Ships Do you need a rank

Hi Everyone,

I am at the stage where I do not need to much more to get a Clipper but I have no Rank atm. And I need to figure out how to.

So I am hoping for the Python I do not need a rank to buy it?
If I can keep grinding passenger missions I shuld be able to buy one outright and transfer my modules to it from the Asp X, or should I trade/buy?

Trade or buy outright is your decision to make. I can remember selling everything I owned to buy one ship and have barely enough left for one rebuy.

So I'm not qualified to tell you how to play the game, although there will be others along who are perfectly happy to do so. Enjoy. ;)

No, the Python does not require rank to acquire. Just lots of credits. And even more to outfit it properly. The rank grinds are hugely boring, and time consuming, which is exactly what FD wants. But you can kill two birds with one stone here so to speak:

I wanted a FAS ship badly, but I needed rank. Well guess what? I also needed a bunch of credits. So, I found a few close together systems that had a lot of fed factions, and did lots and lots of missions to get both credits and rank.

Still tedious, but it served it's purpose. Then I went and did the same thing with the Imperials, but by the time I had the rank and money for the Clipper I already had my Python and had no use for the Clipper. Flew one around for a bit because it is a pretty ship, but then sold it.

Just a few suggestions. :)

Have a look at this link http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Ships , the Empire ships iEagle, iCourier, iClipper and iCutter require various ranks and the Federation FDS, FAS, FGS and Corvette do as well but everything else is rank free,

For a decent Python you'll want around 120 mil and not that many modules will be compatible (the Asp uses a class 5 thruster the Python a class 6) the FSD is the same though and both can fit up to class 6 shields, I suggest using whatever parts are compatible and storing the Asp as the stock trade in will be 6.5 mil -10%.

Here's my heavily engineered Python, I'd also suggest buying it at Li Yong-Rui aligned stations for the 15% discount on ships and equipment https://eddb.io/station

Thanks! I think i will try to grind for the Python. I was interested in the FDL at one point the the Python has some Stats I like, and one is it's small pads size and good Ly range:)

My thoughts for buying a new ship..
As every ship I have has a different use , I tend to save 3x the amount I need before I buy it..
that gives me a chance to fully A-rate it and have a few rebuys left over... and dont forget rebuys on your other ships :)

Thanks Everyone,

What I am going to do is save till I can buy it outright.
Then transfer my A and B rated Modules out of my Asp X and install on to the Python if the Stock ones have worse stats, And just store the Asp. I still have my Cobra btw and its just stock but at least I have a Fallback ship.

In times past.....it was way harder to get the money for the Python than the Rank for the Clipper.....

If you can afford a Python, than there is no need for a Clipper besides the style or RP.
Just make sure, you're not one of those who creates in the next hour a whining thread of loosing the ship due to no rebuy

Python doesn't need a rank....

Just a note of caution: The Python is pretty much a one-off ship with regard to modules. IIRC, the FSD will be the only module you can transplant to your new Python. Everything else is larger (read more expensive) and more powerful. That extra power will come in handy later though, trust me. :)

When I bought my Python, I think I sold everything I had to get her. I transferred my FSD from my AspE, and bought A-rated PP and thrusters/engines. Probably D-rated everything else as jump range and speed were necessary then to outrun the NPCs that were coming after me as I was still taking every mission I could get, including Elite rated ones that created some nasty pirates chasing me.

As I made more credits, I upgraded my Python with better stuff. I won't lie, in that it took a bit of work to finally get her where I wanted her. But I have kept her ever since. Can't say that for any of the other ships I have owned, except her Big Brother. :)

You might consider keeping the AspX as is until you can engineer the Python FSD, use the Asp X as the go to system and transfer the Python in as needed, or swap out the Asp X for a Diamondback X to do the same thing.
