NPC's should be payed a flat wage.

Neither do I, but while far more highly skilled than a burger flipper, a combat pilot is still only an employee who can be hired or fired at a whim, not a shareholder or part owner of the business. They really shouldn't be entitled to a % share of whatever profits the business makes, especially when they aren't piloting. Just a steady wage like most employees get.

Wow. You've really taken capitalism to heart, haven't you? I hope you don't run a business in real life.

Don't see why people get upset about this, its only a few %. And its not like making money is hard. By the time you are thinking about crew, getting money shouldn't be an issue.

Just don't hire them at expert. Train them up from Harmless for reduced %.

A few % you say?

Mine sfl crew got 38 milions from me (not joking)

Becuase she has stolen every transactions in every mission I did while she wasn't involved...

At least if she had a nice a**...

Wow, the OP sure is stingy. Only pay a flat fee in return for risking hours life? And don't pay a retainer? You wouldn't get a single pilot in real life to fly for such cheap wages.

Please people, let's keep some perspective.

First, this is a game and non-existent persons we're talking about here. Second, if we refuse to keep this fact in mind, I doubt we'd ever be able to swap professions from a miner to a bounty hunter in an instant (or ever be able to buy a spaceship), so a bounty hunter/pirate would keep an additional pilot while an explorer would never get one. As it is IN A GAME, you can go from one to another in under a minute. Also in reality, when you do need an extra hand for a limited time, it is a short term contract with a contractor who is - hopefully - already an expert. You really don't want to hire a novice wannabe carpenter. In Elite, A GAME, you are encouraged to keep an extra pilot by training him. And then you let him go because the next few missions have no use for him and he is a clear draw on 'the company'.

So what we're doing is trying to find a gamey way to keep the pilot even when he is a redundance as hiring/firing is something you can find annoying. In a game.

Thankfully I dont, but if I did I would most certainly go bankrupt in record time if I paid all my employees 12% of my gross profits, even while they were sitting at home doing nothing.

Very well said.

Come on guys, a couple of people have ALREADY explained why FDev could not make the payment system any different than it is:

Problem is, if you have NPC crew, and (like me) you stop playing the game for months on end, you could come back to a vastly reduced bank account. Having them take a cut of the profits means they only make money when you're making money.
You could pay NPCs a wage, but then it would be crippling to some players and chump change to others. A % of money seems like the best solution.
i.e. It's NOTHING to do with being "realistic", but rather trying to make it fair on players. It's merely slightly bad for everyone, rather than being great for some & REALLY bad for others.

I don't think anyone objects to the % of the money. Just not of the money where the NPC is not even with you. I agree that flat wage is not good, especially not real-time flat wage. Play-time flat wage would be the least complicated system.

Current system makes the NPC a slave when the player goes on the rampage destroying everything. It brings no money so no pay for the NPC, even though he is risking his digital behind.

I fired all my NPC's. It hurt, not having them do things for me in role-play background. :)

But, I've saved nearly a million credits in a few days doing my own dishes and laundry.

NPC crew member's should not be payed at all, period. Does that money go back into the BGS in any way? No. It goes nowhere for no purpose, and may as well stay in your wallet.

I have no crew, a mate of mine's crew decided that when he got back from the ancient ruins, that they were collectively entitled to 20,000,000 credits. "We been waiting... you're still paying us right?"

He had no idea they were even employed. I hate the crews. I might hire one right now just so I can role play letting them go.

i would just like the ability to launch up to two fighters have npc crew members flying them. but alas you can only do that in multy crew

What are you talking about? I was certain that the percentages were the same regardless of if they were hired at a certain ranking or were trained up?

An Elite rated pilot you hired from Harmless will take a 10% cut (2% +8% from ranking up).
An Elite rated pilot you hired from Expert takes a 15% cut (12% +3% from ranking up).

Is that 5% savings worth it from leveling a NPC from harmless? Only you can decide. Everyone is different. Some prefer to level from harmless. Some don't care. Some are rich and 15% is nothing. Others think NPC are waste of money and will hire and fire as needed. Play your way.
