Ever go to the grocery and buy something, and have your wife look at you and declare "You cook that!" and walk off?

It never ends well.

I found a sale on smoked herrings. Bought a pack. Cooked it, intending to win that little point.

Now, we have to open all the windows...[knocked out]

People going by in the street are crossing the road to get away.
This had better be delicious. But I suspect, it won't be.

I thought the idea of smoked was that you didnt have to cook it.

Smoked herring is already cooked. And is served cold.
I imagine it's going to be a little on the dry side.

I have just seen recipes with smoked herring. Especially in the potato gratin. Cooking at 200 ° C

If he's using it in a recipe as an ingredient that's different. But it sounded like he was cooking just the smoked herring which can be oily and smells bad when burned.

Define; 'Cooked it'?

So some things smell terrible and taste great, some things smell great and taste terrible.

One time years ago my wife and I closed the bar the night before we intended to go up in the woods with a bunch of friends and I was going to smoke a chicken. Unfortunately package liquor is not available after midnight and when we got home at 2am I realized the only thing I had for a marinade was some pretty good 15yr old scotch. No problem drunk me thought, I'll make a marinade of that. Whipped it up, set the chicken to marinating and crashed.

Next morning, chicken smelled great, hop in the truck, drive up to mountains and commence to smoking said chicken.

Many hours later the chicken still smelled wonderful, an interesting blend of hickory, scotch and whatever random BBQ bits I tossed in at 2:30am. Sadly it tasted exactly like a shot of funky scotch with the texture of chicken. It was really really atrocious, but man it smelled good.

Aha, ok.

Soaked it in water for a bit, then discarded the water.
Sautéed it with onions in a big iron pot. For maybe 5-6 minutes. Added pepper, dried herbs.

Nothing fancy.
That's more or less how it's prepped in the islands.
Memo to self: Add smoked Herring to the, don't boil fish list. My nan used to boil yellow fish for her cats. Fortunately it was only once a week.

I'm a fishmonger, so I kind of like smoked fish anyway, but rep for trying something new OP, and the smell will go away, In a year or so...
