Please fix this thing that passes for a Docking computer

Interesting. I have an iCutter with stock D rated thrusters and a DC fitted and use the DC 99% of the time and 99.9% of that it docks without error.

So, my conclusion is that it is not worthless on the iCutter.

Interesting that the stock D rated thrusters work OK! Perhaps it's the G5 mods on top of the A rated that causes the issues?

I don't get the need for a DC. You drop from supercruise and within moments you are touching down. Unless there is a Beluga parked in your spot.

I get the concept of a module having a character, but broke is broke. I don't need charm from my docking computer, I need it to dock. There's enough charm outside the station. They sometimes tend to thrust too far inside the station and then have to hit reverse, at which time they drop down a bit and back into something like a control tower. Things do get a bit sporty when that happens.

"Things do get a bit sporty when that happens... " LoL yeah, you could say that [noob]

Some people prefer to park their own cars, some prefer valet parking.

The OP bought an appliance that is advertised as being able to park his ship for him. He is right in being annoyed that the appliance doesn't do what it was advertised to do. Telling the OP to park it manually isn't the correct response here, IMHO. I agree that if, like the OP, I bought a dud appliance, I would have returned it for a refund or got the manufacturer to send me one that works.

Maybe the OP likes to listen to Blue Danube? :)

I don't think the updated docking computer fix is in this current version 2.3.10 Last I heard they are still working on it and is aware of the problem. I really hope they patch and fix the DC promptly.

I parked it at Ceres Tarn last week... Now you do that in a Cutter.

Oh my yes, that's fun. I had a go at it yesterday and managed it the first time albeit very slowly and the second time I let the DC have it. No problem either way but that 4G planet sure sorts out those who can land and big ship manually and those that cannot.

Indeed, I've just put a G5 mod on the Cutter so I'll try it out and see what happens.

We'll see. The problem with the DC is the edge cases and they are difficult to set up reliably and repeatably for testing.

By edge cases I mean things like the transitions between outside the dock to through the slot to inside the station to descending onto the pad. Each of these is handled slightly differently and if you enable the DC just a the transition stage you can get unpredictable result.

This also includes things like engaging the DC just outside the slot from an angle of more than 45 degrees off the centre line with a large sideways component to your approach vector.

The other thing to remember is that it is not an auto pilot. It is for docking so the best way to make it work properly is to manually line the ship up and when flying straight to the slot, or pad in the case of outposts of planetary stations, then let the DC take over.

Well Done for giving Ceres Tarn a go and Well Done for pulling it off! You are obviously a well seasoned pilot. Not a piece of cake is it ;) the trick is to not bank your ship at all... Never bank in a high G situation. Flick FAoff and on to land.

Edit. Brave to let the DC have your ship over a 4G planet... That could go very horribly wrong very fast!

As an addendum to this, I'd like to know why the heck docking permissions are three menus deep. It's a ridiculous and borderline stupid design mechanic to have to take your eyes off line-of-sight and fumble through multiple screens while in a critical flight phase.

Good point - it should be available with a hotkey, too.

Agreed. It's always felt like a bad design choice to me...

Certainly not, wasting a slot is the penalty you pay for being lazy.

You may be lazy, others are not. You'd understand that if you had read the thread and understood the reasons why a lot of commanders use the DC. But I guess you are too lazy to do that, right?

Hi guys!

Just want to say I've worked on the DC a bit, and due to some reworking of the AI thrust/orientation control, I can say it'll be all sorted for 2.4. I've tested the new code here with engineered ships, and it works much better (if not a little scary-fast at times). :)

Cool. Not that I use one though.

I hope this includes 800M/S Courier's!

(yes I committed a terrible sin fitting a DC to my Ferrari of the Elite universe)

Awesome :)

Have you smoothed out the oscillations at all?

At the moment the DC feels like an over-zealously tuned PID loop (ex-SCADA systems engineer) ;)
