My visit to Frontier Developments and the Future of the Game

As much as I was pleased and reassured by OA's and others comments in this thread, I can't help but totally agree with you 100%.

Those rumors on Reddit that the cheaters were only given a 30 day game ban and ALLOWED TO KEEP THEIR CHEAT SHIPS with all their exploited modules

Is that true? If that's the case then once again the community needs to pick up the ball that Frontier drop and deliver some justice. Most of these big pvp groups have home stations, I think it's time to invest in some corrosion resistant cargo racks.

At this point in time, these remain only rumors and hearsay. Although I have read from some on here, that several of the banned cheaters took to Reddit to BRAG about their "Slap on the Wrist" from Frontier, and were laughing at everyone because according to them, they will be allowed to keep their exploited modules.

That hit me like a 2x4 in the face, and I am really hoping that Frontier would never do something so utterly STUPID and disruptive to their game and its community of honest players.

I tend to avoid Reddit like the plague, so I have not bothered to research this myself.

Until Frontier responds officially with a public statement on this issue, (Something I hope they realize they MUST DO SOON) we can't get out our torches and pitchforks quite yet. ;)

P.S. I really don't want to bring down the mood of this very positive and exciting thread with such negative info and commentary, but I didn't create this debacle. Frontier didn't either, although holes in their code did allow for the exploit in the first place.

I just hope that in the end, they do the right thing, and they realize that the community needs to be told what the punishment actually was.

Everyone here who plays by the rules in ED expects a ZERO TOLERANCE response from FDEV on this and a significant level of punishment. A total removal of the cheated modules is the minimum we will accept.

And we will not let this issue die until we are given the details on what has been done to erase all signs of this in the game moving forward. Otherwise, none of the future plans for ED mean a thing.

I for one will uninstall the game and never play it again.

Hmm... wait... I can see it, they gonna make you be the voice of the Aliens, aren't they? After we got used to your voice being that of a nice friendly chap they are gonna lure is in with it to kill us :p

Well, we're all doomed then. We'll all be so bamboozled by the sound of Obsidian's voice, that they will be able to kill us before we can even fight back!!!

Why can I only think of two things when reading this ?

Well let's look at it this way, and I have a LEP (LXP). Through the lifetime of the game, FD is going to HAVE TO charge for new stuff because they are in a business intending to make a profit, or they may as well fold now. So just hold off negative speculation on that because there is much more coming, beyond fixing stuff, and we won't be paying for it. :)

In fact, I'm hoping they issue another lifetime pass, because it will give others the advantage of not worrying about whether to pay for new updates or not, and will bring more revenue into the game.

I don't think the lifetime pass holders make up a significant proportion of those that play the game. Only having 99% of players rather than 100% having to pay for additional content is a small price to pay for the extra funding gained during the all-important early development.

That's about the most negative comment I have seen you post (and you have plunged some deep depths), presumably triggered by the absence of negative values in the thread title. I congratulate you on your attempts to achieve further 'balancing' of the positive vibes ! Must have been a huge personal effort. Can't wait to see what you come up with next : it will be highly entertaining.

Panticus is the textbook definition of a vile troll. Its clear he hates the game & everything about it-yet he still spends hours of his time posting in these forums. I mean, seriously? How pathetic. Does this guy truly have nothing better to do with his life?!?!

Very likely, they'll get some guy with a Joe Pesci voice telling you your future that will last 10 seconds while you're sliced and diced into hundreds of tiny pieces and fed to space worms.

I think he's funny.

I disagree, but only slightly. Yes they had to grind to get materials, but while the rest of us have to try our luck for weeks scanning outposts and finding lucky signal sources, they just went to inara, found a planet with a good supply of iron, carbon or whatever and spent a couple of hours in the srv.

Yeah, it's not that they're not grinding, nor that they do it to avoid grinding - it's a matter of grinding in a way that far outstrips the effort needed to do so at level 5 standards. Getting all the mats needed for a level 5 takes FAR more effort than collecting iron, so you can easily fill your bay with iron, roll hundreds of times, and go back out in the same amount of time it would take anyone else to get maybe 3-6 rolls of the same type.

I totally understand where you are coming from. :)

You know, it's actually funny - in recent weeks, I've been called "fanboy", and "Frontier hater". I've been accused of ruining the game, and I've been accused of being biased and ignoring players concerns. Some people have told me that I make things unnecessarily difficult for Frontier, because I am too critical. Others have said that I only see the good side of Frontier and forget about the players. This is interesting, because as you point out - people see what they want to see. Some see the things they like, and are happy because they like them. Others see the things they don't like and pick up on that straight away. I'm not talking about Frontier or Elite here, I'm talking about my videos. Sometimes people see what isn't there. I can't be both a Fanboy and a Frontier Hater at the same time can I? Maybe these accusations come because I try to be as balanced as possible with my content, and a small section of viewers don't see this and instead only see what they expect to see.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion and I certainly don't think my opinions are the "right ones". What I do try however, is to make it clear when I am expressing my own opinions and when I am referring to other people's opinions.

