Ring systems are too big (analysis and solutions) (x-posted to Bugs forum)

I oppose this purely on the basis that it would prevent stupidly cool things like giant rings and worlds like Mitterand Hollow. Sometimes, I don't want science, I want cool . This is one of those times.

It doesn't "prevent" anything. It limits them to very young systems where they're a lot more reasonable.

But I've realised that there's so much unrealistic stuff in ED that I don't even know why FDev pretend that it's even trying to be realistic. Or why I even bother writing stuff like this.

I only just saw this thread. I'll add my $0.02 and say that I appreciate what you did here. You laid out a really solid argument, backed up with math, coming from the currently known processes that govern these systems. I'm actually amazed that people argued with you so much over it. I thought your post was well thought out, and well presented.

EDIT: I had noticed that some of the rings looked too large, but didn't try to do any math to prove it. Sometimes there are orbiting bodies that appear to be well within the Roche Limit too, so I think they have problems in both directions. But again, I didn't check the math on any of them, it's just an observation, by eyeballing it.

I love huge ring systems!
Why does Stellar Forge create systems with huge rings?
Because they look nice. What the OP calls an accretion disc could also be called a protoplanetary disc in the case of dwarf stars.

yeah its a weird hill to die on.
I like them too, I like some glitches that make exploration interesting because they go against the expected.
I mean.. yeah fix it if its easily fixable and doenst over the stelar force, but I think this is something that should be pretty low priority because it negatively impact very few people and has even some positive impact on most.

elide dangerous is a simulation but its not the realistic galaxy simulation, so ikd.. expect that is nice and well but maybe a bit too much?

It's a game, it's not perfect, and reforging the galaxy is out of the question.

Very, very interesting and well written waste of your time.

And don't take that as derogatory.

There are plenty of ways to build a sentence and not come off as derogatory. Had you accomplished that feat you wouldn't have to put in a disclaimer in the end either.

And yet I didn't, because I wrote what I intended and not what you want to hear. One is always going to offend others at some points in their life anyway :D

I value OP's time and highly interesting information. It won't change anything, but it's good to read.

Don't worry, give it a few weeks and you too will become one with the angst (y)

As the OP, I didn't take offence :).

It's sad because I wonder what else they can't fix. The lighting in the game has been a huge bugbear of mine for example, and they've shown no movement in fixing it despite multiple complaints about it. What irks me is that when they're reported as bugs they just give the standard "thanks for the report, we've passed it on" reply and don't say anything about how they can't fix it, or if there are any workarounds.
