Alexa Galnet Skill

Probably old news, but I noticed a new skill for my Amazon echo last night.

Three new skills are now available for Amazon Echo that will help you find your way around the Galaxy and more about the game.

First off you can enable Galnet News to be read to you by your echo Simply enable the skill and add it to your flash briefing. Then as your echo to “Give me flash briefing” and the latest in galnet news will be read to you, as if you were listening to a news broadcast.

Secondly, you can get more information on subjects in the unofficial elite wiki by enabling the “unofficial elite dangerous Wiki” skill. Simply enable it and ask it an Elite related question for example, “Alexa start elite dangerous wiki” and then “Alex, what is an asp explorer?” or “Alexa, ask elite dangerous wiki who is professor palin”

It’s also possible to have Alexa control parts of your Ship. Everything you need is here https://www.hackster.io/mathwuy/elite-dangerous-ship-assistant-04e2cd

There's now also an elite dangerous wiki skill. It reads out entries from the unofficial wiki so you go 'Alexa ask elite dangerous about professor palin'

There is also a skill to get Alexa to control your ship, though not sure how it works

edit. put all the entries into the top post.

Oh hey, the Galnet News Flash Briefing Skill is something I put together.

Would love to hear some feedback from those of you that have tried it.

It currently plays the last 3 Galnet news articles and posts a link to the source in the Alexa app. It's been a great way for me to keep up with what's going on in the Elite: Dangerous universe and I hope that you guys find it as useful as I do. [up]

Oh cool!

We have several of these contraptions around the house. I will definitely add this skill to the one out here where my gaming rig resides.

Thanks for the heads up! :)

Repped!

Tried it last night....

Lpve it.. :D

First impressions...

It would be nice to be able to FILTER out what type of GalNet content Alexa reads out. I am getting all the automated articles I usually just skim past. (Faction activity etc.)

I would prefer to focus on the primary articles published by Frontier or players. Is that possible?

Oh boy, I think I might just get one of these :D

Thanks for making this thread! I put together the Elite: Dangerous Wiki Skill and the Ship Assistant skill. I would appreciate any feedback you guys have. I have forum threads for both of these skills too. Thanks!

I see a small echo and a large one. Difference only speakers I guess?
Worth the extra £100 ?

The "Echo Dot" is the best value IF you already have a nice BlueTooth speaker it can connect to. It also has an audio line out for running direct to a speaker system or stereo system. The Speaker version of the Echo has neither of these options.

I own both.

And the speaker quality on the big echo?

Ladies and Gents. Do understand the technology you are placing in your homes. Purchasing is turned on by default.

Honestly, after the Snowden revelations, why anyone would want a live mic in their home 24/7 is beyond me.

Its not bad. About average I would say. I use an Echo Dot hard wired to a pair of quality powered stereo speakers for listening to music. THAT sounds excellent! :)

We primarily use the original Echo for turning on lights and stuff like that, and voice based podcasts on occasion.

Cheers, I'll get the smaller one.

Thanks for the feedback, that's the first conundrum I hit during development and I know exactly what you mean. Let me go over a little of the logic behind the choice to play all articles:

Galnet News (the articles) are usually published on a schedule of 3 a day (sometimes more, sometimes less). If we look at yesterdays news items they are a Powerplay update notification and a weekly health report. Whilst you and I might be less interested in those, there will be some players who are interested in them. Additionally, if I filter them out then there is a risk that Amazon flag the feed as being stale and not meeting the expectations/requirements behind a daily news feed.

So, why not add in a personal customisation option? Unfortunately that's not currently possible with Flash Briefings. That leaves us with 3 options:

1) Leave it as-is and accept that sometimes we'll end up skipping some non interesting briefings
2) Develop a new Flash Briefing that is filtered to 'Story' news items only (it would need to be a separate Flash Briefing with a new name)
3) Develop a stand-alone skill that can be filtered on demand but would need invoking specifically each time you want the news (e.g. Alexa, open Elite Dangerous News)

I'd welcome your view on which one fits your desired use case the best (and anyone else's take on this as well)
