Leaving AFAIK is no issue, although you can look around to visually spot Skimmers being properly on the Ground (use external Cam).
Only when being the 1st in an Instance and arriving, they'll start popping down as soon as you approach ~3.5km-4km from the Installation and below some ~2-3km Altitude.

The Client Journal storage location on a Windows machine w/ standard Installation should be here :
C:\Users\{YourUserName}\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous

If you install something like EDDiscovery then it reads your journal log, and you have the ability to see what you've been up to, where you've been, what you've scanned, attacked, traded, etc.etc.

I got round it in the end by hopping in my SRV and driving 7km from the base and calling my ship in. I didn't see any skimmers tho I did have something appear on SRV scanner just as I was boarding. Unfortunately I can't confirm it was skimmers as ship radar doesn't see them.

Dropbears are terrifying.... and apparently Skimmers too now :D

New video:

This was the second time it happened to me, but only one video. I've opened a ticket concerning both incidents and added my information to the main bug report.

Well I guess I have had a lot of close calls then. I have seen the skimmers dropping but I had no idea they could take out a ship. I have even seen ship parts falling around me and assumed there was a collision above, guess some poor NPC must have taken a bullet for me.

These are the same skimmers that die after a few hits from an SRV's pea shooter? Yet if they hit you they are more powerful than any weapon in the game? What a silly game this is.

Hey FDEV, that's one of the reasons your fix for Skimmer ramming was stupid. Please just disable collision damage OR allow us to ram them again...

PS
And fix them spawning 8km above of course!

I've always hated that. "Do it your own way" they say, then rescind by bending the rules of their own game universe.

If they're coming in at the maximum rate of gravity then they're the perfect orbital bombardment tools. It's like the difference between knocking something over into the bathtub and throwing it off a suspension bridge.

Lololololol. So let me get this straight. People were ramming skimmers, so the devs gave skimmers the ability to one-shot cutters?

And now they undetectably spawn 8 km in the air?

Got me just now - scanner clear, under 50m/s, let alone the 100 speed limit as I was just crossing the pad threshold at about 20m AGL, then something hits me out of nowhere and my python kabooms...

And it doesn't stop there, because in addition to my 2.95M rebuy there's a "fines" line item on the insurance and a line for "modules" (wth is this?) - when I had no legacy fines or other items outstanding. I rebuy and total up the fines now in my transactions tab for the failed haulage missions and there's over 600k of them and a "dormant bounty" which I've never had.... For a totally clean cmdr prior to the bug bomb that's "throw the HOTAS" level.... I'm calming down some before I write the ticket, since FD support don't deserve the brunt of my current mood.

Definitely a bug that needs to be fixed.

However, I noticed in both videos that the ships were both speeding when the skimmer hit. I wonder if this wouldn't have been a problem at legal speeds (like suicidewinders).

I know of at least one report of Skimmer death that happened at half the speed limit.

In fact, what's happening is : an innocent free falling skimmer collides with a naughty ship cruising below its trajectory. The skimmer is likely to be destroyed by the impact. Therefore the naughty CMDR of the ship is responsible for having slaughtered an innocent skimmer, and as a guilty CMDR the base defense will enforce the standard punishment for such an offense : death.

BTW any advice on how to mitigate the risk of planetary approach before this is finally corrected ?!

Two things come to mind:
 1. Wait at a high altitiude for all the skimmers to fall before requesting docking.
 2. Land >2km away, go to the base in your SRV. When departing, drive >2km away in your SRV, then summon your ship.

Not tested either as I'm out exploring right now.

Thanks ! As I removed the SRV bay from my current ship, I need to work out the 1st option. From the 2-3 landings I did today, coming in slowly seems to work. Skimmers popped around the base once I closed to 4km. As they are initially patrolling the surroundings of the base, they went quite far from my bow... So I would also add that glide must be exited in order to gain full control of the ship around 8 km away from the base (and not 5 to 6 as I usually do).

Almost happend to me. Thanks to my Vulture and a lucky reflex I dodged it :D
FDev, don't fix plz.
It teaches those lazy DC users some flying x)
