I can´t actually believe, that they might have learned and taken a step towards the gaming industry... good news though.
Sadly about 1.5 years to late for me, as i now own a decent gaming PC besides my iMac. And to get an iMac Pro for 5k isnt a financial option at all...
What i really hope for a lot more, is that Metal will finally support the needed shader architecture, to allow Frontier to bring Horizons to the Mac.

You and me both! I've had a gaming PC alongside my Mac for almost a year now, precisely because I'd lost hope that Apple would ever get around to this.

They're going to have to seriously up their gfx card offering then.

Meh - the 5xx equipped series looks a bit lacklustre compared to a PC you can swap a card out of - and you need to drop $5k on a machine for Vega (which again, you can't upgrade).

On the plus side - I almost bought a MacBook Pro last week, so happy that the the hardware refresh has dropped!!! :)

I think the onstage Star Wars demo was done with a new-model iMac 27" (which has the raw GPU muscle — probably helped quite a bit by Metal 2 as well — to handle modern VR). I’d be really surprised if any of the GPUs in the refreshed MacBook line were anywhere near close enough to manage the same feat, but I’m willing to be surprised. Maybe Metal 2 really does have some incredible secret sauce. The eGPU news was also really, really cool.

If I were a dev I wouldn't waste resources coding for apple and metal. The rx 580 8GB will be the most expensive option in the imac, mac pro's with a vega will be even more rare. And people with a VR headset will probably have windows installed already.

Died in the wool Mac user here (and iOS app developer):

I don't think this is aimed at consumers. This is more of a pitch towards developers who already have an existing Mac based workflow and don't want to move to Windows just for VR work.

An more interesting announcement yesterday was Metal 2.0. I don't know enough about this, but I'm wondering if it's possible this addresses some of the missing features that prevented Horizons content being developer for Mac ? It also might mean that ED for iOS isn't out of the question.
