Why can't we...

Store a ship with cargo in the holds?

Or limpits for that matter.

I'm specifically talking about "switching" to a different ship in a station.

I know my fighter has no room for limpits, just leave them on my mining ship!

It's another deliberate design decision - FD dont wat us to store goods/limpets for some reason at stations. In a storage or ships. Why? Something about hoarding rare goods and affecting background sim or what not.

I think this used to work for limpets anyway but some past update took that away, quite a while ago. I am quite certain that I used to leave fuel limpets on all my ships in storage which was convenient for quick switching to a rescue ship. So yes, I would like to see this come back... for limpets anyway (not really a great idea for other cargo in my opinion)

Good grief that's silly.

Wish poster's had a limit on how many post they could start in a week.

You realize... when you comment on a thread just to whine about it, you've effectively trolled yourself :)

Frontier doesn't want us storing cargo so we can't bulk up on millions of tons of common CG goods on Wednesday and completing 10 Tier CG's on Thursdays minutes after the new CG's start.
They also don't want us stockpiling UA's like nuclear weapons in the 60's, and shutting down CG's minutes after they go live either.

But perhaps if we ask nicely, in large enough numbers, they might meet us half-way, and allow temporary cargo storage so we can change ships, outfit or re-outfit them so we can then take our excess cargo when we're done.

I think this would be a simple enough method - consider:

I pull in to a station in my Type-6 with 80 tons of cargo in my hold. I stopped, because I'm tired of being harassed by pirates and want to switch over to something with some teeth. I happen to have a combat-ready Python stored here, but it only has 64 tons of cargo space on it, and presently I can't switch to it, as I have too much cargo.

Enter Compromise:

I can switch to this ship, with a notification: "Excess cargo has been stored, and will be sold if you disembark from this facility.", much like that bothersome "Don't forget to set your fire groups" message we get.
So I switch ships, but don't want to/can't give up my cargo, so I stop by Outfitting, swap a couple modules around, and now I have 96 tons of space in my python. My excess cargo is transferred back to my ship, and I'm on my way again.

Or, perhaps I can get by without my extra cargo, so I disembark, and just as I clear the mail slot, I get a message: "Cargo left at the station has been sold, for X" (Where X is the current market price of said cargo, minus a 10% charge for not having sold it myself before switching ships.)

What's the difference between a Fuel Limpet, Prospector Limpet, Collector Limpet and a Hatch Breaker Limpet? (And no, this isn't the set up for a corny joke...)

There isn't one. A limpet is a limpet is a limpet. Only the Controller makes a difference, otherwise all limpets are exactly the same. They're just programmed differently.

Stockpiling weapons and resources is a legit tactic IMO. You did the work mining, you should be able to wait for missions for it. Not an exploit.

That's what being a "sandbox" is all about.

I dont like it myself too, I have a trading ship full of cargo, I want to park it WITH the cargo and go flying in my Eagle for a bit... and the game is like NO! You playing a GAME, dont forget that!
Yup and games have rules. One of the rules is no cargo when you store a ship. Sorted.

Let me preface this by saying: I have no idea how long you've been playing.

If you were here prior to the launch of passenger missions you likely recall the horror that was loading the mission boards. Many times it would take several minutes or more to load the mission board, if they loaded at all and didn't end in disconnect.

Now imagine the horrors of 1000+ players with billions of tons of stored cargo.

It could be as simple as a technological limitation that keeps us from storing cargo.
Even and especially if stored cargo was kept client-side, in a file on your PC, it would be only a matter of time before someone figured out a way to edit this and turn a single stored ton of biowaste into 10,000 tons of Painite, so not a good solution.

Storing this server-side could result in drastic performance issues, and let's face it, there are far, far, far more things Elite needs long before we really need to store cargo.

I don't disagree with the validity of tactics of stockpiling, be it weapons, food, water, metals, minerals, medicines, or other supplies - it is a valid tactic, but that's also not what Elite is either.

I am aware of that, but in my profession they are primarily fuel limpets. Now if we could have a repair limpet controller that would be even better. Or how about material transfer limpet controller, so I can send you a much needed material, Polonium for example that might save you.
