So are the blurry text issues fixed for Vive?

Had a quick scout online but not getting any straight forward answers that way

Is the Vive thing where Elite Dangerous had blurry text on the HUD and in Menus fixed yet?

I borrowed a Vive unit last year and was totally sold on it, except Elite let me down "slightly", when I couldn't read anything. Was happy with all the other visuals with Vive, just that darn text problem.
Looking to buy a Vive, just wanted to know if the problem persists in our game.

Unless they have changed the lenses in the device, then no. (And they havent)
That's at least where the main problem is, getting a perfect fit and ipd adjustment is also crucial, if you are just testing in a demo setting this is often skimped on.
It's as important as getting your seat and mirrors angled correctly when driving.

A little supersampling does wonders, but for the smaller texts you have to look dead on, and for some cases leaning in just a litle increases the available resolution a lot.

A SuperSampling value of at least 1.4 and green-colored HUD goes a long way to sort the issue - I never played on a Rift for comparison, but all text is pretty damn readable on my end.

Oh so it was stemming from the hardware more than the software/game?
Heard somewhere it was an optimisation kind of thing

Oh well

You can certainly clear the text up.

There are limitations with the resolution and being so close to the screens, but I wouldn't describe any of the text as blurry anymore once you've seen to it. It's created with visible pixels, but not blurry.

Like a plasma screen when you get closer to it.

As Herberd said above, change HUD colours, dial in the super sampling and other visual settings and it's as clear as any text in any VR game.

It is, but as others mention, dialling a few settings just right will mitigate the most of it, most importantly being able to run some supersampling, but that might require a lot out of your gpu.
And in the last year a lot of settings that uses to be hidden in cryptic text files etc are open and available to be tweaked.

Just for reference: To make Elite render text the same for a Vive (using as many pixels-), as it does for a Rift without supersampling, you'll want to supersample (HMD Quality) at circa 1.2 (or 1.44 if doing it in SteamVR settings instead, now that that value has changed to be a multiplier of area instead of width and height).

(This is because although the headsets both have 1080x1200 pixel screens, the Vive stretches those over about a 20% more field of view (per eye) than the Rift.)

Should be ok on the GPU front, SLI gtx1080 setup, when i test drove vive i used one card though.

Actually i was surprised how well vr content ran on my second pc which at that time was packing an r9 390, expected that to be a bit choppy but was alright

Thanks for the feedback guys, i picked up a vive (did consider Oculus but really wanted the large room scale from vive). Messed about with supersampling got it looking pretty good.

To be fair, the immersion level just nullifies anything related to the drop in fidelity. Space trucking VR is amazing

Pretty much my thoughts exactly, sure I would like more. But when I'm off the forums and in game, even after a year of vr.
I pretty much feel like this guy.

I have been on this crazy train of pc gaming since the mid 90's.
More will come.

Isn't it?

Park up near something amazing, shut down... get out of your chair and just check space out.

So good

Actually until last night I had only been flying the training sidewinder while I was tweaking the settings etc.

Last night I flew my own ships. The game dropped me back into my Dolphin which I've been using for passenger missions. Holy crap! That is amazing. I knew the ships are big but i didn't appreciate how big. And being able to get up and walk around the cockpit/bridge is awesome.
The view from my ASP in VR, thing of beauty. Also in the asp if i go to the edge of my playspace I'm actually stop on the hull looking into the ship which is cool but a bit weird.... Not as weird as the headless commander maybe

The scale is mind blowing.

I always refer to this image when trying to explain it...

Changed to a Green HUD today and that's really cleaned up the text no end.

Shame i don't do any of my ships in green but, can't have it all!

Blue works well, too. Keep the brightness down a little.

Do you have DrKaiis ED Profiler? Easiest way to try different HUD colours

Heater, thank you so very much for posting these pictures! I got the Oculus recently and got annoyed by the blurry looks in ED. I found quite some info on the internet but most was outdated or mentioned supersampling but not whether to change it in steamvr or ingame and/or using some 3rd party tool and some editing.

Thanks to your screenshots I was finally able to set up the settings exactly like that. Works surprisingly well with just a GTX 770.

Just one more thing: do you have "enable advanced supersample filtering" option checked or unchecked in steamvr?

P.S.: to anyone having similar issues: people recommended to change your HUD to green. I tried the standard color, blue, and green and boy, green does deliver the best result regarding text readability for VR! Check out http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/ for modifying your HUD (quite simple).
