OMG - my first 4 hours ever of ED - im shattered!

look at the controls. you can rebind them. then play the first and second tutorial and look what which button does.
fr combinations like (x)+[button] you can also press down the button, after a short while a pop up with all possible combinations will come up.

I for example changed the UIs- so that the touchpad upper left ->comms panel, lower left is the nav panel with acess to system and galaxy map and contacts. upper right is modules etc and lower right is the role panel.

then I changed for example that x (choose target) if I hold it pressed I can circle the firegroups with the shoulder buttons, bircle the ships with the directional buttons..

just look through the bindings, identify which does what and look whether its nice for you-if not change it.

It took a while for me for example to get that you can change the level in galaxy map (z axis) by pressing the square button in the map which then changes the function of one of the joysticks..

just go iti a trainings mission and play around- like take the SRV one, there you have a ship and an srv and you can just play around with it and get used to it

I consider myself a mature gamer, ie not a run and gun at 500mph type. Games like ED should be perfect for me. Its quite slow paced (but captivating) and I feel its quite a ‘mature’ game. My 12 yr old will hate it thank god.

But the problem I have, (and I admit this is my lack of experience with the game) is the ultra steep learning curve.

I had my first 4 hours with it last night and did the training missions (bar the expert combat one). I found the training missions to be general guidance rather than informative. I was often left wondering what the heck im supposed to be doing and how to do it. This meant constant ‘restarting’ until I realised theres a comms panel which has all the last talk in it. Same with trade missions, I had to go through every button and combination I could find to see where im meant to be going etc

That aside, my biggest issue if landing/docking the blooming thing. I have all the assists off and im like a learner driver trying to parallel park. Once ive actually managed to find the station im supposed to be at (no mean feat!) its purely down to luck whether I can get through the letter box or look like a drunken idiot bashing into the sides.

Landing on a pad is equally as bad. Ive got the cross hairs thing down good now but im often rotated at 45 deg. Is there a rotate control (ie spin on the horizontal). I end up rolling or yawing, crash into the sides, hit r1 by accident and plough into the side of a tower or something.

Ive found myself trapped inside landing cages like a sprat flapping aimlessly in a fishing net, ive found myself wedged ‘under’, yes UNDER the side of a landing platform and I just pray to god other players aren’t watching my attempts as its cringe worthy.

Im going to spend a hour or two watching You tube vids to see if it answers my questions.

My final issue is when I space (I cant hit anything there). Theres so many boxes and triangles on the map that I struggle to find where im meant to be heading. Ive resorted to ignoring the map and spinning my ship around and hovering the cross hair over anything that pops up to see if it’s the right one.

Oh… and last night I did a basic mission to collect some grain. During an FSD thingy, I overheated for some reason, almost blew my ship up and when I eventually docked at retrun station (after 20 minutes trying to land on a pad) I find my grain cargo is missing. I assume frazzled in my bizzare overheating moment.

I fear 99% of this is down to my incompetence but boys it’s a hard game to get good at

Add a few years, the learning curve is even larger. I spent 5 hours trying to get out of supercruise correctly. Once I did, spent an hour trying to find the dam mail slot, one I did geting in was a piece of cake, but I spent an hour attempting to dock, relized my landing gear wasn't down. Quit for the day. Apparently one cannot die in or during the lessons. Because, at one point I got caught up in some antenas or something on the outside of station, it took 20 minutes for me to free myself.

It's great to read stuff like this -- new players just getting into the game, it's very exciting.

Yes, ED has a steep learning curve. Yes, it's worth it! Don't give up, it takes time. And there is NO RUSH, no end-game, nothing to drive you forward except your own desires and needs.

So take your time, and enjoy the process. You'll never get to do it again. I started a new commander and video'd the process to help newcomers (link below ) but it wasn't the same as starting the first time. I knew too much :)

Enjoy and welcome to the game!

I'm gonna repeat what's already been said but Flight Assist should only be turned off for combat. There are literally no good reason to turn it off outside of some very specific scenarios (mostly combat).

It's nothing like e.g. stability control in racing games, which is basically just a safety mechanism you can disable if you wish to push your car beyond limits. The ships are almost unflyable with FA OFF, and that is not an exaggeration.

Yes, something to watch while im at work :) Thanks mate o7

I've been bimbling around on and off since the midnight launch. Having such fun and I'm enjoying my muppetry in regard to my inept flight skills. Much bouncing off things. I'm starting to get the hang of landing/docking. I'm in no hurry to earn, get a 'better' ship, etc. The enjoyment of playing Elite again after so many years is very fulfilling. I could potter about in my goldwinder forever (but I shan't, of course). The only thing that's worrying me right now is that I've spent around 15 hours in the game and haven't blown up once. Am I doing something wrong?

I think one thing missed here in this thread is what Flight Assit (OFF) is used for.

As said before Flight assit (ON) is used by 99.999999% of the commanders.

Flight Assit (OFF) is used mostly in fighting! It allows the ship to avoid corrections and inertail changes in ships directions. With flight assit off you can reduce thrust to your engines in a dog fight and do a 180 while continuing at your current speed and direction.. and then boost at your opponent without making a wide turn. There are alot of tricks that can be done in combat with flight assit off.

PRo PvP Players usualy have this hotkeyed some how to quickly toggle between assited and not.

For every day traders (on) ..

Nope, you're doing it right! Take your time, do your own thing, follow your own path. That's what the game is for :)

I felt completely clueless in the beginning.
Three years later I've been all over the galaxy, have an elite rank, the best ships and a billion bucks.......... And I still feel clueless lol

Welcome! If you played your first night with FA off, I feel the force is strong in you :)

As you can see, OP, you're not alone. Soon all that will be easy. I'd recommend taking a look in the settings and checking out all of the available commands at your disposal.

I was so glad to get a docking computer spent ages bouncing about the landing pad like a drunken kangaroo till it engaged. But boy what a game!

Hello all, i have a question:

How i can take cargo released by other ships? (I cant find this command on my dualshock)

ohoh.... I can answer this one lol as I had the same thing.

Open the scoop (same one as you did for mining training). treat it exactly like mining rocks.

<looks around for my first 'helpful' badge>

Go to Functions in the right hand panel (lower right of the dualshock's pad takes you there) and enable the cargo scoop.

A crosshair display then comes up in your cockpit. Target whatever you want to pick up and maneuver until it is centered in the crosshair. Then move forwards slowly until you scoop it up into your hold.

I feel with you, it's similar for me.

I've decided to use flight assist at least until I have a good knowledge of the other aspects of the game (so eventually I'll use it forever :p).
I have flight assist on all the time and I've been playing since P Beta. The only time I use FA off is in combat to turn quickly then I put it back on. The other only time I use it. ;) Is when landing on a high G planet. On those planets, never vertical thrust down [Boom] blip the FA off and on to lower yourself safely.

I started creating a sheet where I put all the hints that I got from researching (probably at least 50% of my gaming time is reading stuff in forums etc). I'll share it later, perhaps it's useful for others as well.

That will be useful I am sure. I keep my early one on a s/sheet and get nostalgic when I look at it. :)

To OP. Take all the help you can get. This game has one heck of a learning curve.

...I have all the assists off...

4 hours in, and he considers himself Isinona... ;) (look it up)

But yes, the learning curve is quite cruel. When you can take off and dock safely, then head into the main game. Find a system you like. Check the missions board and start stacking som reputation in that system (better missions, better pay).

Oh, and take your time. There is no rush, and there is no end game. :)
