Newcomer / Intro Iron Man

I remember when the kick starter for ED was ongoing Frontier talked about Iron Man mode, loosing your character if you die and your escape pod gets destroyed. I know that it will be a long time before anything like this is possible but while I was playing today, I had a great ideal for Iron man mode…. When you guys can get around to it.

The escape pod contains an extremely small FSD drive and little else. This mini FSD needs to be inactive while in the ship due to the fact that it would explode if impacted, the same reason it only has %1 hall. The initiation process start upon ejection but takes five minutes to fully activate. This “Unfortunately” gives another Commander a chance to shoot it or scoop it up into the cargo hold.

Just delete save when ship is destroyed . Simple.

Proud Ironman (no claims) player here, I just clear save when I die...

...going strong this round.

Do we really want to make ED a shooter game only? Surely there must be more suitable games for this?

Don't get me wrong, i am not denying you stuff you like, but is that really in the heart of the game. Surely open play will provide enough challenge if you want to die?

Combat is just one way to die in ED, gravity has been my arch enemy on several occasions...

Takes me half a day to recover when I die in this game, it's like losing a really huge bet in poker. Stomach churning...

Plenty of ways to die out in the deep black, popping up in between two hot suns would be a rush.

Not to mention a separate server for Iron Man commanders would be an option and a sure way to weed out the fake Iron Men.

Howdy! A number of people feel the same as you, though different people have different thoughts on how much risk/punishment goes into their idea of an Iron Man mode.

So I created a relatively popular ejection table to help get across some degree of risk in ship destruction, where the risks can be adjusted based on what you personally are looking for. Check this out:

Hopefully you'll find it adds a little thrill to your game.

It's not about wanting to die - it's about NOT wanting to die, and the excitement you get by surviving. The problem is, it's all too easy to look at ship destruction in ED as consequence free (especially if you have a big bank account), and respawning becomes like Call of Duty. Some people want an incentive to act as if their life matters, and a reason to want to flee rather than take a chance at surviving a very risky encounter.

Ironman completes the whole Elite Dangerous package for me as a player. FD created an amazing flight sim with realistic controls along with a very brutal crime and punishment system, some even call it another job. Playing dead is dead just extends that realism for me, I get my kicks from NOT taking stupid risks with my ship and being much more careful in combat.

The game lacks content in a number of areas so finding something that floats your boat is useful. :)

Right on, man, Right on.

I salute your masochistic nature in going full ultra-ironman, but I bet you can understand why the pilot ejection table works for some of us who aren't quite that extreme. (after all, having the chance to escape via escape pod was just as much a part of the older Elite games as the idea of permadeath)

I read your PET some time ago actually Mossfoot, had all the intention of giving it a go but I just can't get past that 1 claim showing up in my stats....it just burns at me every time. :)

I'm avoiding ALL planetary landings at the moment due to these death-skimmers that have been falling from the skies and insta-killing ships! :-(

Ok, but that's more a case of bad luck. With taking risk I had PVP in mind and so far I only recall one pilot that actually was (still is?) crazy enough doing that. Too long ago to find his post though, I'm afraid we just have to trust my rusty memories.

Unikorn I think?!
Pretty sure he plays a 'dead is dead/pvp' pirate role in his Cobra3.

If I had a second commander I might play iron man but not on my main commander as it has just taken too long to get where I am and I still can not afford to fully kit out my fleet. Although Iron man with an escape pod purchasable module, like the original sounds, more attractive than full dead is dead mode to me. Would have to be played in either group or solo for me though as the impact of griefers would be horrendous in such a game mode.

I like that table Mossfoot, they should incorporate it into the Iron Man dynamics.
I can also see that in order for Iron Man mode to be a possibility, a huge re-structure of the game would be needed... it would take years.
Perhaps it could be made just in time to compete with another space simulator (not naming names) that has the ideal of damage to a character every time it died and even permadeath after so many deaths. Only to be replaced with that would result in another character to be made, with the looks of the original and background as being the child or relative of said character.

However it turns out working for ED, I would like a Iron Man mode that also allows a secondary Commander and wide-spread fame for the Iron Man Commander that holds the record for kills, exploration or bank account, something like seeing the commander name listed on Galnet :)

Thanks. I don't think they'll ever have an IronMan mode, though I'd be pleased if they ever had an optional choice to roll on a version of the IronMan table on the rebuy screen ;)

I run my alt as ironman with your PET system Mossfoot. It's been a lot of fun, on my 3rd life so far. Each one has been a good story and it really adds to the enjoyment. The early game in Elite has always been my favorite time, the game is well paced and there are lots of choices. Thanks again for making the table :)
