Advice for PC config Elite VR ready

Hi guys, I'm thinking about buying a rift to play Elite.

Here is my current config, I already know my CG is not enough so I'd like to know which you would recommand, I don't if the CPU is powerful enough. Game runs great on 1080 screen but I know that's not enough for VR.

Graphic card : SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon HD7950 3072 Mo / 3 Go GDDR5 - 925/55OO MHz - PCI Express 3.0
CPU : AMD CPU FX8350 Socket AM3+ 4GHz 16Mo ( 8M+8M)
Motherboard : MSI 760GA-P43 (FX) Socket AM3+ Chipset AMD 760G - DDR3 - 1x PCIE ...
RAM : DDR 3 G.Skill Ripjaws X Series: 16 Go ( 4x4Go)- PC 12800 1600 Mhz ...
Power : Corsair CX Bronze - 500W

Thank you.

That...is a fairly old spec PC - much like my old one.

Your main issues will be the GC. The CPU is acceptable for VR, it apparently doesn't show on compatibility tools, but it WILL work.

The GC on the other hand is not good enough. It WILL work, if overclocked to within an inch of it's life, but the lack of VRAM will ultimately be its undoing.

Realistically, you're looking for a 1070 for optimal performance, or a 1060 for good performance at the cost of some graphical fidelity. In AMD's camp, the RX 580 looks to be the best (and cheaper) option for VR although I've not seen any authentic benchmarks to back that up.

You could possibly buy older cards, such as a 980ti, which will work. However, I wouldn't recommend it as the newer cards run better and are more likely to be driver supported for longer. And, they have a better resale value if you wanted to upgrade from a 1060 to say a 1070.

TL;DR: Get a 1080, or a 1070 if you can. A 1060 will do the job. Or hold on for the cheaper AMD RX 580, and see if they perform just as well.
Everything else is golden.

And don't forget to check the PSU is enough :D

That RX580 will be fine. I was going to buy one myself very recently but all the bitcoin miners have them and I couldn't find any in stock here in the UK - so I got a 1060 instead - which runs ED's HMD-Ultra settings no problem. An RX580 is a slight rebadge of the RX480 from last year (with slightly better clock speeds) which is more than enough for ED (and most other) VR. A 1070 is a better card, but, of course, more expensive. One big difference is the 1060 draws much less power than the RX580, so runs cooler and cheaper and puts less demand on your power resources.

It's not just the CPU but also newer chipsets will be better suited to synching and keeping down latency for all devices.

VR is very system taxing because everything has to work without latency, not just cpu and gpu calculations but all the connected devices as well.
A hiccup for one sensor becomes either a bump in the tracking or a forced pause on the CPU and dropped frames.
Even using USB3 expansion cards only mitigate an obvious problem.

I also suspect that oculus runtimes and vr has been polished and particularly streamlined for 6 and 7 series Intel CPU and chipsets since most with such systems report far better results than I get with my i7 4790k.

Or it could just be they notice dips less than I do, but the evidence is mounting the other way.

Quite possibly. I'm running a i5 6600 (6 series Intel) with my gtx 1060 and it certainly seems smooth to me.

Exactly, I am curious though, do we consider ASW active as 'smooth' or full 90 as smooth.
Technically ASW is smooth, but leaves artefacting.
Which I find rather immersion breaking so my aim is to not need ASW and have a steady 90fps as much as possible.

And my old setup with an i5 4 series and the 980ti was not even able to maintain 30fps in res sites.
Nearly completely regardless of graphics settings.

Upgrading to an I7 CPU, faster RAM and the 1080ti sure has helped but there are still hiccups.

Thank you guys. Yeah I had some doubt about cpu too since I'm sometimes at 40% capacity on stations.

What CPU would you recommand along with a RX580?
