To Cutter, or not to Cutter... finally reached Duke, do I care?

Commanders,

Good day to you all, and I hope it has been a wonderful day of space travel.

Riddle me this. I have FINALLY reached Empire rank of Duke. Yippie! It only took forever, minus a day. Now that I have the ability, I am considering purchasing the Imperial Cutter. Firstly, I have to mention that I am absolutely in love with my Anaconda, and still feel it to be the best all around ship for us all, but I am open to enlightenment.

So far, the only things that I like about the Cutter are the fact that: 1. it can haul so much cargo (Weird to be so. Shouldn't that credit go to a transport ship, but alas...) 2. It looks perrrty (sort of), and 3. It has pretty strong shields.

Now, with the grind of Elite in regards to earning credits for purchases and materials for upgrades, I am stuck on whether or not I want to purchase this big bird.

Would any of you that have made the leap care to share your insight? I am having buyers-doubt, and I don't really want that to morph into buyers-remorse.

Thank you,
Confused in Cali

I am the proud owner of a Chrome Paint Job for the Cutter ..... but I don't own the Cutter as I'm nowhere close to achieving one (yet).

But I do take one out for a spin every time there is a Beta, just to look at the gorgeous chrome [heart]

I have been grinding to become Duke (almost there) for the Cutter and tis good to read mostly positive responses in this thread

I can fly any ship in the game and do fly almost every ship in the game at various times.

An engineered Cutter is on my short list of favorite ships for sure.

I have two.

My Engineered Battle Cutter:
The good:
- Boosts at 434 kps.
- Has ~3300 strength shield in shields and boosters.
- Has ~ 1600 strength in armor.
- Has over 49 Megawatts of usable power.
- Jumps up to 25 light years at a time.
- Melts small and medium ships in its path with one huge and two large efficient beams which will run nearly all the time.
- Explodes what it doesn't quickly melt with four high capacity guided missile racks.
- Has room for SRVs and SLFs at the same time.
- Can run down almost any NPC with one boost and one pip to engines.
The bad:
- Has a weaker distributor than I'd like but I've engineered it well to compensate for the most part.
- Turns like an elephant on ice, as one person said, but the grade 5 engines and managing flight assist helps a lot.

For PvE I prefer it to my Corvette but when I PvP, I prefer various other ships depending on what I'd doing.

My partially engineered hauling Cutter:
- Has a ~30 LY jump range.
- Boosts at ~400 kph (better in the future) so will get away from anything which could hurt it execept maybe Thargoids.
- Carries 712 to 728 tons of cargo depending on my configuration. I never fly without shields.
- Is the best hauler in the game bar none.

I like all the ships in ED but the Cutter is in my top 5.

The Cutter is an elegant and versatile ship. Even well armed and tanked, it's much faster and far more durable than the next closest ship, which is a shieldless TradeConda while still having the same or better cargo capacity.

I dunno.

I used to adore the Cutter. It was my goal from the very beginning to own this ship, and it took me quite a while to finally get there.
But, while it's fun to fly insane amounts of cargo around very fast indeed, It's as responsive as oil-tanker at sea. And I quite like ships that actually turn before you get bored of the destination.
I decided for balance, I needed to try the Corvette, after all, it's a fine looking ship but with a horrendous FSD range. So I grinded and finally got it last month.
OMG. This ship makes a Cutter feel like it has no controls. It's basically a larger Conda, with 2 huge guns. Sure, the jump rage sucks, but I engineered it to be 21ly, and I've been jumping all over the place finding alien sites with no sector locking at all.

IMO, the Cutter is simply TOO slow to be fair. Given it's size and design, turning on a dime wouldn't be 'right' - but I think I would like to see it's pitch and yaw speed increased by 50%. That isn't going to be faster than a Conda, but it would make it a little more bearable and useful as the multipurpose ship it was supposed to be.

Somehow, relegating the Cutter to the role of cargo-hauler with bling, isn't what the Empire had in mind when they commissioned its development. Combat in a Cutter is quite frustrating. My Vette is such a good ship, I'm considering doing everything I can to encourage RNGesus to provide me with a FSD Godroll so I can perhaps coerce another 5 ly :D

Big, small, I've flown them all.
I own them all.
The Cutter is a fun ship, though it handles like a block of soap on ice.
But outfitted right you can park it in a CZ and clean house.
Or you can strip it bare and turn it into a huge freighter with a paper-mache hull.
Or you can split the difference and make a really good general use ship of it.

