Youtuber Kornelius Briedis seems to have had it with Fdevs

Kinda sums up the random nature of this community. I can remember when his channel used to get lots of down votes, people used rip into the poor guy over his accent, now apparently he's some youtube god and ED's sales depends on his words of wisdom :-/ Yeaah right.. He had some good vids for people who weren't sure about making builds, also a lot of good stuff on stats.. That's as far as it got.

You must be wrong sir.
The way people talk on here it must be the end of everything now that this YouTuber is gone.
Shame the galaxy had to end this way. Game over I guess...oh wait...I still like playing it.
I'm confused now.

You're mistaken. Watch the video. He doesn't go on and on about it, but he definitely left unwillingly, not because he simply "got bored". Briefly, in the beginning of the video, he mourns the current state of Elite, and express his displeasure with the direction Frontier has taken. And almost sadly going on to wonder how to fill the void left by Elite, a game he loved and promoted, and criticized with the best intentions.

But ultimately, he left because there was something more fun. And is one person. I don't think it enormously rational or persuasive to run a line of debate along the lines of 'Some respected player has left the game for reasons that he hasn't really detailed but I'm willing to extrapolate as matching my own bugbears, so the game is doomed and FD need to wake up and listen [to *me* obviously]'.

Among the many quotes from Kornelius from the youtube comments:

yeah, but it's hard to play and enjoy the game that is going wrong way and with every new update it is further and further from what i was expecting several years ago. their priorities are totally wrong, but that's just my opinion.

i still hope there will be space sims to play in future, i really wanted elite to be my ultimate game ;/

i still don't get devs - why they don't want players to have fun and enjoy, to do what we want and not force EVERY single player to do exactly same action. someone like to drive buggy, someone hate, one who loves driving should gather resources and sell to players who hate, same goes for almost all parts, it's so easy to set a level cap of 600 (like in ESO) and make set item drops in specific dungeons filled with AI that act exactly same every single time so you are forced to go there and do same crap over and over again..when they will realize that players must be given tools to influence and move game, if majority want anarchy and chaos it means that's their fun, if majority want law and order it will be, what are they so afraid of? same time i don't mind that but then make special events every week, special scenarios, game masters must work hard to give players stuff to do... if i would be behind elite i would give some of best players choice to lead thargoid invasion themselves - nobody would know that thargoid fleets are managed by players (unless they tell it) and game would be much more fun because thargoids would be unpredictable ;)

Does this sound like someone who was just bored and moved on? Or someone who didn't say explicitly why he left?

Kornelius is a person of vision and insight, and definitely left his mark on the game (not least of which is the doubled material locker size and removal of commodities as engineer ingredients! And of course the SLF rebalance that finally made the Condor and Taipan into viable alternatives to the Imp Fighter). Frontier should hire someone just like him to help them revamp their gameplay. My sincere hope is that they did something like this when they decided to revamp the Core Gameplay elements. They really some fresh ideas!

If I quit playing the game in a weeks time, can I have my own thread about it too?

If other people agree it's significant, sure why not? KB didn't make this thread or ask for any attention. He's moved on. It's the people who appreciated his contribution and opinion of the game that are bothered and posting here.

Yeah, but conversely GTA5 isn't a niche game within a niche market. People know what it is and know what to expect. Elite is a different beast, many people looking into it these days will be looking at it as a fresh IP. The public discourse surrounding it will have a far greater impression on the potential market than it does for GTA5.
Agony_Aunt, in this comment Soopyyy says "GTA5 IS NOT a niche game, and then implies that Elite Dangerous IS a niche game.

I can't believe you actually said that.

First google hit reports 75 million have been sold. That's one hell of a niche. ED is a niche game, GTA... hell no. Its got mass market appeal.

Its like your entire post is backwards!

Here you agree with him that GTA5 is NOT a niche game, and affirm that ED is a niche game, then reiterate that you do not believe GTA5 is a niche game.

You then finish the post with "..you're entire post is backwards!"

Agony_Aunt, what part of his post is backwards? Your post is perfectly straight forward, and Soopyyy has said exactly the same thing, but in a slightly different way. I have to ask; are you actually reading these posts, or just replying to what you wanted people to have said? Because if you are seeking out conflict where there is none to be had, that is highly unprofessional behavior.

that is highly unprofessional behavior.

Your get the I was posting as a forum member not a mod, even though they continue to do both in threads although AA is not as guilty as some of them.

Anyways weren't we here to pay respects to some Zlist you tube star or something.

Huh.
And I thought that, once again, the usual gang was using this as another excuse to whine about or push their own ideas forward.
Oh well...carry on.

Here is a list of games that have maintained their userbase :

Counter strike
Team Fortress 2
Dota
League of legends
Eve
World of Warcraft
Star Trek online
Star wars knights of the old republic
Planet side 2
Left 4 dead
SMITE
Rocket League

All those either still have a considerable player base or have a Growing player base.

For some of them, it is an offense to them to compare it with ED. Gosh...

Probably not....

Kornelius was a well known figure in the ED community who posted a lot of interesting and insightful videos about the game. But he seemingly grew disillusioned with its progress and direction and that was it... He dropped it.

I'd suggest this is the same disillusionment that quite a few of the community are having which accounts for the greater amount of negativity we see on the fourm? Indeed, IMHO this in turn probably even accounts for the recent announcement from FD to finally go back and give the core of the game some love...

We're at a bit of an important moment IMHO. We'll see the direction the game is going to take. Deeper more involved mechanics and gameplay, or continued simpler bolt on affairs...

There are lots of comments much worse than Agony_Aunt's. But none of them are coming from a Moderator. I expect a little more from a moderator than everyone else in the forums. At the very least, he should be reading the comments he is replying to, especially if he's being critical of them, while he says exactly the same thing.

I enjoyed his videos. I have used his data results to help with loadout decisions, however, if he needs to take time out, that is OK. It does not mean that FDev need to scrap any future plans or do a 180 on current content.

Many players, irrespective of their game choice, will always need to take a time out to reestablish their love of any given game. Lots of times they come back because ED is an awesome game and has been since 1984.

There's a premise that some folks are leaving the game because it's simply not becoming what they'd hoped. ie: They were aware it was released in a "placeholder" state, but they are getting concerned after a 2.5yr track record, that too much gameplay will remain simplistic. And/or too much being added is questionable/ill-conceived.

I think it's not a coincidence we've had the announcement of core improvements. The question is what will this deliver, and what will we get going forwards? Deeper more involved mechancs? 2.4-->3 is going to be interesting!

I wondered what happened to him as I enjoyed his videos. Seems he has given up on the game due to many bad designs. It's a real shame. Fdev, you need to wake up.

it sounds like a great game... but totally not my bag... ED is far from a perfect game with parts which are nothing like what we were told in the dev diaries etc... however that said, I get the feeling that, whilst some of his videos were interesting in ED, I get the feeling that what he wants from ED was not even really on the cards. Even IF ED ticked everyone of those early dev diary and DDF boxes, i still am not sure ED would be the game he wants it to be.

Seeking out conflict sounds like a pattern for his posts. Next step he will apologise, but damage to thread is done. Probably another advisory or infraction for me, but truth must be told.
