How about having medals in game to promote things we can do?

I think medals/achievements would be a good idea, but only in true Elite style. Medals aren't handed out for every-day tasks, so it makes sense to award them to CMDRs who have done something a bit bigger - like a Sag A* trip.

Yep... Sag A for sure, but there are a few others I think could do as well, Like Colonia and Hutton. Some CGs, for getting in top ten as well.

No medals, please. The premise if this game is "blaze your own trail", and the last thing it needs right now is a bunch of medals, followed shortly by forum and reddit post with optimized instructions on how to get them with minimum effort, and a whole lemming train of people doing the same thing.

How would that stop you ignoring them, and still blazing your own trial?
How does a whole lemming train of people doing the same thing affect you?

Are the threads about people going to Sag A* wrong for the same reason.

What if the medals came with a revamped Miliatry career, if that was still optional, woudl that still stop you from blazing your own trail?

"Elite II: Frontier" medals worked well alongside rank:

Sounds like a good idea to me, and no real down side.

Maybe make them decals instead, or as well, just for fun.

And tbh, if this energises people, even using crib sheets, then that's good for the game.

E.g. I would do the Hutton run if I got a mug decal out of it....

Yay, another 'grind' for people to complain about.

What are you on about? These are just cosmetic acknowledgements for things we already do, in order to mark the occasions. Won't make your ship faster, gain any extra credits, unlock permits or any other advantage.

Yeah, I could dig this idea.
It would essentially be an "achievement" but keeping within the game world/lore. Medals could be awarded by the various super powers for certain actions. Taking part in a war or achieving certain milestones during a CG.

It was more of a jibe at the constant whining about grinding, and believe me people will because they already whine about cosmetic stuff, medals won't be any different.

How about the potential up and coning human vs. Thargoids war? That should be fun on the bus..... personally I couldn't care less one way or the other but the OP has every right to make the suggestion.

Well Elite is really supposed to be a free roam/"sandbox" game. Achievements to guide you to completing set role challenges kinda gets in the way of that.

I'm all for achievements and medals (although as someone mentioned IN game and not steam as many don't use steam). Not sure I understand those against it as it won't affect them.

People have to remember that the developers kind of have to have a hand in their own game development...

Just because a few players want hand-held "tell me what buttons to press" gameplay, it doesn't mean FD should bring ED down to that level. If the developers want un-defined gameplay that's their absolute right.

TL;DR "those against it" include the devs themselves.
