[...] in hindsight, the HIP 17044 convoy is rather peculiar. The capships were not named, whoever heard of a capital ship without a naming ceremony?

I noticed that, too. I was going to be the first to mention it but you beat me to the punch!

I think this is one of those occasions where it is okay for Michael Brookes (or anybody else in the know) to clarify: are we seeing what we're supposed to be seeing, or is the absence of nameplates a programmatical oversight? This is important, because the implications are potentially huge.

Pure wild speculation,

But if FD have been showing new in-game assets to people behind closed doors, it makes sense they exist somewhere in the game.
I wonder if they've put these cave structures (that keep being talked about in various articles) in the Cave Nebula. (as a joke for themselves)

More likely on private Dev servers.

Look, clearly the alien attack convoy was just some terrible misunderstanding. Clearly the Thargoid flower just wanted to scan those ships to get data so he can engineer his ship up and something went wrong, maybe one of the assault ships or fighters bumped another ship at a speed greater than 100 earning a bounty fine and causing all hell to break loose or maybe the capital ship gunner bumped his fire button with his elbow while brewing some tea. Either way, a shooting war happened and we'll never know who is truly to blame. :D

Maybe the Thargoid had a griefer enter multicrew via telepresence and just start lighting up everything in sight?

Just throwing sa theory out here. May have been mentioned before.
Yes we know these ships are Thargoids, they may or may not be attack Fed ships.

Maybe the Thargoids are running from something. We know the unknown artefacts cause damage to whatever ship carries them, and that the meta alloys from barnacles negate this action.
We also know that unknown artefacts have been found by crashed Thargoid vessels. They could possibly be weapons (mines maybe) from another species, such as the other variants of Goids.
Perhaps the Thargoids are running, using the barnacles to repair.

Think of the ancient conflict from the Halo series, ancient humans invading Forerunner space at a terrifying pace. Turns out they were running from the flood the whole time. Could be similar.
Or the Thargoids are trying to strip us of Meta Alloys.

Holy s*** the notion of something as scary as the Flood coming after the Thargoids gave me the creeps.

All I'm sayin' is I ain't seen no Thargoid ship shoot at nobody...

...actually I haven't seen any Thargoid ships at all despite hours of trying... thanks FD and RNGesus...

yup - exactly the same as when they have/had the CQC booths that were local only: a private build. Probably without a server-side sim or stellar forge attached to it.

Not that I ever want this game to end, but it does intrigue me how much hardware you'd need at home to run a truly 'local' copy of it. That's not a discussion for this thread, though :)

There is also the possibility that the dumb Feds picked up something in a cave, that hatched onboard. :D

Ah yes...

And I reckon we're going to be 'offered' the opportunity to make the same mistake. The precedent is there with MAs.

Anything new and exotic (think: egg sacs) will most likely be very valuable indeed - the kind of thing that has the ability to make people very rich. It might even be that someone like Palin might issue a request for them, possibly because they're needed to solve some other big problem that we're facing. Again: MAs are a precedent.

And it might just be that, unlike MAs - which appear to be a simple by-product - this new and exciting commodity is very important to the flower ships, and that carrying them might just make you public enemy numero uno...

Tinfoil hat plot twist: the Guardians were experimenting with creating life but messed up and created something similar to the Xenomorph but smart to the point of being able to steal ships and travel to kill everyone. Then when all the Guardians died the Parasites formed nests and went into sleep, Thargoids were coming back to human space for revenge/diplomacy when they found one of the nests and started developing weapons to kill the parasites.
Then the feds found the nests and the capital ships in Hip 17044 had the horrible idea of picking up an egg from one of those nests, and it hatched. When the Thargoids saw this they tried to exterminate the parasite, which had already taken control of the ships, then they boarded and incinerated all the corpses to make sure the parasite did not infect other human ships.

There, mistery solved.

I noticed some interesting about HIP 22460 (the locked system) and Merope's relationship in the galaxy map, in that I have been to that region before as part of investigating possible interpretations of the UP signal image. Maybe my Tin Foil Hat is on too tight, but bear with me for a moment.

In a prior posting way back when, I described my current interpretation of the image as a navigation map, with the lower arms of the image representing the rings of Merope 5 (blue) and the orbital track of Merope 5c (Orange).

If you position your ship so that the Merope 5c makes the same angle as one of the image angles, the arc in the upper left might indicate a direction or some relevance for that quadrant. Therefore, by positioning my ship so the rings point to lower right, and the Merope 5c orbit is lower left to upper right we have this view:

I can't target the locked HIP 22460 system directly, but I have aligned another system HIP 26206 with it and Merope:

With that system targeted, the view from the same position looks like this:

Notice something about the navball?

At least it is in the correct quadrant :)

Cheers

the amount of time that habitat is suposed to be there, what 200+ years and yet they are still only withered?? thats a bit unbeleivable dont you think lol but yes looking ta the 6:40 time slot it apears true it was first glance thinking, however we could now call them lettuce ships lol

Oh while im here are Alien crash sites still viable for getting fragments? i need 4 more for palin as i only returned 4 nights ago from a huge trip around the galaxy outskirts of total nearly 7 months, and yes my eyes hurt and my brain was tired lol

Edit: And one more thing I just thought of: That same wreck with the crashed human vessels all had the "claw" marks on them. The derelict Federation capital ships and surrounding supports ships didn't. They had the what appears to be corrosive green "goo" instead. Is it possible that we're dealing with multiple antagonists here? Or perhaps the same antagonist that found a better way to take us out of the fight?

About that wreckage, I had an idea a while ago... assuming that UAs are human reverse engineering tech from something alien (UPs?) found in Col70, maybe the flower ship was caught by an UA laying convoy while stealing some samples for study, and was chased and attacked by the human vessels. As the flower was unarmed and unable to escape, the pilot chose to ram the attacking human vessels and take everyone down with him.
