UY Scuti - Where The Hell?

Hello, Fellow travellers!

UY Scuti, is one of those stars that might be bigger than that rascal VY Canis Majoris.
At least it's a competitor. [yesnod]

But where The Hell is it?

Has it gotten another name in the Elite Dangerous Galaxy?
Anyone knows?

To the FDEV's...
It would be really nice if you could place a couple of landable planets inside the VY Canis Majoris Star System.
And also inside the systems of the other of the largest stars.
Much easier to get the feel of size then.
Betelgeuse, is a wonderful example of this, where you can land 2500 ls from the star and it still looks and feels huge. [yesnod]

Thank you very much!

Have an excellent evening and weekend!

Kind regards!

Your Favourite Infidel

Not in the game. Some other famous stars are also missing.

Some hypergiants, like RW Cephei, Antares and many others are far smaller in the game than their estimated real sizes.

Biggest (real) stars you can find in the game are VY Canis Majoris, KY Cygni and Mu Cephei.

If you're going to Mu Cephei, take a ship capable of jumping at least 35ly, or you'll be unable to perform the final jump into it.

Isn't that in the constellation?

it's 9.5 kylies from Sol apparently.

I have searched the star map rather, I think, thoroughly.

And also tried other names it has been given, according to Wikipedia.

No luck.
Thus I decided to try to get to the bottom of it, here in the Forums.

Aha!

Well, that sucks a little.
A little and a half. [yesnod]

Thanks a lot for helping me out. :)

This is one of those threads where I'd expect Mr. Brookes to jump in with information.
Alas, no longer part of the ED team. :(

What about the Black Hole CYG X-1?

Have been to TRA X-1.
And found CYGNI X-3.

But not Cyg X-1

CYGNI X-3, is extremely far out.
On the very edge.
Have anyone been there?
Is it possible to go there?

Well; someone has taken over his job with Elite - so with luck, that someone will step in and enlighten us. [yesnod]

Don't remember that new persons name.

CYGNI X-3 looks pretty lonely, don't think we can reach it using current FSD technology. Closest system I could find was Straluia OI-B d13-0, 416Ly from Cygni X-3.

VY Canis Majoris is a jawdropper every time I go there.

Just to clarify regarding Cygnus X-1. It IS in game and is searchable on the galaxy map as V1357 Cyngi or as Cygni X-1. The former is what the system is called on the galaxy map itself, but both terms are searchable and will come to the same system.

It is about 1500LY further away than it should be, but it is in the right direction, and that's pretty close. I have it bookmarked ready for whenever FD decide to give black holes an overhaul.

As for black holes, unfortunately our home galaxy is not a great spot for impressive black holes.

Aside from Sag A and the twin great annihilator black holes, all other black holes are miniscule. Unless of course the stellar forge has produced some freak black hole somewhere, but it's unlikely.

Even Sag A is a dwarf among other supermassive black holes out there in other galaxies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_massive_black_holes (Sag A is at the bottom of the list for comparison purposes)

It looks lonely indeed!
So far out I didn't know there was anything Milky Way left. :D

Thanks for the reply.

And so I found it.

Thanks a lot!
Very helpful info indeed! [yesnod]

Don't forget to check out the sunrise at Betelgeuse on your way out...

I did not forget. ;)

There is something Magical about that Shoulder of Orion!
I have been there before as well.

A while ago I was looking at the Belt of Orion, and so also Betelgeuse.
And this thought popped into my mind, almost a recognition; "I have been there!"
It felt just great and I had to laugh a little. [yesnod]

Like explained in that old - but really great - movie; The Matrix.
Where Morpheus explains to Mister Anderson how the brain sort of pictures our body, without actually seeing it.

How an illusion can feel real - the brain can perceive something as actual, when it's not.

So very enjoyable! :)

UY Scuti isn't in the game because size measurements for UV Scuti were not published until after the ED map was created. Back then, VY Can Maj was "the largest known star in the galaxy", therefore VY Can Maj is the largest star in the ED galaxy.

Since then, more accurate measurements have shrunk the size estimate of VY Can Maj and discovered a couple of other stars that are bigger.

I also enjoy, although for different reasons, the right foot of Orion, Rigel. Nowhere to land, not as impressive as Betelgeuse for sure, but the blinding light of those huge blue stars (Rigel B is even brighter) is something that I can't stop basking :D. Both Betelgeuse and Rigel are 2 of my favorite POIs, on the awesome, POI filled route to Barnards Loop. It's s shame a huge sector near the loop is still locked, it's probably the coolest area in the galaxy.

The real(ish) galaxy is this game's biggest asset. I went to many places, several quite far away, because they were "real", to experience what it would be like to actually "be" there. Well, up to the point suspension of disbelief allows for, but it's the closest experience there is currently to actually "being there". Being the "real" galaxy means that we will never see in-game some astronomical freaks of nature like this:

5MCu8H9.jpg

But at the same time makes travelling through the galaxy so much more enjoyable, knowing that many of the things we see are actually real.

Over a year ago, I spent hours creating lists of real places that I would love to check out in the game. Pity that so many hypergiants are either missing, or much smaller than their actual sizes.
