One problem with the upcoming hull repair limpets

Yes, they are great for explorers. The almost self-contained ship where only the powerplant can ever break down is coming closer. Except that this rules out a lot of ships for exploration, simply because they don't have the internals.

ADS, DSS and scoop are the bare minimum requirements for any exploration ship. Add 1 or (if they should also be able to repair each other) 2 AFMUs. Add hull repair limpet controller and a cargo rack to hold the limpets. Now add an SRV hangar to be able to collect the synthesis materials out in the black and some shielding for the outbound and inbound voyages.

That's 8-9 internal slots for the explorer that can do it all. So are we ever only going to explore in Anacondas now ? Please FD, with that new addition combine ADS and DSS into one and change it from internal to utility.

As I said in the Xbox forum, small ships being forgot about again... so much for the short lived DBx and scout.... disappointing if they do forget about small ships AGAIN but I hope they learn

that said you don't need to repair your hull for exploration I just did beagle and back on 100%I just hope small ships still are viable thargoid module wise not just limpets and other nonsense

I think a new dedicated explorer vessel would solve the problem neatly too. 9 internals, 4/4 hardpoints/utility, nice cockpit view and good supercruise maneuverability, light weight, large tank. Wyvern Explorer or Turner class maybe ?

Isnt it much easier to just not take so much hulldamage? This isnt a "must have", its a "nice to have" for those that can.

I think the way they'll actually be used, mostly, is in a wing against Thargoids.

With the up and coming hostility and the devs already saying that the Thargoids are going to overpower us, to mount successful attacks we'll have to use them like you would any team healing ability in a MMO. Yep, I agree that there's going to be a downside, that is it's one more module slot to use, and we all suffer that issue but it's not explorer specific - anyone who chooses to be a healer in the wing, for example, will have to sacrifice something to do so.

There was a pre-launch player initiative that captured the imagination of many... the First Great Expedition.

Much theory-crafting went on, with players hoping for a collective playstyle that required cooperative effort. Some ships would be good at X, others at Y, with a large back-end effort supporting the forward explorers.

There was an assumption that no single ship could singlehandedly "explore" in an effective manner.

Many things didn't work out as expected on release day, what with there being no "known vs. unknown" hyperspace routes (or indeed star systems), no refuelling mechanics, and the mighty Anaconda, that could take everything and the kitchen sink out with it.

But in my book, anyway, the idea that pilots in deep space might need other pilots in order to survive and do well is a big plus, not a negative.

Players don't need other players to repair them out there, but it's a good idea to let players do so if they wish. The difference would be whether players are forced to cooperate or if they can cooperate. One of the chief design decisions of Elite was part of the "Blaze your own trail" slogan: players can do anything alone if they wish to. That doesn't mean that cooperation might not benefit them, just that there are no "wings only" activities. (For example, like raids in MMORPGs.) Personally, I think that staying true to that and adding more ways for people to cooperate (and benefit from it) is the best approach.

I'm aboiut 30~35kly travel in my circumnavigation and still at 100% hull. No need for repair if you're careful.

I think the problem with these limpets is that FDev tries to sell them as the big improvement of exploration in 2.4, I am afraid...

Where did you get that impression?

What I heard was from FDevs: "We got something for the explorers."
What sounded like 15 guys to say: "Wow!"
And FDevs to say: "Limpets, folks."

Never heard anything about a big improvement to exploration, to be fair.

you already mentioned it, the only things needed for exploration are an ADS, DDS, and fuel scoop. That's three internals used...plenty of room for any additions based on what you want. I've been flying just fine for nearly 2 years....just made a plus 20,000 jump journey without a fuel scoop or afmu. This doesnt limit exploration to just an anaconda...it's just another feature that has many benefits for all uses of builds. ...the problem is you've got it in your mind that you need to have every type of module in your ship so it becomes a problem adding one module to the list....there are plenty of ships great for exploration...thanks to engineers almost every ship can get a good jump range.though i do admit anything over 25ly jump range is just fine for jumping. a 50-60 ly jump range will get you there quicker but isnt needed unless your traveling along the fringe of the galaxy, but doing a journey like that will limit you to what ship to use. Think outside the box, learn how to fly, and learn you cant have everything you want so learn how to make builds that dont require everything. Honestly a hull repair limpet slot on an exploration ship seems like a waste of a slot, spend enough time out in the black and you learn how not to fly into objects and check gravity before you make a landing.

With that said though, i dont think ADS and DSS should be combined, but it would make sense to have them as Utility slots over optional internals so on that part alone i agree with. Just make sense to have scanners to be like that in the first place.

Yup!
I don't take AFMUs, heatsinks and probably won't take limpets.(Asp Exp)
Scoop, SRV, Shields,ADS and DS is all I need

Well, I accidentally hit boost, this evening, while looking at the ground and did a major face plant. I then did a 1200 ly run back to Colonia before my ship fell apart around my ears.

Some of us are just too stupid to risk going out without a repair kit :-/
