Why oh why do we still need to mine materials....why don't engineers have the correct materials for the services we they offer......it is most a annoying!!!!

Presumably for the same reason they havent automated the spaceships yet: its a game and this is what you do.

Well. It is totally possible to automate all things in the game. Automatic flying, honking, jumping, landing, taking off, mining, even combat, and we'll end up with a game that you install, press play, and it reports... "Yay! You won!" and the game is over.

Part of a game is that it contains things that you have to do. In Pong, you had to move the paddle to hit that darn square ball. A student here at school made a Pong, with an automated paddle controller, so he didn't have to. And both sides in the game were the same. So, you could just sit there and watch while the computer was playing...

The reason why you need to mine materials is because that's part of what this game is. It's a game where you have to collect resources, kill the pirates, scan the towers, and so on, and in the process get better at doing those things.

Besides, I love mining materials. It gives me time to just sit there and drive around and observe the landscape and the vistas. Some planets have an awesome view, with rising planets on the horizon and nebulas in the background. If we didn't have mining, the game would be more boring and less interesting to me.

You miss my point, they are offering you a service to upgrade your ship.....it would be like you going to the garage and then them saying to get this fixed you need to bring me.....x,y,z...

....to answer your question yes I would have the option for you just to pay for the upgrade.

But yes I do see your point as this adds a barrier to game, but it has to be done in a better way than mining...zzzzzzzzz!!! Yes let people have the ability to mine to get mods together want, but not everyone wants to do this....so let's have another way, Have missions available to be done to acquire what you need....the ability to buy what you want from stations.... but also let people pay for the service, that option doesn't have to be cheap....just like taking your to the garage....!!!! :)

Actually, it's more like going to that mechanic who fixes and makes after the market modifications to your car. Some of them could tell you to get the parts they need to do the mods.

Sure. It would be nice with alternative ways. However, there are ways of making a truckload of credits in the game, so it would become extremely easy to get the "god" rolls again. Then, everyone will have it within a few weeks. Now there's some kind of work to get there. Also, just paying for it, there will be a group of players who will say, "The game doesn't have any content. it's boring. there's nothing to do but to make money and pay for upgrades. there's no challenge." And so on.

But yes I do see your point as this adds a barrier to game, but it has to be done in a better way than mining...zzzzzzzzz!!!
After 2.3.10 the SRV scanner is much more powerful. It's actually quite easy to get most elements now. Or go to the barnacles, that makes it even easier.

Right. That I can see. A bit more of mission rewards. There are quite a few of them there already, but I suspect that there's still some missing.

The quickest way right now though is barnacles and Dav's supermarket.

That's just "pay to win" in my view. If we allow people to use credits to buy the best upgrades, then just do away with engineering & materials altogether. Now, calling in favours to get them to overlook 1 or 2 missing materials, or to return some materials to you if you decide to scrap an upgrade.....that I could live with, because you're paying for it with a currency other than credits.

This is to avoid that every noob starts with 100% engineered and maxed out ships just to state 5 minutes later "game is boring, nothing to do in here". [big grin]

As someone who works in the industry and has encountered forum dwellers first-hand myself, I commend Dom and FDev in general on their willingness to interact with the community. He has demonstrated remarkable restraint, given some of the sodium being flung around wildly!

On that point and having caught up here now, I'm heading back to the warmth, cosiness and tranquillity of the Formadine Rift thread. :p

Restraint aside, I think it's genuinely great that the devs pop in periodically to answer questions and put forth their views. It's really encouraging to see. I have plenty of gripes but overal the feel is still very much positive.

Me too. I remember taking a peep at the forums discussing a product I was involved in developing....I ran away and never returned :)

Sorry if I come across as 'Elitist' (pun intended), but you're not old skool unless you played on either the BBC B or Acorn Electron. ;)

Was just about to post the same thing, playing it on my BBC B (With Kenneth Kendal Voice Chip), I still remember the excitement of seeing something completely different and the moment, after pressing Load Commander and seeing what the game was about. It was a major kick in the teeth for the Chuckie Egg, Castle Quest and Planetoid type games that were the rage

Can still play some of these online in an emulated window

Why was the main menu background bug not fixed? I still see only the old NON Horizon background in the main menu on the first start of the game. Going back from inside the game into the main menu, show the Horizon Screen.

Yeah. I am trying to quickly grind my Imperial rank up so I can nab a Clipper and continue hoarding money until I can get a Cutter.

Which is 200+ million.

I'd really rather not have to grind for weeks to get to that point.

fully equipped its like 6x the price you say

But dont waste your time m8 many of us did
The cutter and the corvette are big ships unfortunatly there is no water in space.
So dont waste your time until they finnally dig it and patch those ships into huge fighting machine's
Got them both fully equipped cost arround 2.5 billion stored them somewhere and i dont use them
