Surface Texture Weirdness

Morning all!

Is anyone else experiencing odd textures on planets...? Or is my ancient GPU telling me it wants to die in peace?

I keep seeing odd things like this;

It never used to do it before 2.3, here's a nice screenshot from around 2.0 or 2.1

Any ideas?

My graphics card is an ancient AMD HD 6870 1Gb. Drivers are as up to date as possible, but they're legacy drivers now.

I've had that also, on a AMD 6xxx series. Since the last update. low to medium setting...

Apparently, the "striped blotches" are the result of your video card running out of memory while applying textures.

It started happening when 2.3 dropped.

I have this all the time as my laptop (noob computer) doesn't have a gpu and the cpu does the work instead. it just happens with an underpowered pc
btw, 125 mb of vram can only run elite at like 15 fps so don't run it purely on an intel cpu

D'ya think glueing on some extra RAM would help? :p

1Gb of ram is pretty poor... Shame GPUs aren't Modular. Lol

I keep looking at the 4Gb 1050Ti or RX4/570 but I just don't have the money yet. :(

That's disappointing.

This happens to me with my Nvidia GTX1070 with 8GB (all graphic settings at maximum).
I wonder how much memory you need to not get this?

Yup!
I have seen this a lot.
Many planet surfaces looks like plowed fields.
Also after I upgraded to 1080 Ti.

No tech there, but there might be memory leaks - that's something I felt on my crappy config.
The game starts fine, but after half an hour or so, I notice tiny, then bigger freezes linked to difficulty in loading large graphics such as landable planet surfaces. At first I thought my laptop config was overheating and GPU (or cpu) power being reduced - but that does not seem to be it as the frame rate does not really drop - it just has more and more difficulty loading the stuff. And the streaks appear...

For the love of God; report it!

I have been thinking about doing just that, but never gotten around to do it!

Do us all a favour! [yesnod]
I was thinking, maybe someone without a ridiculously old GPU should report it?

I'm 90% sure they'll just tell me to either upgrade my GPU, or my driver's. Neither of which I can do. :p

If someone with modern hardware and up-to-date drivers does it, it'll probably get noticed more.

the problem with modern games is that you need a capable GPU to run it... downgrading the quality due to some of the players having low-end GPUs would really be a shame... sorry but it's the times we live in...

No one is asking for a downgrade...?

I was just saying I know my hardware is old and out of date. If I submit a bug report, using my hardware and drivers, they'll likely just blame my hardware and drivers, and end of bug report, unless someone else with modern hardware jumps in and +1's the issue. If someone with modern hardware and drivers reports it, they might say "oh, this shouldn't be happening". Lol

I'd never ask fora developer to gimp a game for my old hardware. My old laptop is barely hanging in being able to run Elite Dangerous, sooner or later it's not going to be able to. It's not FDs fault I'm poor. :p
My GPU is plenty capable of playing ED. (30-60fps in medium/high @ 1080p). It's just old and legacy now. So no new drivers to use. Lol

That was what I understood from "reporting it". If I'm wrong then okay, I remain silent in this thread :D

Artifacts like that can also be a result of a video card wearing a sweater. Might want to pop that case open and give it a nice air-wash with a compressor or a can of air.
Check your internal and component temperatures as well - Speed Fan is a pretty good utility for that, but you're free to use whichever you prefer.

While I haven't seen that exact effect with my brand new 1080ti, I do often see the big BLACK SQUARE blotch on planets effect. Saw the same thing with my old 980ti, so I assume this is an in-game bug with the texture generation.

The 1080ti has 11GB of VRAM... But ED never uses more than 5GB on my system.
