If its a huge monitor or TV screen, i dont care if its 12k resolution. I care about pixel density.
Im sure Oculus will release a 4k model. But any larger than that its going to be redundant.
At the same time, i cant name any games that use all hi res textures without someone going into it and making a mod to do so. Elite is the same, you may be able to play it at 4k but the textures are essentially the same detail as 1080.
There is a optimal viewing distance with each size and resolution.
The sharpness is contant. So with higher resolution you go bigger.
What this means.
We went from 30 degree to 60. 90 120
8K is this if you move to the wall that you see only the wall and then a TV that size.
Thus FHD 42"
Sub optimal
UHD 84"
Suboptimal
uHd 8K. 168"
Suboptimal.
Most people watch there FHD from to far so acualy 720p is more fitting 42" on 4 meter so 8K get interresting around 200" and beyond.
Imagine this.
In 480 je see a talkin face.
In 570i you see uper torso talkin.
In 720 p a halfling and a other close to.
1080p you see two detailed actors in decent part of the room.
4K you see two actor not so close in the contex of there suroundings.
8 K you see a bunch actors incontext of more panoramic view of the pace they are while still see detaild facial expression.
The problem with this is view distance is set. By us its 4 meter. Higher resolution optimale sizes get huge and expensive.
If you want take full advantige of 8K you must reararange your view distance to under 2 meters and still you got a very big 8 K screen.
Optimal view distance FHD is 3 x its hight.
Optimal UHD is it wide.
Optimal 8K is 1/2 wide
As a very crude aproximation.
Of course the source cam need to be a more wider angle FOV recording.
For UHD 4 K no interrest in below 84" unless its for 48" PC monitor.
