Engineers Mining grind for Selene Jean access. Insights?

I'm not much on mining (given the way it stands in the game), but need to mine 500 tons of ore to access Selene Jean.

I don't really care what ores or how much money I make doing it.

Given that, what pointers would you have?

I know I need to equip mining lasers, refineries, prospecting controllers/limpets, collection controllers/limpets, etc.

What I'm looking for is more insightful suggestions about technique etc. Maybe, for instance, I can forgo the prospecting if I do xyz? Techniques to fend off pirates while mining such as turrets and/or SLFs? Other suggestions?

Thanks

Don't do what I did, and take a Type 7 out that was so poorly configured that I had to shut the shields off to mine and collect anything :D

Having said that - it was interesting :D

Good thought!

I was actually thinking of doing a mining Corvette or Anaconda with big shields, turrets which I can put or automatic and SLFs.

If all you want is to mine 500 tons of anything fast:

1. Don't bother mining in res sites - yes you get a boost to the number of fragments but it's not really worth the hassle of constantly fighting pirates in a haz res. Just mine pristine rings anywhere other than a res site.
2. If you do the above, pirates won't bother you at all other than maybe a scan on arrival and as long as you're only carrying limpets they won't attack. I don't even have a shield on my mining Python let alone weapons and I've never lost it.
3. Do use prospectors because although you won't care about knowing what you're mining, you will care about the extra fragments that you get from a prospected rock compared to an unprospected one.

No idea what ships you have access to but I'd go with a Python or an Anaconda.

The main thing to know with mining 500 tonnes for Selene Jean is that you don't have to sell any ore, just refine it. If you keep ejecting cargo you can do the whole lot in a single trip.

Any ship can mine, but you preferably want something fast enough to outrun pirates in case you lose connection in the ring, since reconnecting will cause them to spawn and attack you for what you've already mined. A ship strong enough to just kill pirates is also an option, primarily if you're mining in one of the big three. Cargo capacity is less important for you than to profit-focused miners, assuming you elect to abandon the ore rather than sell it.

As for equipment: You don't need more than a couple of class 2 mining lasers. A small refinery is fine since you don't have any particular target materials, but having at least half a dozen bins will reduce babysitting. Use a prospector on each rock even though you don't need to see its composition, because they double the number of fragments you get out of it. Bring more collector limpet controllers than you think you need (seriously, everybody underestimates this at first and it's the largest factor determining how fast you mine). Bring at least 50% of your cargo capacity in limpets, you'll probably end up ejecting some since you aren't using prospectors to hunt for good rocks, but they're cheap and running out means the end of the mining trip.

Finally, don't forget to hang onto 10t of painite for the final part of unlocking Selene Jean :)

Edit: Also, do yourself a favour and take Red's advice about just dropping at a random spot in the ring. Res sites are for bounty hunting.

As soon as you gain the first tons of ore the hell of pirates may fall over you as happened to me when I went to 20 Ophiuchi to the pristine metallic rings for the same task. First you need 500 tons of ore and after that another 10 tons of painite.

One caveat about that no-shield thing....

It's quite likely you'll be interdicted on the way home. Make sure if you don't run shields, that your hull is at least strong enough to survive while boosting away from the pirates until SecServ shows up.

This is valid. I have modded military armour on mine; however I also have grade 5 dirty drives and I honestly can't remember the last time anything interdicted me and then managed to actually hit me to begin with. :D

Thanks guys! Really good insights! +rep all round.

PS: I don't fly any ship anywhere without at least some shields!

Here's a Bulk Mining Anaconda.

Set up a firegroup with your mining lasers and all collector controllers on the primary button and the prospector on the secondary.
Half full your hold with limpets.
Go to a random spot in a pristine metallic ring.
Kill the pirates, or let them scan you and they will go away.
Look for roids that aren't rotating, fire a prospector at it.
Open your cargo hatch.
Regardless of what's in it, fly up and start drilling.
Repeat.

Three 40 minute trips and you're done. You'll probably have enough painite as well.

Follow what Lizard said. The large distributor, medium mining lasers and plethora of collectors are key. The A grade prospector is important to get more fragments per asteroid so you don't have to move that much. The good drives are important so you are fast once you do have to move.

Considering you don't care about the profits, you can go out with a full hold of limpets and eject refined tons (keeping at least 10 tons of painite to donate) until you have refined 500 tons total. Then it'll only be one trip.

I had a breeze in Python doing this. I might admit I enjoyed it, just be sure to get proper loadout and bunch of collector limpets.

And of course, don't forget to fill up your cargo bay with limpets before going for the ring... 70 to 80% of your cargo bay is enough. And don't forget to check the properties of the ring you're about to mine (rocky, metallic, ice...). IIRC, for painite, you're looking for metallic ones. I did these 2 mistakes in 2 consecutive runs, had nice but unprofitable trips :D

Thank you for the info in this thread. After spending 8 hours of refining 500 minerals I was about to give up when I discovered that you couldn't buy painite

And to specify some info: the metallic rings are the one nearest the planet.

I just loaded all cargobays with limpets and spammed prospect ones on all nearby asteroids. Had collected the necessary painite in 40 minutes!

Only read the first few replies but in case not mentioned nothing says you need to sell the ore, so I plan to just toss it into space as I fill up

I've never understood why pirates try to shake me down. They could just follow along behind grabbing cans of crap that I don't want.

But yeah, Python is great for this. I use this list of ore, but you can really just jettison anything that doesn't sell for over @7000 per ton. You can get a few mill per trip, though it's not fast.

Or, you can spam planetary scan missions and make WAY more money in a few minutes. Which is why I'm probably not going to bother mining anymore.

Brilliant loadout, I'll be working on this tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll retrofit my Anaconda, or build a Python with a mini version of your build https://eddp.co/u/DU3AnLGa

That's so true. I went mining in my mining python midweek, had a sufficiently good time on the edge of a haz res that I was dumping palladium to make room for platinum by the end of it, I must have droppedd about 350k's worth :D
