The screenshot reminds me of the Shadow vessel being freed from the surface of Mars in B5.
Nope.
We have absolutly no clues about the exact nature of this interaction.
All we can do right now is collecting more informations and analysing it deeply to be able to conclude about the nature of the interaction.

Analyse what?
1. Alien ship shows up.
2. Alien ship disable player ship.
3. Alien ship light a beam at green puddle.
4. Alien ship leave the instance.
5. Player ship goes back to normal.
There you go, I just saved you 2 days of speculation and blablabla on discord.
Give me a ring when I can shoot the thing or do something with it like put confetis on it or do a in-depth mission.

I can see ya point as it stands if war broke out we all would be dead as we couldn't fight back.
This is a simple solution to catch one of those elusive Alien Flowers:
1. Put a CMDR in a SRV near the Barnacle
2. Wait for the Alien Flower to appear
3. Once the Flower begins to feed on the Barnacle, call the GNOSIS and put it over the CMDR, The Barnacle and the Flower
4. Since the Flower will turn off the GNOSIS power, it will also shut down the engines
5. Let gravity do the rest of the job

If the devs eventually decide to make a good game with deep gameplay and a story about those aliens. I will be the first one to praise them.
I don't have time or the brain capacity to reverse engineer the sound files of the game to find a lizard picture that points me to a planet only to find a puddle.
Until then, I'll be watching their pointless 15 sec cutscenes on youtube and save myself 50 jumps.

Heres the thing though...the game itself really aint that much fun lately...so the forum becomes more fun than the game itself. Thats why threads like this are just too hard to resist because its just more of the same recycled cutscene nonsense, and without explanation or possible interaction is just easy to mock. The cutscene itself is ok but really? There gets a point where novelty wears off and it gets old...bit like the forum after a few bans and infractions ^
So what happens if another CMDR shows up in the middle of this scripted event? Do they also get their engines and systems disabled once they are in range, or only the ones that kicked it off? Would be an interesting case of sitting duck for the involved
that's a good point does the cmdr have to be on the ground for it to appear or could you be swooping in get disabled and smash into a mountain or something?
Not to mention that the ones "watching" the event becoming target practice for late arrivals if they don't get disabled.

Personally I'm still having a blast.
Try giving No Man's Sky a spin for a month...it's a refreshing change to Elite, even if it's still not exactly a full deck of cards.
I've not looked at many of the videos, but did all the encounters happen when a CMDR was out and about in an SRV?
Has anyone tryed to park there SRV ontop of the barnacle to see what happens when they show up?
Seems like these commanders were in their ships.
Also the guy crashing said he lost power.
