Okay, what are the best head tracking options right now?

With the cable, the current pro version is £47.
There's also a DIY version which is obviously much cheaper, and the new wireless one which is £70.

Less than £100? I could have this by the end of the month. I think I'll look into it. Could be for me.

Keep in mind that all versions of the ED tracker are 3dof only, so you can rotate the view point but it wont cover lateral movement like Track IR does.
It's okay in ED as there's no point moving your head left and right (the cockpits are so big and you are so far from the canopy you wont notive any parallax anyway) but in other games (say, Falcon, DCS or Arma) small lateral motion is desirable.

So really it comes down to what will be your use for it. Just Elite? Yup, nothing beats an EDTracker.

I use ED tracker (wired).
been using it for just over a month and can really recommend it, especially for the price.
good software to configure it (which is really painless) and comes with everything you need to fasten it to your headset.

It's amazing and couldn't recommend it more.

Sorry, little confused. Can I look to my target panel with EDtracker then, or is it only moving my pilot's head up and down? Sorry for the dumb question. I'm new to the very idea of head tracking.

TrackIR.
I've had it for a few years and cannot play the game without it.

But dammit, Oculus have just lowered the price of the Rift....must resist....must.....resist.

In fact there a little translation possible (backward/frontward, on the y axis) in the cokpit. And yes, it's completely useless. IR trackers can... track up to 6 axis.

If you're forking out for a TrackIR you might as well spend the money on an Oculus from fleabay, I recently picked up a new in-box dev kit 2 for £120 and it's awesome.

Far be it from me to put pressure on people to spend money they can't afford but ...

£399 with Touch controllers?!?!?! Bloody hell. I paid nearly double that and it was worth every penny!

:x

I believe it would work the same as when you look around the cockpit in freecam with your controller of choice.

Oh okay. So basically, mouse look controlled by head movement?

Yes. EDTracker will allow you to rotate your camera around with your head just like you do with mouse look. Track IR would allow you some limited side-to-side movement as well (useful in flight sims to get a closer look at tiny gauges or, say, peek out of a helicopter's window to check what's behind), but ED doesn't make much use of that (the range of lateral motion is very limited and the cockpits too big for it to matter).

Title. I've got my X52 working again, and I'm entertaining the idea of head tracking for added imuhzion.

An EDTracker running through OpenTrack.

OpenTrack will take the output of the EDTracker and make it TrackIR compliant, so any game TrackIR compatible will just instantly work. No mapping required. Just start the game and bingo!

Mine is just velcro'd onto the top of my headphones.

ps: If I recall some TrackIR users a while back commented the EdTracker had a better response feel/speed?

Now that's a good point. I bought a Vive, but sold it again a couple of weeks later as I simply couldn't justify the cost (the resolution per eye would have needed to be 4K for me to do that :) ). However, Oculus DK2 for £120? That's definitely worth it... I'd best get looking...

Go for an Edtracker. Much cheaper then Track IR and virtually just as good. The newer version doesn't have any drift either which the old version used to suffer from.

One word in your post would/should put off any potential ED Tracker buyer over TrackIR??????

'Virtually'.

If cost is a concern then go ED Tracker, if you can afford something that just works and works and want something that other trackers seek to emulate then i'll say it one more time

TRACKIR

Nuff said!

Looking at the side panels can definitely open them (it's an option you can turn off in control settings if it becomes annoying). So I can be flying along, using all 6 control axes and I can still turn my head to the left, have the Nav panel open up, and navigate to an option such as selecting another system for a high wake jump. Another thing a lot of people maybe don't realise is that the select target ahead control selects the target you're looking at and not just what's directly in front of your ship. So you can be flying along, maintaining a nice arcing orbit around a gas giant, and at the same time, you can look out of side window, fix one of the moons in your center of vision, and press select target to select that planetary object for scanning (or maybe select a combat target for missile lock). Oh, and one more, if you're leaving the surface of a planet and your next jump is obscured, you can fly directly upwards while looking 90° to keep an eye on when you're far enough out to clear the jump target. It's all VERY cool!

Cost is a concern for me. And EDtracker looks like it does all I want, which isn't much, so I think I'm settled. If I had cash to burn I might go TrackIR, but I don't want to spend that if there's a usable alternative, which to me EDtracker appears to be.

Fair enough, if cost is in your equation !
