What'll be your commander name?

I originally played Age of Empires II back in '97.
In order to play online in the early days of dial up interneting, I had to have an online name.

The nice people at Ensemble Studios had an in-game random name generator.

...and so Snowymonk was born.

I have tried to use the same gamer-tag in games, platforms and social media apps wherever possible.
I think that the only app I haven't got is Flickr, to which some mountain biker in North America reckons he wants to be Snowymonk.

So on 27th June, 20 years after he was created, Commander Snowymonk will be heading out into space.

Hold on a minute!! You mean we cannot create a frontier account and choose our commander name?
We have to use our PSN id? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Heck man I hate that :(

a: I wanted to have my real name as my Cmdr name, not my psn id (which isn't really going to be a good cmdr name at all)
b: I'm going to run into a lot of cmdr xX_lolo_Xx, types. doh! haha

a pity tbh.. and I don't think Sony allow you to change your psn id. Grrr :(

You can blame Frontier for this one. ESO lets me create 8 different characters with any name I choose as long as it's available, and since they allow spaces in the name, it's not that hard to create an unused name that sounds like a name. ESO also monetizes this by allowing users to purchase more character slots. Perhaps someday Frontier will follow this model.

Can't you set up a separate log in on the Ps4 with a different name

You could but then you would need to get a separate PS Plus sub for that account if you want to play in anything other than solo. Since most of us have other friends playing other games it would not be a reasonable thing to do.

I have two users on my ps4 and only one of them has a ps+ account and I've never had a problem playing multiplayer on the 2nd user.

Some games don't. I will have to look to see if it is in the FAQ but it was posted before that a plus sub would be needed for anything other than solo. I would assume by that, that they are looking at the users access. I could be way off but that is the way I understand it.

I just checked and Ps+ can be used to play online game for other users on that console. Conclusion: create a new user on your ps4 with a new name and just make sure that you use that user when you first launch ED.
please correct me if my logic is wrong.

i have 2 users on my PS4 acidburn2k20 is psn+, and the other is my first account that i decided not to delete just because of nostalgia

I just created a new account for Jenny, and it was relatively easy if you have a spare email to use. Her account name actually looks like a real name, except for a _ instead of a space. I verified that I have access to multiplayer using this alternate account (my primary account being the only one with PS+). It was fun being thrown in with a bunch of beginners in Overwatch while having real skills ;)

Ooooh, and now I have 8 more character slots in ESO!

I completely forgot about PS+, lol.
If i'm not mistaken, there's a sale right now on the 12months subscription, 35€ instead of the usual 50€.
I miss the Ps3 era, when online was free... Oh well... [sad]

Blame Microsoft - they pioneered "Pay to play"

So true, Old Duck...
I could care less about the PS+ monthly games, discounts and whatnot. It's really sad that i have to pay that much money just to play online, when actually most games don't even have dedicated servers. Nowadays everythings seems to be p2p. What am i actually paying then? Bah... I already pay my ISP, gimme a break Sony! [blah]

I have actually worked out a way that my PS+ sub is free. Basically I have a Playstation Visa that has reward points at Sony Rewards website. When you pay your cell phone bill you get 3 point for every dollar spent. I have damn cell phone bill that is stupid with me, wife, 3 kids and my sister in law on it. 300 a month, so 900 points a month. On top of that if I buy something on it from the ps store I get 10x points. 50 dollar game is 500 points. My cell phone bill alone scores me over 10k points a year. I can get a 12 month PS+ for 6k points. Extra points go to prepaid card amounts to add to my PS Wallet. Top that off with I pay the card off each month.

I don't blame Microsoft, I do blame the idiots that paid for it, had they had some willpower and a spine, no one would have paid and within a few months Microsoft would have been forced to drop the idea.
