Derelict Space Stations

I'm imagining a top secret mission where you have take a small ship inside a derelict Coriolis to scope some data. I'm thinking like going inside the Death Star in Return of the Jedi, and only small ships will fit through the corridors. Inside the twisting passageways you find automated and manned resistance, some other other pirates. You need to get in, get the data, and get out, before they find you.

I like the idea of an abandoned station, maybe you have to fly in and scan a crashed ship or a data beacon. Ideally you'd want something like this to come after space legs, then you can disembark and have a mooch around

Great idea!

Almost a CQC against the engine, and if the station can be located deep inside an asteroid field to make the access more complicated it would be awesome!

Reality is that the game needs more variety for action!
Right now we only have USS, Resource Extraction sites and Combat Zones. This really limits the options and makes the combat game play repetitive.

A station is too valuable to just be abandoned, so I love the idea of some terrifying plague or fungus, a quarantined derelict manned only by the dead.

Maybe with creepy organic protrusions growing throughout the interior, so what would normally be the spacious docking area now contains a dangerous maze of ropy tendrils

No-wonder the mission is highly-illegal! :D

Might work as an SRV mission and be a stepping stone for FD to implement the "space legs" component of the game? Doing it this way FD could map out corridors and access ways that we could one day walk (or run like hell being chased by who knows what) through. Something for the future? I think so. ;)

Don't take me wrong, but realistically, do you know anyone who likes to drive the SRV and do surface missions with it?

I really don't play the game to drive a buggy in low g. I'm here to fly mate!

Walking in the game is a different story. I would like to walk inside my ship no doubt!

As long as they don't name them Rogue Outposts, I'm all for it.
This is the Rogue Outpost™, deep space explorer \o/ :

I do. Doing high sec base assaults in your srv, screaming toward the base to get undercover from the circling ship, taking out the skimmers than a mad sprint across open country trying to dodge incoming fire before rendezvousing with your ship and taking out the enemy or high waking. Go to be one of the most fun things you can do in this game.

Ok, so maybe you might be able to help me with some tips.
What do you do to have a good control of the SRV?

I'm driving my CRV with the fligh tick, but everytime I try to speed up (above 20) it gets difficult to control and I can easily spin. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes! Humanity has been out among the stars for a thousand years; so I think derelict, abandoned and incomplete stations should be as common throughout the bubble as ruined castles are today in somewhere like Scotland.

They could be a new source of specific gameplay types (like OP describes: stealth missions involving sneaking down corridors in a Sidewinder, etc.), but even if not, IMO they don't need to have a huge amount of programming work put into them to be interesting, they would just need art assets for dilapidation and chunks having been stripped away by meteors and scrap metal thieves. Even if they are just something like the installations we already have, that would be great. Use them as rendezvous points for missions, maybe some have pirates hanging out at them, let us fly though them, and fight in and around them. Maybe materials spawn around them as they break apart, or let us use mining lasers to bust materials free of the hull as a form of salvage activity. Make them completely dark inside so that we have to use our ship's lights to see what we're doing. It would be atmospheric and very, very cool, for what I imagine (in my inexpert imagination) to be a reasonably small amount of effort, based on existing assets and AI.

I actually enjoy taking my SLF out to fly through the new stations from CQC, Mega Ships, etc.

Now if there was a mission to go along with that it would be cool!

Probably not. On low gravity planets/moons, the SRV does that. I tend to go as fast as I can while maintaining semi-control of the vehicle. I fire up the jets, to jump over any big rocks, all while watching the scanner for interesting signals.

I really like the idea of being able to investigate the insides of the derelict mega-ships and abandoned stations.

Play with Drive Assist ON/OFF. Under certain conditions (low g, high speed, flat terrain with bumps) I find Drive Assist ON counter-productive when I want to take a steep turn.

Yep, I really hope investigation of derelicts, ruins, abandoned bases, wreckages and so on... both in space and on surfaces are planned. It would extend SRV usefulness and a cornerstone for "spacelegs" activities.

I remember when the first remote settlements were discovered, like Don Antonaci's, and by glitching with the debug cam we could see innards of base module are somehow more detailed than necessary:

Great idea OP +1, although I'm not sure it will happen.

I recall watching Josh Hawkin's video when he first went into an asteroid base. He was hoping there would be a winding corridor inside and it would be very different to the current stations. FDev had a great opportunity there to make something special and different but went the safe route instead and made it the same as every other Coriolis in the galaxy.
