Proposal Discussion one computer, multiple accounts

I hope the login system in use in the beta carries over into the game itself as i'd like to have the ability to access multiple ED accounts from one install of the game on a single computer.

because of the age range of the backers there are quite a few people out there whose kids will also be playing this game, but not every family can afford a top end gaming PC for every member. if you could access more than one player account from a single install it would avoid having to share an account with anyone, and i'm not thinking that your kids would mess up your saves - more like the other way around from what i've seen of the skills of the younger players. :D

for me it will be a chance to let my friends play without interfering with any of my saves, a 'demo account' if you will.

in fact this gives me an idea: from what has been said so far each account will have x number of save positions available (3 has been mentioned), why not give people the option of buying extra save positions instead of another account?

so you have the option of buying a second account for the full price of £35, or you can add a save slot to your existing account for £12.

useful addition or griefer's charter?

Allowing that could lead to problems with sanctions that are applied to the whole install. It'd be alright though as long as the saves are isolated by a password wall (which you'd likely want anyway if sharing a computer/install), as the sanction can then be applied to the relevant walled section.

Another thing is they'd be losing out on the expansion purchase as well, buit that can be factored into the price of that save purchase.

I cannot see why it would be a problem having separate accounts on one computer. There are three accounts in our household and, although everyone has their own computers, I have logged my account on to one of the others for test purposes. The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is controls. Where one person might have one set of controls and the associated bindings the other person may have a different set. But this can be got around if each person had their own log in on that computer. Bindings etc. are stored in the Windows user accounts.

This has been suggested numerous times as something to offer in the MT shop - more commander slots.

Your price ( £12 ) seems steep, however that's something for FD to decide.

i can see your point, for 2 people using the same computer i would still go with a separate account, the extra saves slots would be for personal use or the odd (supervised) guest.

locking off saves within an account would be a charter to grief though as then you could harass, intimidate and generally be a nasty player on one account then when action against you by moderation was taken, switch to a second and carry on without interruption.

i went with £12 as the current price of the whole game and 3 saves is £35 - i just divided by 3 and rounded off.

I think it is perfectly fine that an identity is linked to purchased copy of the game. You want another account? You buy another copy.

I can imagine people having the ability to play on a local area network on one copy, but lowering the bar for the online version that far would be a griefer's charter indeed, imo.

Besides, what in it for FD?

No, I get the maths, but another slot is not the same as 1/3 the price of the full game (given we have 3 slots to begin with) - with another account you can play 2 of them simultaneously where as with a new slot you can't.

(I also appreciate it was just for demonstration purposes)

To add also - it can't / won't be a griefers charter given that ignores / bans should be account wide. Find yourself ignored on 1 commander and the rest will be too.

Multiple commander slots seems like almost a must have to me. I mean, we might want to roleplay different playing styles (pirate, trader, explorer, etc.) depending on our mood. If you've only one slot then it might just make it too risky to try a different style of play that might end up with you being obliterated.

It also makes it safer to let a visiting friend (and potential new customer) have a go with risking your progress, credits and reputation.

True. There are some sanctions that FD might want to apply to one section of an account that they might be happy not to apply to everyone on the same install (dangerous driving, friendly fire). Proper cheating/griefing sanctions would be applied to the whole account though.

A true griefer could always stump up for another account. Still, it's a small barrier I suppose.

to handle that sort of situation i really hope the final game includes some sort of demo game in offline SP, it would give you the option of several different ships/load-outs and a few credits to start but not have the ability to save your progress, quit the game and you lose the lot.

offline only so you cant use it to suicide grief but enough to get someone hooked ;)