Or, do what I'll do with mine - take it on a tour of the galaxy's perimeter for 18 months or so.

I had originally planned on owning only one cutter but I'm leaning towards a second now. Feels wrong to have that 200million prismatic shield with all those heavy rolls sitting in storage

I've owned a cutter for some time now, and here are some things I've learned:

A-grading can cost 600M+ credits, even with discounts, so be prepared for some more grinding if that's what you're aiming for. If you want to trade, it's the best ship for the part by far. it's really easy to boost shields to some high levels (even class 6 shields), and when combined with fast boost speed ensures you'll survive long enough to escape pretty much every NPC interdiction. I managed to keep 760T while having over 1,000MJ shielding. The low pitch rate doesn't matter if you aren't turning to shoot anything, and the jump range is decent and gives you access to plenty of routes. The cutter can also function as a support vessel in wing combat when equipped with mostly turreted weapons, though I would strongly advise against solo bounty hunting in it. One last tip: don't expect auto-docking to work every time!

Hope this helped!

Hi,

This isn't a question. It's a statement. To wit, yes, yes you do. Absolutely.

Glad to be of help.

~kof.

PS: people complain about it's handling just don't know what they're doing; FA-Off it's insane, with Engineering it's downright terrifying to fly (in about every awesome way possible). ;)

I've found the cutter to be an excellent mining ship, huge cargo space and 12 collectors. Crunches them rocks good and quick.

Less useful now that the bgs influence effect of mined commodities was reduced.

You will need G5 modded thrusters and fsd.

I have a vette which is solely combat based and G5'd A rated all the way but that's all its good for..... my cutters primary roll for my fleet is trading @728t, its a mostly D rated build with G5 engineering and can Jump 33ly, im a big fan and that cockpit in VR.... sploosh!!! but it will also play a combat role and i want a combat cutter so i'll be investing in a second one:)

I haven't yet but imagine that G5 Dirty Drives are going to be a requirement

My Cutter has financed the rest of my fleet by itself. I'd sell every other ship I own before I sold it. Rules CGs. Makes millions in a single trade trip.. If you aren't a billionaire, you will be shortly flying one.

'Nuff said.

Found some arsenic the other day (Deciat 1) and Abnormal Compact Emissions Data last night so will be treating the good ship "Plasma" to both of these modifications tonight. :)

Hope the Cutter is going to be cool as I am currently trying my hand at grinding Imperial rank and I hate rank grinding.
We'll see how long I last.

Grinding Empire rank was the first thing i did after downloading the game took me aprox 7days play time to get the rank. As the Cutter was the only ship i realy wanted as it ticked all my required boxes & i wouldnt look back

P.S. i Feel Dirty when i have to fly any other ship even the other Gutamaya ships apart from the GU-97 SLF

You are now in a position to buy the Cutter for trading and earn enough credits to buy another Conda, and ALL other ships again, and again, and again in no time at all.

Well done, have fun and enjoy the benefits.

Depends what you want to use it for... Given the top 3..

Combat = Corvette
Trading = Cutter
Exploration = Anaconda
Basking = Cutter

I originally bought mine for combat, but it turns so sloooooowwwww and I near broke my x52 trying to get it to turn, so I went back and sold it and rebuilt my conda. Then I Fed Ranked and got the Vette. Haven't looked back. Combat wise, the vette is best of the best.

Except.. The cutter (for me) is the nicest looking ship in the game. And the view from the desk is 'feel me basking'.. So.. I bought another, and engineered bits and pieces and brought it to the Barnies to see the aliens. Every time I get on deck I revel (bask) in the view.

So now.. While I have an ASPX/DBX/Conda, the Cutter is my choice for exploration.

All opinions are based on PvE :D

7 days. A chore but doable. I have tried before (both Fed and Imperial) but soon gave up in disgust.
Got a good spot now though!
Thanks for the info Cmdr!

The Cutter is a great ship, and everyone should fly one with engineered thrusters sometime in their elite career. The only downside of the vessel is the limited power distributor.
