NPC's should be payed a flat wage.

I just wish they would do something with all that money. Mine has enough for an A Rated FDL, wish she would buy one and escort me.

Because that is the cost of being able to retain someone else's services exclusively.

That's funny, in my RL job, my employer seems to have gained my exclusive services just by paying me a fixed rate, only for the hours I actually work. Same with my co-workers. Clearly we should be demanding a percentage of the company's gross profits no matter whether we are actually performing our jobs there or not.

Now that would almost be worth the expense.

the % method works for ED because you may not log on for a month, you'd still have to pay them that wage and when you log back on you could find you are skint, this way you only have to pay when you make money. A fixed wage is a terrible idea.

But that's due to the job you do. Try getting a salesman on a fixed rate. It doesn't happen - it's percentage of profits.

I would argue that a fixed, hourly rate of pay is the situation experienced by 99% of all employees in the entire world. Usually the only ones who get a % of company profits are partners or share holders. And even in your example, that percentage is of sales the SALESMAN makes while actually doing his job, not a percentage of what his entire company makes while the salesman is at home watching TV.

I think when the npc pilots are inactive they should be paid a fixed rate or a smaller percentage , maybe their rank X 0.25% for lounging. (with a percentage min at 1%) It could be that simple.

When NPCs were announced by Sandro, he said they got paid 1/2 rate while inactive. It has never actually been true, even in betas

I don't ing care what I or you or anyone would do in real life, they're an npc in a videogame. Its goddamn that FDEV put in a system that steals money from players if they enjoy one specific game element. Like if I wanted to min-max I would just hire then fire my npc to save money. But if I want to play passively and keep my friend alive? Tyat will be a massive cut of your game income please.

I hire one at expert rank, when I need a fighter pilot (only when doing combat or being in open), I fire them before I cash in bounties, combat bonds or missions and hire a new one after that (unless their cut would be less than the fee for hiring).

Here is what to do if they complain:
Excerpt from the "Code of Greedy Traders":

Rule 72 (Mercenary Fighter Pilots)
[...] If they complain or want to tell others force (refer to Rule 9 (necessary equipment) under section 4 - laser rifles and other useful "tools") them inside an airlock. Shoot their remlok control (refer to Rule 9 (necessary equipment) under section 1 - remlok) with a stun shot, lock the airlock and disable the automatic protocol function. Afterwards cycle the airlock.
If that is too harsh for you force them to take Hexedit to clear their memory - should only do that for those you like or that were polite while complaining, that stuff isn't cheap after all.

Jesus christ people in this thread are idiots. For all of you so ready to jump to FDs defence on this- so stations should charge 2% of income per week for each ship they're housing, right? And there should be a docking fee every time you land, right? And the Pilots Federation should bill you monthly for your flight permit, and you should regulary be charged 10% of your ship's rebuy cost by the insurance company covering you, yes?"

YOU DON'T GET INSURANCE FOR FREE IN REAL LIFE. PARKING ISN'T FREE IN REAL LIFE. If FD's gonna heap absurd "realism" punishments on players that enjoy having a long term npc companion, I demand they aggressively tax all playstyles out of existance.

Sadly this seems like the most efficient, economical and logical way to handle NPC pilots and is pretty good evidence that the current pay-them-for-sitting-on-their-butts system is completely broken when players feel forced to do this to avoid getting ripped off. I will most certainly be doing it from now on until the NPC pay system is fixed.

I dont want to abuse the system, I want to play normally, I want to build up a long term relationship with an npc pilot and carefully train them over months. But the system is so horribly broken I feel that FD has left me no real choice, its either that or get robbed blind.

The only thing I really REALLY dislike is paying my NPC pilot while he or she is not in my ship. Or make it a 2% while not employed or something. Makes me not wanna use them.

But the NPC is unable to work for anyone else while signed up with you, hence you have to pay them.

If they're working for me, they're doing a dangerous job and get paid for that. If they're screwing around in a station it makes a lot of sense that they don't get paid their full wage!!

And besides that, it is just not FUN to hire NPC pilots that are more like a -12(?)% debuff, even when you're not using them. FD please reconsider!

Now I think of it... It might be a bug. Let's file some bug reports :)

Agreed TS. Currently I do not use fighter pilots (other than the expert which I hire and fire whenever needed) for this reason. I would love to train up a crewman but it's just too expensive and annoying to keep them around.

lol.. think urself lucky, ive 3 x Elite npc crew members each slicing 16% of what i make. thats 48% - almost half of everything ^_^ No sweat when youve made the bigtime from being a kickstarter and bought almost everything with 3+billion in cash.

Seems ok for the NPC crew to take a percentage, but it does seem tad high. Not all workers get a flat rate or hourly rate. Some of us get a regular salary, bonus and a small percentage of the company's profits. No, I'm not in sales.

Perhaps a standard salary, depending on NPC rank would be right, plus a small percentage based on performance while active. That should be fair.

Ouch, you have my sympathy. The really horrible part is they still get 48% of anything you make even if all three of them are chilling in the crew lounge watching reruns of Game of Thrones while you do all the work. Its a pretty good deal to be honest, where can I get a job like that?

Not a perfect solution from my point of view but about 1000 times better than the current situation and definitely a compromise I could live with.

I'd think the salary should be quite low when they're goofing off and inactive. Something to just keep them on the books. The performance bonus can be applied when active and can vary. But that might be a lot to program in. Still, they do seem to suck down a tad more than they earn.

Most reluctantly, I released all my NPC crew yesterday, since I play in solo, and I personally do not find the Keelback to my taste. A *Python* with fighters might be worth it, but not the Keelback.
