btw in the windows device manager it's shown on COM3 but during the flashing process it swithes to 4 just to come back to 3 afterwards

My COM port seems to go up each time. I am up to COM8 now and getting a bit worried I might run out of them

I was fighting with the update tool for a couple of hours last night.
My EDTracker is assigned to com5 but whatever I do I can't seem to get the update tool to recognise it. Used the -c switch.
Tried another USB port that assigned com6 etc...
I will play around again tonight (hopefully as long as the wife doesn't have other tasks for me to do like washing up! :) ) and post some screen dumps.
I'm currently using Win8.1

K it seems to be working now. I tried reflashing both the sketches before, now I restarted win, re-flashed everything once more and.... voilà..... working like a champ. Now I'm running the compensation tool/command/whatever (button 3 on the GUI) but except the red dot went a bit off the little circle everything's smooth so far.

In any case once I'm ingame if I'm not happy with the calibration what should I do? Do I have to reflash the calib sketch, do the 9-button-thingy, reflash the main one and all the rest again?
