Caveat 1 - I've had a few
Caveat 2 - despite my age I never played Elite, Frontier, Wing Commander or the like, no in those days it was all about Civ, SimCity, Age of Empires, Duke Nukem and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
A year or so ago I started playing Kerbal Space Program, which inevitably lead to watching Scott Manley on you tube. After bashing my way through Scott's tutorials and Interstellar Space Program vids I watched a few of his Elite Dangerous Alpha videos. I sat up and took notice, right up until I saw the $300 price of admission.
Flash forward a few months and something got me to check out Star Citizen. Next thing I know I'm $140 lighter but I have a Freelancer and Alpha access to my name. A few weeks latter I'm in for another $200. While I'll admit I was initially sucked in by the ships (shiny shiny ships) and the hype it was the lore CIG was building that sucked me in.
Flash forward another month or so and Arena Commander is on the horizon but likely to be delayed once again. A second look at Elite and suddenly $150 for the Premium Beta doesn't seem all that bad relative to the $350 I spent on hanger fluff in SC. A few more YouTube videos and the why can't there be two BDSSE logic sets in. While ED looked to be a less ambitious, and certainly less hyped game than SC it looked like it was going to be a lot of fun. I reasoned that they are both looking at the BDSSE idea from different perspectives there's no reason Chris and David can't both pull it off. My only concern about ED relative to SC is that ED wouldn't be able to measure up to the lore CIG was creating for SC (reference caveat 2 that I have no prior lore to justify my expectation).
Present day, I'm happy to report that I'm finding the lore behind ED every bit as immersive and entertaining as that in SC. I'm not a role player by any means but I enjoy having enough of a back story that I begin to care about the universe I'm playing in. I've read a few of the ED books, but it's the last few news letters, particularly the P Cell scandal and the sudden down turn in Hauler sales that complete the imersiveness for me. The way that what's going on in GalNet ties in with what's going on in game has got me thoroughly sucked in.
TLDR - love the lore of ED and drunk enough to post about it.
