Empire, Federation or Alliance

I'm an anarchist by nature, but if I had to choose I would support the alliance. ;) Never the Empire, because I'm opposed to monarchies and the slavery that sustains them.
Which faction has your support?

I'm still debating this one myself. I think I may want to get that dang cutter and if so I will need to rank up with the Empire. Still on the fence though.

Whichever one at the time has the rank locked ship I want to buy ;)

I'm Petty Officer fed rank on my Xbox account, so was going to go Empire, but I don't really like the Clipper or the Cutter so think I'll go Fed again, just to see how much I can rank up. Plus, the Corvette is fantastic. I'll probably grind Empire after that

Not really a matter of "supporting" one side over another, major-power rank is more about unlocking systems (permits) and ships (RANK). Major-Power rank is honorary, not official and you can be ranked highly in both major powers. The Alliance has no ranks. If you are talking about Power Play I cannot comment as I avoid anything that gives a large group of players a reason to shoot at me. o7

to be honest i will try and stay as independent as possible, due to the fact when ever i choose a faction in other games they end up really not as good as i was thinking. plus being a big fan of firefly and serenity, i couldn't let the browncoats down

I am under the assumption one can belong to or achieve rank in all three. If I am wrong, how does one switch, should one want?

You can't hold any rank in the Alliance because it has no organised Navy. You can hold any rank in either the Fed or Imp Navies at the same time with no penalties

One does not "switch" alliances in order to acheive RANK. One simply completes missions for local factions aligned with the major power the CMDR is trying to build rank in, for instance: If the CMDR wants to build Federation RANK, the CMDR goes to a base where there are FED-aligned, local factions (look for the FED sigil next to their faction name in the Mission Board) and runs missions for those FED-aligned, local factions (ignoring missions from other factions) to build REP with those FED-aligned, local factions and so to eventually increase his or her major-power RANK. If the CMDR wants to build Imperial RANK he or she does the same at a station with IMP-aligned, local factions. No joining, no "switching".

Not quite correct, you do have to actually complete a military mission for the Feds/Imps in order to actually get a new rank. Luckily these days they don't necessarily have to involve combat.
