24 hours? I'm guessing you were upgrading some old mainframes, like 360, 370 and the likes? I was talking about upgrading Sun servers, packed with 18 cores, 24GB of RAMs, about 10 years ago...
I remember some databases I worked on about 15 years ago. We had at that time quite large data (this company was the third largest in the industry of its kind), millions and millions of records, in many different tables. Relational data and so forth. Doing an update of adding a column or just fixing a value could take hours. We had a statistical system that ran each night to update the latest data, it took about 6-7 hours to run, hence the nightly run. It was a pain when something went wrong and it had to be re-run. Bleh.

Today, with server clustering and SSDs, these things won't take that long, but then, now (like Elite) you probably have billions of records instead. After all, the galaxy in Elite has some 400 billions stars. What if there's an update to the star-planet tables, adding a column for instance. Urgh. Scary if something crashes.

Q : If we leave launcher open, when all is good , will PLAY change to UPGRADE or do we have to relaunch launcher ?

I'll bet that just taking the initial backup take a fair chunk of time, let alone running the update scripts.

The launcher shows the current server status as OK. While I'm sure they are ok, it would be more helpful if the launcher indicated whether the servers were available to players! Especially as it is still possible to launch the game.

The message we're getting implies it does.

The message is about the game client being the wrong version ... the launcher does what it say... launches the game client and it is also capable of upgrading the client when required. A launcher update would be required to disable that play button though when the game clearly isn't playable.

It would have been practical ...

.. with an option to download the new client in advance. Now, after the patch, once it is release, the Internet is going to break.

I think a relaunch will be necessary. Another option could be to hit F5 (refresh), but i'm not so sure this will change the button to "Upgrade"...
