Rock Rat Rescue

Struggling south slowly... finding a route through the abyss which uses the minimum amount of jump materials is tough going, but we think we've found a route that takes us a good 1000LY further south and out of the sparse stars. Think.

Prospecting is proving to be very difficult at the moment as the instancing bugs are driving us nuts. I shoot and the rocks appear 40m in the air for Nightstrider, and visa verse if he does. I've got ridiculous amounts of jump components (over 40 j1 jumps!) but we're struggling to find the mats for Nightstrider... we're getting there though and I've found systems with multiple landable worlds which could auger well for jumponium mats.

Wish us luck.

I prospected the entire evening on the planet you left me and got quite a few Polonium. up to 8 j3's ready.
If i get some more germanium ill have about 30 j1's and j2's

I've had a fair bit of practice at finding such routes when planning for trips to the outer edges. It's actually much easier now that I know about the hats. How did so many of us miss that for so long?!
Well, I've missed that one too, thanks! (but can't help you on the explanation :p).

What a story and what a rescue! I love reading stories like this.

Thanks for not being too humble to share Traveller_GG, and good luck to Nightstrider :).

Me, humble? [squeeeee]

Being slightly more serious: I got asked to help, we're stuck out here on the far side of nowhere and without each other we're basically stuffed. It's been great fun, very challenging and will make a good story when we're done. It's also something that's not been done before, so is part of the emergent gameplay that the people of this forum are rightly becoming famous for. The fact that people even felt they could ask is something as well... we are the embodiment of the anarchic ideal (suggest you go look up what that means if you think I'm talking about riots and lawlessness) and long may we not rule

Traveller and i just found something soo cool.

They are less then 10 000 KM apart.

We just made it out of the abyss. Took some inventive plotting and in the end only 5 x j1 jumps :) All that worry.... Saw some amazing sites on the way:

This was the final route out that we took, as you can see we were a little east of the intended one and pretty much paralleled it all the way.

That was pretty hard work that... but when we jumped a bridge of a couple of j1 jumps and could suddenly plot over 200LY we knew we were going to be okay. Things did get sparse again, but some vertical thinking got past that worry. We're now back in the arm and able to plot 1000LY.

Next stop: The Bubble :)

Homebound!

We've done it!!!

Traveller_GG and I made it out the hellhole that was my abyss.

After finding the first few jumps out we found some worlds that had polonium germanium and vanadium.
This got me up to 38 j1's, 28 j2's and 13 j3's these were hard earned due to rock desync or due to just no rocks around to shoot.

We decided the continue south as we were over halfway through the abyss, Careful rerouting and fume jumping got us far.
The first 400 ly were the slowest after that we found some massive star clusters and with it eccentric planets.

Like this one 27 earth masses, 2.32g, ringed ice world.

Which was just amazing! I got this cool panorama shot from the surface.
Landing on such a massive world gives you an immense sense of scale, As you hit OC the world is already flat and fills your horizon.
I got this pano from the surface quite happy how it turned out.

Or this other pair of planets we found that were less then 10000km away from each other simply stunning.

After all of this muckin about we put our iron horses in high gear and started trail blazing forward. Traveller_GG doing most of the work cause he could see jumps that were fumes for me.

I would sincerely like to thank him for taking at least 4 days out of his daily playtime to get me out of here, But now we have a great story and experiences we'll talk about for years to come.

Here is a map highlighting the route. There is a lot of vertical jumps in this route but the edd map is poor at showing this.

After 2,306.67ly from the rescue point I'm now able to plot a Kylie at a time.
With only 6 j1's used I come out of this with more jumponium I've had in a long while.
Traveller_GG's fume plotting and careful thinking are to thank for this
I'm bubble bound with many episodes of Stargate SG-1 to keep me entertained.

Keep the kettle on mum, I'm coming home tonight!

Congratulations on making it out of the Abyss! And what a stunning view, that planet is so close by!

I'll say now that there was a lot of "jump to an area and pray there's a route" moments, and the last one that took 2 consecutive j1 jumps was a complete leap of faith :) Worked out well though, as soon as we completed the 2nd one, the map opened up. The orange hat was invaluable and viewing the Galaxy map on realistic really helps show up the adjacent stars.

I was so eager to get out I was skipping Water Worlds and actually missed an Earth like as well!

Nightstrider was following my path out and he picked it up as he went past. Basically I was plotting ahead as my slightly longer range allowed me to see much further on. He Nav locked to my path and followed. I was just focussed on getting out as by that time, the lack of long distance plots for so long was starting to grind.

My God. It's been a year.

I was thinking about this adventure the other night and realised with the massive increases in jump ranges, things like this will never happen again. It's made me kind of wistful but then I've also realised that we were the lucky ones that went out to the edges before it became 'too' easy. We had the worries and uncertainty that we might not make it back.

We need another galaxy :)
