One problem with the upcoming hull repair limpets

Sadly, I personally don't really see much appeal in the Cobra Mk. IV beyond maybe using it as an ironic tank of sorts. But of course, to each their own.

Mine is an armoured bomber. Its fun to watch 5 mines drop on ground targets. Intentionally added some mods that add jitter, so they spread out a bit on launching as well.

Sorry for being OT, but just curious ... does the weapon slot placement allow for all five simulanteously, or dou you have to point down like when using mines in an Asp (so you don't blow yourself up)?

Than....take the Python? She is a great explorer since FSD upgrades :D
But cockpit gets boring, at least for me. Trade? Python! Missioning? Python! Combat? Python! Mining? Python! Exploring? Python!
We need more variete here! [haha]

Right, that's why I said "with a Lakon-style cockpit." Plus, as a dedicated explorer, I would want a better jump range. It's those two factors that keep me from exploring in a Python. ;)

With that said though, i dont think ADS and DSS should be combined, but it would make sense to have them as Utility slots over optional internals so on that part alone i agree with. Just make sense to have scanners to be like that in the first place.

Personally I had been hoping for an advanced, combined unit, but now I think I agree. Utility versions would be much better. I don't understand why they're internals instead of utility slot devices to begin with. But since we already have the internal versions, it would be great if they added utility versions, and leave it up to the player to decide which to use. Even if the utility versions end up costing more, I would gladly sacrifice a couple of heat sink launchers to slot them there.

Good point OP. I hope that FD will take this under consideration. I like the idea of moving the scanners in to utility slots. There is nothing useful for an explorer other than heat sink launchers ofc in the utility slots anyway.

I don't think the new limpets are a must for the explorer, but I would like to call "repair rat" when they are available because a bad landing dropped my hull to 65% and I still need to land a lot of times (once every couple of days to get more jumponium mats).

That won't happen though unless they give everyone extra utility slots to fit them. Too many other ships out there exploring, or whatever that have them full already, I would think. Most all of my ships have shield boosters loaded up on them, even my long distance Cobra.

I really don't see that happening. Realistically, I think an extra exploration specific module slot is the most viable option, as I mentioned. This would free up another module slot on exploration ships to be used for whatever a player wanted, including a scanner, if that's what they wanted, since they'll fit in any size.

Yes, I think this may very well be a new standard for them, or an additional option when doing rescues. Very cool to see that extra element of gameplay added. Well done, I say.

Actually I think FD might like the idea of making them utilities to combat the all boosters meta. And I would indeed be in a little pinch. So far all my ships carry an ADS on the smallest slot to give a general idea of what's in systems I come through. On utility slots I might have to rethink that.

We, the Fuel Rats, are already considering* extending our services ... comes somehow naturally to us, does it. And Space Rodents seldom can stand idle in the light of such a tasty challenge. Can't speak for the collective but I feel an itching in my whiskers.

*) As in: no decision reached yet. May or may not. But I am quite sure which it will be ... ^,^/

Might not be a bad idea, since we can often help out as escorts or guards during expeditions. On the other hand, that might encourage another element to get involved. It seems most group expeditions are formed in private groups anyway.

Still, it might be interesting for posterity and to show others that there are other ways to play this game while efficiently going exploring as well. I very much enjoy playing the game as a survivalist, and to me the biggest risks are other players followed by NPCs. It's a mad galaxy, it seems, and one has to learn how to protect themselves.

Of the five times I've lost a ship in this game, I've never lost a ship while out exploring; not even close, with the lowest being 96% hull on my first real expedition, which was out to Sgr A back in 3301. Three were PVP related, one was related to station security, and one was getting board farming NPCs – thankfully I've avoided being that sort of meta gamer since then; it really didn't suit me anyway.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Some decent fighters able to go out and help out an explorer who:
Plays in open (RP purposes?) and gets jumped by a troll
Is brand new to it and doesn't realize it's not as safe in open
Gets torn up by Thargoids (if they exist outside the bubble, that remains to be seen)

They would very likely then have to be extra utility slots above what we have now, and then likely be made scanner specific, otherwise people could just use more shield boosters, or whatever, changing ship balance even more.

That doesn't seem very likely nor ideal to me. But who knows? Maybe that's what they'll do.

...

To be clear, they aren't going to take away utility mounts that people already have and they aren't going to take away scanners people already have either, so this leaves some rather limited options for adding them in as utility modules.

Diminishing returns after 4 shield boosters was what was planned or at least suggested by Frontier, but even that the space cow tank sorts were having a fit over and Frontier seemed to back off from the idea, unfortunately. Removing them outright would be both overreaching and comical to see the ramifications from on the forum.

Many of the smaller and mid-sized ships only have 4 utility slots total, which is a more significant portion for these ships, so their effectiveness isn't likely to be meddled with.

What you seem to be suggesting could have been done much earlier in development before the game's release, but it isn't a viable solution now. I don't even really see much point in discussing it other than to save people from digging holes to nowhere and getting worked up over it.

I still like the idea of adding utlity-slot versions of the scanners, in addition to the ones we have now, so the player can choose where to slot them.

My fear is that it would turn into more of a PVP-centric group, and I'm not into that sort of meta gameplay, though I do like that it can be a part of the game. At heart I'm still an explorer in the game, it just makes sense for me to use a combat capable ship, since it's a viable option.

It's a bit off topic here either way. Feel free to start up a thread about combat capable exploration, or if you don't maybe I will.

Cheers. :)

...

FYI: I no longer use the in-game friends list so as to avoid some shenanigans. Nothing personal.

I've been flying just fine for nearly 2 years....just made a plus 20,000 jump journey without a fuel scoop or afmu.

Err...typo or confied to the bubble?

Yup!
I don't take AFMUs, heatsinks and probably won't take limpets.(Asp Exp)
Scoop, SRV, Shields,ADS and DS is all I need

Everyone's idea of "exploration" and ideal loadout is different, and as had been stated, the only real requirements are a scanner and fuel scoop, although one could find plenty to explore within the bubble and likely not need a fuel scoop.

I made my first voyages in my Asp Explorer, but have recently switched to the Anaconda and will likely not go back. I don't use any of the extra slots though, aside from one for the SLF (SLF + Rocky Ice World + Low Grav = fun!). I like the big fuel scoop, heat management and FSD that it offers.

I did take heat sinks on my current voyage, but I do not bother with shields. I land often, and recently hit something while landing and dropped hull to 79%, but still not sure that I would take repair limpets or not. I'll just have to see what the weight gain is.

Which is why I said "I don't take..." and not "You shouldn't take..." ;)
