General / Off-Topic Is ubisoft going to beat elite and star citizen

Ubisoft announced beyond good and evil 2 at E3 last week. I had no idea what that game is about, but i saw this today:

Space game. The dude in video talk about the game and show their engine, earth like planet etc. tech demonstration.

This can be bad for the future of elite. Star citizen may or may not happen but ubisoft usually deliver good products/games. Also ubisoft has experience about building missions, stories, worlds, gameplay etc. They can fill their games and game worlds. And this dude in video seem as enthusiastic as David Braden or star citizen devs. It will be interesting to see if frontier can compete or want to try compete with Ubisoft, if ubisoft deliver good game space game to market that doesn't have one(elite only has its stellar forge and lack a lot of things in terms of locations, missions, multiplayer stuff etc.).

If we take the frontier dev comments that they aren't doing earth likes etc. soon and haven't done work for that kind of stuff ubisoft may deliver the next spaces game.

I dont think Ubisoft is going to Compete here at all.
The Game is an entirely different Genre.

Currently even Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous are not exactly Competing with each other.
As Star Citizen is doing an Full MMORPG in Space while Elite Dangerous is pretty much a Space Sim with some RPG Elements and Multiplayer Capability.

Star Citizen goes for an Full MMORPG with your Character being what you Control. And your Character again has the ability to Control other things including Spaceships, Ground Vehicles etc.
Elite Dangerous is an Space Sim where you Control your Ship. And maybe some smaller Vehicles as Ship Assets as well as maybe later your Character in a limited manner.
-
Star Citizen is Full Mass Multiplayer and all in the same World without Instancing.
Elite Dangerous goes for mostly Single Player with Limited Multiplayer in heavy Instancing and with very Limited Interaction between Players.
-
Star Citizen is going for Heavy RPG and Cinematic Supported Missions with NPC Interaction and Scripted Events.
Elite Dangerous is going Minimalistic Generic Missions and Community Events instead.
.
Star Citizen is using highly Different and Unique Ships and Weapon Setups with Ships working very differently from each other and Weapons being very different from each other.
Elite Dangerous however is Prioritizing Balancing. Thus keeping all Ships working the same Way as all Ships are Essentially Fighters with Frontal Weapons highly limiting differences between Fighting Styles.
.
Star Citizen is heavily Emphasizing Graphics and Detail Work. Rather having around 100 Star Systems which they slowly flesh out and which have very Unique and very Detailed.
While Elite Dangerous is heavily Emphasizing Size and Numbers. Having an Incredible Galaxy of Billions of Star Systems which are very Generic however.
.
Star Citizen is attempting to get Detailed and Damage Model heavy Combat with alot of Graphics and Effects.
While Elite Dangerous is for most part putting Emphasis onto Physics and reactions but keeping the actual Combat very Arcade with Hit Points for Shields and Hull.

Star Citizen is going with the every Player Occupies his Place in the World setting. So you actually move to a Ship when Multi Crewing. You actually Run around at an Station and walk to your Ship etc etc.
You act entirely Independent from your Ship and might leave it behind or even not have one at all.
Elite Dangerous however is going with the you are your Ship setting. You might leave your Ship as an Tele presence and maybe later as some sort of Spawned Character. But you are Primarily your Ship. Everything is your Ship. You are in effect never really leaving your Ship. Not for Multi Crew and not for anything else. Everything is bound to your Ship.

Comparing Star Citizen to Elite Dangerous is a bit like comparing World of Warcraft to Ultima Online.
They are entirely different beings which only share a similar backround but beyond that little to nothing.

Saw part of the demo last week but thats the first time I watched the interview. Its not the same genre but then its just a tech demo which is very bare bones gameplay wise. I would think its way too early to make any judgement on it until at least another year, although the engine itself looks fairly impressive. One of those wait n see type things ^

This is really cool. Nice vid OP. I'm not getting all the "not the same game" comments. Ofcourse it's not the same. The take away is the sense of scale that they are going for is very similar. The planet atmosphere is created by physical effects like rotation. I love the effect of moving from atmoshpere to space. This is showing that there are others out there with the same ambitions and vision that we all want with Elite. Competition is progress. Looking forward to what Frontier is coming up with.

Hasn't BG&E2 been announced for something like 10 years now? :D

More than that. In fact, there were gameplay videos before it was cancelled like 8 years ago. And it looked much more like 1st game. I don't like direction this is taking now. Looks like they're just following a trend with no regard to what the original game was. Everything has to be space and/or open world these days. I can smell a mile away if a game was conceived via artistic vision or marketing research. Guess which one is it ;)

Football vs. Soccer

Yes it looks intresting and it might be maybe a game from Ubisoft that i will try after years of boycott.
But it will never be comparable to Elite because it already looks right now like a complete different genre ;)

The original game was a story driven puzzler/3rd person combat that was very refreshing when it came out, and still plays well today (completed it again about 3 months ago). While this is more open world than the previous game, I don't see it as being a direct competitor.

Their developer view would do a lot to answer the "sense of scale" and "these ships are too big, stations are too small" kinds of discussions I've seen in the Elite universe.

It's Ubi, so it will be open world liberate-the-towers, but the teaser looked like a pretty funny setting at least.

OP with all due respect .... stop monkeying around with us. There is no comparison between the two games. So I am guessing your talking about the games engine capabilities. There, you may have a point. But then I do not know the capabilities of the engine that ED is built on either. And just for the conversation I doubt that Frontier would develope their game without a thought towards possibly changing engines some where down the road (if they needed to).

No ...

It will be another game based on the space genre that will be sufficiently different from the rest. SC is different to ED, ED is different to NMS and so on, they can all peacefully co-exist.

BGE2 will be gloriously different so it wont be a competitor.

True the 'tech' of ED, or rather the Cobra engine doesn't compare to CryEngine or this custom based engine, but then the system requirements for CryEngine are massive and Ubisoft have a lot more money to throw around than Frontier do. But then I forget you are not allowed to like all things these days, it has to be one or the other.
