How about having medals in game to promote things we can do?

Nothing wrong with the odd side quest. Besides, that happens already.

Slight difference between achievement and side quest...but hey, all I said was avoid the false advertising ;) Achievements are inherently non-conducive to dynamic/unique playstyles.

In any case, while ED is an awful game for them, if players are that desperate to feel rewarded it should be an entirely optional affair. I can personally imagine nothing more infuriating or immershun killing than some fanfare playing with a pretty achievement drop down appearing because I managed to shoot a half decent enemy...

I'm confused, you advocate blazing your own trail, then state achievements would contribute to this.

If you like the pat on the head that's 100% okay by me, but don't promote achievement tick boxes as conducive to dynamic play. By direct nature they encourage players to do the same thing, because completing those things is how achievements are earned.

What I have in mind, is more a "Medal" for getting into the top 10 Commanders during a CG or the likes. Something unique to that specific CG. Not a system like what PlayStation and Xbox use.
If implemented properly (I know...) it could be an asset. You're in the list of the top 10 and you get an e-mail from the Pilots Federation with a commendation and a medal is attributed to a page in your Stats in your ships computer.

Not sure about being rewarded. Rather some of these would make good in game memorabilia.

I think this is a bit different from the OP proposal, but this kind of "achievement" I would actually sooner call a "trophy", and am 100% behind it.

I remember reading on the initial PvP league proposal, and the reward being a unique decal and bobblehead you can only get by championing it. This is absolutely unobjectionable - and while not necessarily essential to blazing your own way, I'm not one of the "but we must be equal!" chaps that would be annoyed because someone worked their backside off to the in the top ten of all ED players at something. Hell, give that man several trophies.

So yeah, in terms of "trophies for the best" or "trophies for incredible achievements" or whatever - that's wicked. Recognise those that deserve recognition with a badge they can sport years down the line.

But that's a far cry from a warm pop-up message because you hit Sag A*, like thousands of CMDRs before you, and to follow you.

I'd be okay with this as long as these 'medals' actually had work and achievements behind them. Far too many games these days give you achievements for trivial nonsense like opening your inventory, visiting an auction house, drawing your weapon or sneezing, does my nut in!

I approve this suggestion. After all if it works for the North Korean Army in terms positive reinforcement value, how can it not work for Elite Dangerous?

Some third party sites do that. I know of ED-board which has achievements in it - if you create a profile and keep it up to date by dropping your journal files every so often.
Nice feature.

Blazing your own trail sometimes means getting to have actual blazes along that trail. That's how I see these, as trail markers. I wouldn't care about getting everything so much as I would want there to be enough markers that the ones I end up with in the course of the game are like a service record or a cool historical log. If some shiny really motivated me, then that's fine too. People are motivated by all kinds of reward systems.

Nobody can save the hardcore Achievement Get! players who will hurt themselves trying to get everything ever, but that's no reason to disinclude a feature imo; we already have those kinds of players existing in the current framework, sitting burnt to a crisp in their ground-out Cutters wondering what to do next. If they have terminal Pokemon Effect that's not on the game.

I think a minor agreement has been reached that significant achievements could be rewarded with what I'd call a trophy and aren't intended to be awarded to all players, but things like "congrats, you managed to dock" is less a trail mark than a skid mark.

And no-one brags about their skid marks.

Speak for yourself.... :p

Yeah, I don't think the standard swathe of console-flavoured "achievements" is what I want in the least. We don't need "I can turn on the game!" as some kind of amazing accomplishment.
