Galaxy Map Typing With The Vive

Hello Commndrs
This question has probably been asked and answered many times so I am sorry up front. I am just starting out in Elite with my Vive and think it is an absolutely fantastic experience. The one issue I am having is that when I am at a missions board and want to see the system that the objective is in I go to the galaxy map and always have to type in the name of the system. This means I have to take off the headset to type and sometimes I need to put the headset on and off several times in order to get the spelling of some of the longer named systems. Is there a way to jump from the mission to the galaxy map and do a search on the system needed without typing?
Thanks in advance!

This opens the gal map with the mission target system in question selected, and you can do the same for the mission via transactions as long as you have it.

for systems used a lot, bookmarks bookmarks bookmarks.

As for typing in general, no shortcuts I know of. Just practice practice practice.

Also as a bit of a hidden trick.
If you are in a wing, and your wingman selects a system in the map.
You can use the "wingman's target" button to select the same system, once you have it targeted you can open map, and it opens to that system and you can simply plot to it.

If you have Voice Attack installed, which is fantastic by the way, you could use the "dictation" mode to input text. I've not tried it myself because I can touch-type but others have apparently had some success with this method.

Just note that in VR whenever the Galaxy Map is opened, your camera is level with the plane of the galaxy/ Tilt up a bit and you will get the context menu for the target system to show up. Otherwise you get the context menu for your current system.

If you're using the EDSM webpage on the side you can easily copy system names with one mouse click. I have CTRL+V bound on a keypad just to paste into navigation.

Use bookmarks. Create bookmarks for places you plan on going before going into VR.

I also use the bookmarks' alphabetizing to organize things by putting a 3 letter code in front of the bookmark.

for example all my engineers bookmarks start with "eng"

you do have to manage them since there's a limit to how many bookmarks you can have.

I number mine.
And they even work with decimals.

So I have bookmark 1 : whatever. And 1.1, 1.2 etc etc.
Heck it even works for 1.01, 1.02 etc.

For funny places like tharg crashes and whatnots I write the lat/long coordinates in behind the bookmark.

Voice Attack - Custom script download in video description. Use "spell" and "endspell" commands to spell in GalMap or navigate side panels.

that is a nice VA addition. I have a personally customized VA profile which I based off a few others work to do basically same thing. Though for navigating panels, simply say name of panel and "close" to close out. I also have a voice command "plot route" which auto opens galaxy map and auto sets cursor into the input field for typing. At this point, would be nice to merge in the spell/endspell capability here to allow voice typing in the field. As for the messages dialog, there too, I can get to the input via hota and/or VA, but would be nice if I could simply dictate out a message for sending verbally. Sure its possible in VA.

Possible, but not practical. By the time you phonetically spell "Don't shoot I'm dropping cargo." You are already at the rebuy screen.

An on-screen keyboard is the only real long term solution. We shall see if something like that gets included in the QoL updates.

I realize that not everyone can touch-type in the blind but an on-screen keyboard doesn't seem very efficient. It would be better than nothing I suppose. As an alternative, you could use Voice Attack to send some pre-made messages such as, "Don't shoot, I'm dropping cargo.". This doesn't really help OP with their issue though.

or best, via Voice Attack, I simply say: "Messages" "Don't Shoot, Take these meta alloys...." verbally, and VA understands the voice dictation, automatically writes it to the messages input and sends.

Granted for system plotting, it will not work as most systems have odd/not real word names, but for communication via the Messages box, VA could be used to post simply what you say into your mic.

Actually I had a great idea on a similar subject just this morning.

So, if I want to reply to an in-game message for example then what I tend to do is press Enter to open the message window, attempt to type and fail and then lift my headset up a bit to type the message. In order to check what I'm typing I have to either put the headset back down again or else move my head to get the on-screen game window pointing at the comms box so I can see what's in it. My brainwave was to have a Notepad window open on my desktop and when I want to enter a message, lift up the headset, Alt Tab to Notepad, type a message normally, press Ctrl+A Ctrl+X (to cut the message to the clipboard), Alt Tab back to the game, put the headset back down again, press Enter to open comms and then simply press Ctrl+V to paste in the message I cut from Notepad. Tada! (OK, it's still a faff but it kinda works).

Also, if like me you need reading glasses to see your screen (but not for VR) then simply select a 72pt font in Notepad when you first open it.

P.S. although VoiceAttack solutions are very cool I tend to play very early in the morning and I don't think my wife would appreciate being woken up by me "talking to myself again".