There are a lot of things I do not like about Elite, and I have made a lot of forum posts and videos on those subjects. Powerplay and Engineers are just two of the things I dislike. RNG is probably the thing I dislike the most about Elite. I'm also not a fan of the way the game makes me waste so much damn time. I think the landable planets could do with a lot of improvement, and feel that in some respects they have been "ruined" compared to previous iterations. I'm not a fan of the shallow trading mechanics, or the way many of the games systems all work in isolation from each other rather than in cohesion. I could go on and on. But none of this is a secret, anyone who reads my forums posts or who watches my videos will know exactly how I feel. Frontier are no exception to that, they are very much aware of my thoughts and feelings on these things. But my feelings and opinions are just that. They are my own, and no more valid or meaningful than anyone else's.

I cannot say what Frontier are going to fix, and what they are not going to fix because I do not know. They didn't tell me. What they did tell me however is they do intend on fixing things. That they intend on fleshing out core mechanics and take the opportunity to bring them inline with their original vision as well as make further enhancements. What does that mean? Well I don't know. As I made clear at the end of my video, and at the end of my forum post my thoughts on that are "we will have to wait and see what this means for the gameplay". But also I will state again, that the general attitude and approach from Frontier left me with a very positive impression.

E3 is going to be highly anticipated by a lot of people, and rightly so - because people want to know what is coming next. But E3 will not have all the answers, it will not show us what is coming beyond 2.4, and it will probably only show us a part of what 2.4 is going to be.

For the rest, we are going to have to wait. And again, I have made my position on that very clear over the previous years - I have said again and again on these forums and on my videos that I feel Frontier need to get better at communicating. Yet for this I get the accusations that "Obsidian Ant puts too much pressure on Frontier" and "Obsidian Ant you are a fanboy, stop telling people they should wait and see". Again, as you pretty much said above, people see and hear what the want to see and hear.

Maybe that is why Frontier struggle with figuring out just what the "right amount" of communication is.

As for what I had to say - well it is entirely up to you how you feel about that. There's a lot I don't like about Elite (and I don't make a secret about that) - but as with most people here I am very passionate about the game, and there is a great deal I do love about it. That is what keeps me coming back, and I want Elite to be the best it can be.

Personally I feel Frontier have the right attitude towards the future of the game, I also know that Frontier are committed to future development. What that ultimately means for the game play though - I will yet again reiterate (as I did in the video and the original post), I really don't know. We will have to wait and see. :)

There just ain't pleasing some people, eh Obsidian? :)

You are, I feel, a lot like me.....you clearly love the game overall, & want it to succeed-but you're not so blinded by love that you can't see where fhe obvious flaws lie, both in current game mechanics or in Dev Communication. That makes you a target for both the haters & the white knights-both of whom I see as two sides of the same coin.

I just posted a video about this, but not everyone watches those - so I thought I would post here as well. Earlier this week I got invited to the Frontier offices along with a few others... <snip>

Hi there,

Was great to see you guys visit.

I hope I didn't bore you all too much when you came over to my beautiful corner of the office.

Hope to see you all again,
Dom

Just to put this in another perspective, we would need about 15,000 rolls just to have a 40% chance of getting even ONE of their ill-gotten god ships. You can bet the cheaters fingers went numb from all their cheating, but their carpal tunnel syndrome is small comfort when I look at the grind ahead to play catch-up.

Been hunting CIF on mission boards and outposts the last two days. I've gotten 14. At this rate it would take me 5 months just to get 1 godly dirty drive. And another 6 years to get 1 god ship.

But these guys get a 1 month ban and get to keep their stuff? Frontier, can I please be banned for 1 month and given 15000 engineer rolls at the end of it?

Yes, sign me up. I'll take a 30 day ban for a god ship :D

It's the QoL improvements I like the best !

Flimley

Same here. The game has some good, solid bones, but a lot of them are lacking in a decent amount of flesh, & there is a lack of connective tissue between them too. That is what I am hoping to see in 2.4 & beyond.

I'm not sure you've quite got what I'm getting at here, I'm not interested in what they went there to do that would undoubtedly be covered by NDA... (Well, I am, but not for the purpose of the question)

But more along the lines of, what's the connection between these guys and FD that they got invited in the first place? Are they just well known to FD (obviously some are like OA and TJ) from conventions or from YouTube, or are some of them professional VAs offering their services? Are they lucky prize winners? Things like that...
Frequent longtime posters to the forum who live around the corner. Good enough for you?
